Feature discovery and visualization of robot mission data using convolutional autoencoders and Bayesian nonparametric topic models
The gap between our ability to collect interesting data and our ability to
analyze these data is growing at an unprecedented rate. Recent algorithmic
attempts to fill this gap have employed unsupervised tools to discover
structure in data. Some of the most successful approaches have used
probabilistic models to uncover latent thematic structure in discrete data.
Despite the success of these models on textual data, they have not generalized
as well to image data, in part because of the spatial and temporal structure
that may exist in an image stream.
We introduce a novel unsupervised machine learning framework that
incorporates the ability of convolutional autoencoders to discover features
from images that directly encode spatial information, within a Bayesian
nonparametric topic model that discovers meaningful latent patterns within
discrete data. By using this hybrid framework, we overcome the fundamental
dependency of traditional topic models on rigidly hand-coded data
representations, while simultaneously encoding spatial dependency in our topics
without adding model complexity. We apply this model to the motivating
application of high-level scene understanding and mission summarization for
exploratory marine robots. Our experiments on a seafloor dataset collected by a
marine robot show that the proposed hybrid framework outperforms current
state-of-the-art approaches on the task of unsupervised seafloor terrain

Real-Time Classification of Twitter Trends
Social media users give rise to social trends as they share about common
interests, which can be triggered by different reasons. In this work, we
explore the types of triggers that spark trends on Twitter, introducing a
typology with following four types: 'news', 'ongoing events', 'memes', and
'commemoratives'. While previous research has analyzed trending topics in a
long term, we look at the earliest tweets that produce a trend, with the aim of
categorizing trends early on. This would allow to provide a filtered subset of
trends to end users. We analyze and experiment with a set of straightforward
language-independent features based on the social spread of trends to
categorize them into the introduced typology. Our method provides an efficient
way to accurately categorize trending topics without need of external data,
enabling news organizations to discover breaking news in real-time, or to
quickly identify viral memes that might enrich marketing decisions, among
others. The analysis of social features also reveals patterns associated with
each type of trend, such as tweets about ongoing events being shorter as many
were likely sent from mobile devices, or memes having more retweets originating

Reading the Source Code of Social Ties
Though online social network research has exploded during the past years, not
much thought has been given to the exploration of the nature of social links.
Online interactions have been interpreted as indicative of one social process
or another (e.g., status exchange or trust), often with little systematic
justification regarding the relation between observed data and theoretical
concept. Our research aims to breach this gap in computational social science
by proposing an unsupervised, parameter-free method to discover, with high
accuracy, the fundamental domains of interaction occurring in social networks.
By applying this method on two online datasets different by scope and type of
interaction (aNobii and Flickr) we observe the spontaneous emergence of three
domains of interaction representing the exchange of status, knowledge and
social support. By finding significant relations between the domains of
interaction and classic social network analysis issues (e.g., tie strength,
dyadic interaction over time) we show how the network of interactions induced
by the extracted domains can be used as a starting point for more nuanced
analysis of online social data that may one day incorporate the normative
grammar of social interaction. Our methods finds applications in online social

Identifying Unclear Questions in Community Question Answering Websites
Thousands of complex natural language questions are submitted to community
question answering websites on a daily basis, rendering them as one of the most
important information sources these days. However, oftentimes submitted
questions are unclear and cannot be answered without further clarification
questions by expert community members. This study is the first to investigate
the complex task of classifying a question as clear or unclear, i.e., if it
requires further clarification. We construct a novel dataset and propose a
classification approach that is based on the notion of similar questions. This
approach is compared to state-of-the-art text classification baselines. Our
main finding is that the similar questions approach is a viable alternative
that can be used as a stepping stone towards the development of supportive user

Online Popularity and Topical Interests through the Lens of Instagram
Online socio-technical systems can be studied as proxy of the real world to
investigate human behavior and social interactions at scale. Here we focus on
Instagram, a media-sharing online platform whose popularity has been rising up
to gathering hundred millions users. Instagram exhibits a mixture of features
including social structure, social tagging and media sharing. The network of
social interactions among users models various dynamics including
follower/followee relations and users' communication by means of
posts/comments. Users can upload and tag media such as photos and pictures, and
they can "like" and comment each piece of information on the platform. In this
work we investigate three major aspects on our Instagram dataset: (i) the
structural characteristics of its network of heterogeneous interactions, to
unveil the emergence of self organization and topically-induced community
structure; (ii) the dynamics of content production and consumption, to
understand how global trends and popular users emerge; (iii) the behavior of
users labeling media with tags, to determine how they devote their attention
and to explore the variety of their topical interests. Our analysis provides
clues to understand human behavior dynamics on socio-technical systems,
specifically users and content popularity, the mechanisms of users'
interactions in online environments and how collective trends emerge from

Ontology For Europe's Space Situational Awareness Program
This paper presents an ontology architecture concept for the European Space Agency‘s (ESA) Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Program. It incorporates the author‘s domain ontology, The Space Situational Awareness Ontology and related ontology work. I summarize computational ontology, discuss the segments of ESA SSA, and introduce an option for a modular ontology framework reflecting the divisionsof the SSA program. Among other things, ontologies are used for data sharing and integration. By applying ontology to ESA data, the ESA may better achieve its integration and innovation goals, while simultaneously improving the state of peaceful SSA
