    Towards Developing an Online Social Media-based Mobile Learning System

    The advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the Internet revolution gave rise to the several learning technologies on the web and mobile platform. During the last decade, the social media network became available for users to socialise and collaborate among peer group. Hence, The integration of e-learning and social media using mobile device as access point is to allow for learning and collaboration anytime, anywhere. This study seeks to provide learning on the social network platform for users to view the application on a mobile device and also foster collaboration among scholars. The system was developed using an open source Content Management System (CMS) Wordpress and Buddypress running on a WAMP or XAMPP server. MySQL was used as database. The usability of the System on the different mobile devices used was evaluated by identifying the usability attributes; designing a questionnaire based on those attributes and then analyzing the results with Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results showed that the learning system had a good usability score on mobile device

    EVResponse - Moving Beyond Traditional Emergency Response Notification

    Federal, state and local governmental agencies have been investing considerably in emergency response management systems to assist crisis management officers in the assessment, mitigation and response to emergency situations. In crisis management contexts, the timeliness of a response may be determined with reference to a fixed instant in the form of an absolute action threshold. This establishes the last possible point in time where any sort of solution is available. Once an action threshold is passed, a crisis is no longer containable; whatever adverse consequences a problem portends are thereafter inescapable. In this paper, we describe a special GIS-based response management system, EVResponse that combines GIS capabilities with web based voice translation technologies such as VoiceXML to effectively coordinate the pre, current and post crisis management activities. VoiceXML provides open standards based methodology to facilitate the integration and communication of emergency response systems with existing disaster planning systems. The EVResponse application uses web services to provide real-time reporting capabilities to both decision makers and first response units

    Modeling Internet as a User-Adapted Speech Service

However, maximizing accessibility is not always the main objective in the design of web applications, specially if it is concerned with facilitating access for disabled people. This way, natural spoken conversation and multimodal conversational agents have been proposed as a solution to facilitate a more natural interaction with these kind of devices. In this paper, we describe a proposal to provide spoken access to Internet information that is valid not only to generate basic applications (e.g., web search engines), but also to develop dialog-based speech interfaces that facilitate a user-adapted access that enhances web services.     Speech technologies are coming of age. They are applied in an increasing number of mobile, call-center, home and office settings. They challenge the established Graphical User Interface metaphor and promise to fundamentally alter the way humans conceptualize and interact with computers. This change leads to new requirements for the development of information systems. It also provides new research issues and opportunities for the academic community. In this article, the main elements of speech technologies will be presented and their applications will be discussed. The article does not focus on technical aspects of speech technologies but is concerned with the business aspects of applying such technologies.     Staging Transformations for Multimodal Web Interaction Management

    Multimodal interfaces are becoming increasingly ubiquitous with the advent of mobile devices, accessibility considerations, and novel software technologies that combine diverse interaction media. In addition to improving access and delivery capabilities, such interfaces enable flexible and personalized dialogs with websites, much like a conversation between humans. In this paper, we present a software framework for multimodal web interaction management that supports mixed-initiative dialogs between users and websites. A mixed-initiative dialog is one where the user and the website take turns changing the flow of interaction. The framework supports the functional specification and realization of such dialogs using staging transformations -- a theory for representing and reasoning about dialogs based on partial input. It supports multiple interaction interfaces, and offers sessioning, caching, and co-ordination functions through the use of an interaction manager.     Integration of a voice recognition system in a social robot

    Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) 1 is one of the main fields in the study and research of robotics. Within this field, dialog systems and interaction by voice play a very important role. When speaking about human- robot natural dialog we assume that the robot has the capability to accurately recognize the utterance what the human wants to transmit verbally and even its semantic meaning, but this is not always achieved. In this paper we describe the steps and requirements that we went through in order to endow the personal social robot Maggie, developed in the University Carlos III of Madrid, with the capability of understanding the natural language spoken by any human. We have analyzed the different possibilities offered by current software/hardware alternatives by testing them in real environments. We have obtained accurate data related to the speech recognition capabilities in different environments, using the most modern audio acquisition systems and analyzing not so typical parameters as user age, sex, intonation, volume and language. Finally we propose a new model to classify recognition results as accepted and rejected, based in a second ASR opinion. This new approach takes into account the pre-calculated success rate in noise intervals for each recognition framework decreasing false positives and false negatives rate.The funds have provided by the Spanish Government through the project called `Peer to Peer Robot-Human Interaction'' (R2H), of MEC (Ministry of Science and Education), and the project “A new approach to social robotics'' (AROS), of MICINN (Ministry of Science and Innovation).
