Visualizing Digital Collections at Archive-It
Archive-It, a subscription service from the Internet Archive, allows users to create,maintain, and view digital collections of web resources. The current interface of Archive-It is largely text-based, supporting drill-down navigation using lists of URIs.While this interface provides good searching capabilities, it is not efficient for browsing. In the absence of keywords, a user has to spend large amount of time trying to locate a web page of interest. In order to provide a better visual experience to the user, we have studied the underlying characteristics of Archive-It collections and implemented six different visualizations (treemap, time cloud, bubble chart, image plot, timeline and wordle), each highlighting one or more of the underlying characteristics of the collection. Archive-It supports grouping of web pages into categories, however, it does not enforce its usage. As a result there are many collections with missing or improper grouping. For such collections, we present a method of grouping web pages based on a set of pre-defined rules
Looking at a digital research data archive - Visual interfaces to EASY
In this paper we explore visually the structure of the collection of a
digital research data archive in terms of metadata for deposited datasets. We
look into the distribution of datasets over different scientific fields; the
role of main depositors (persons and institutions) in different fields, and
main access choices for the deposited datasets. We argue that visual analytics
of metadata of collections can be used in multiple ways: to inform the archive
about structure and growth of its collection; to foster collections strategies;
and to check metadata consistency. We combine visual analytics and visual
enhanced browsing introducing a set of web-based, interactive visual interfaces
to the archive's collection. We discuss how text based search combined with
visual enhanced browsing enhances data access, navigation, and reuse.Comment: Submitted to the TPDL 201
Guidelines for the presentation and visualisation of lifelog content
Lifelogs offer rich voluminous sources of personal and
social data for which visualisation is ideally suited to providing access, overview, and navigation. We explore through examples of our visualisation work within the domain of lifelogging the major axes on which lifelogs operate, and therefore, on which their visualisations should be contingent. We also explore the concept of âeventsâ as a way to significantly reduce the complexity of the lifelog for presentation and make it more human-oriented. Finally we present some guidelines and goals which should be considered when designing presentation modes for lifelog conten
The Application of the Montage Image Mosaic Engine To The Visualization Of Astronomical Images
The Montage Image Mosaic Engine was designed as a scalable toolkit, written
in C for performance and portability across *nix platforms, that assembles FITS
images into mosaics. The code is freely available and has been widely used in
the astronomy and IT communities for research, product generation and for
developing next-generation cyber-infrastructure. Recently, it has begun to
finding applicability in the field of visualization. This has come about
because the toolkit design allows easy integration into scalable systems that
process data for subsequent visualization in a browser or client. And it
includes a visualization tool suitable for automation and for integration into
Python: mViewer creates, with a single command, complex multi-color images
overlaid with coordinate displays, labels, and observation footprints, and
includes an adaptive image histogram equalization method that preserves the
structure of a stretched image over its dynamic range. The Montage toolkit
contains functionality originally developed to support the creation and
management of mosaics but which also offers value to visualization: a
background rectification algorithm that reveals the faint structure in an
image; and tools for creating cutout and down-sampled versions of large images.
Version 5 of Montage offers support for visualizing data written in HEALPix
sky-tessellation scheme, and functionality for processing and organizing images
to comply with the TOAST sky-tessellation scheme required for consumption by
the World Wide Telescope (WWT). Four online tutorials enable readers to
