Dynamic Decomposition of Spatiotemporal Neural Signals
Neural signals are characterized by rich temporal and spatiotemporal dynamics
that reflect the organization of cortical networks. Theoretical research has
shown how neural networks can operate at different dynamic ranges that
correspond to specific types of information processing. Here we present a data
analysis framework that uses a linearized model of these dynamic states in
order to decompose the measured neural signal into a series of components that
capture both rhythmic and non-rhythmic neural activity. The method is based on
stochastic differential equations and Gaussian process regression. Through
computer simulations and analysis of magnetoencephalographic data, we
demonstrate the efficacy of the method in identifying meaningful modulations of
oscillatory signals corrupted by structured temporal and spatiotemporal noise.
These results suggest that the method is particularly suitable for the analysis
and interpretation of complex temporal and spatiotemporal neural signals
Fault detection in operating helicopter drive train components based on support vector data description
The objective of the paper is to develop a vibration-based automated procedure dealing with early detection of
mechanical degradation of helicopter drive train components using Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) data. An anomaly-detection method devoted to the quantification of the degree of deviation of the mechanical state of a component from its nominal condition is developed. This method is based on an Anomaly Score (AS) formed by a combination of a set of statistical features correlated with specific damages, also known as Condition Indicators (CI), thus the operational variability is implicitly included in the model through the CI correlation. The problem of fault detection is then recast as a one-class classification problem in the space spanned by a set of CI, with the aim of a global differentiation between normal and anomalous observations, respectively related to healthy and supposedly faulty components. In this paper, a procedure based on an efficient one-class classification method that does not require any assumption on the data distribution, is used. The core of such an approach is the Support Vector Data Description (SVDD), that allows an efficient data description without the need of a significant amount of statistical data. Several analyses have been carried out in order to validate the proposed procedure, using flight vibration data collected from a H135, formerly known as EC135, servicing helicopter, for which micro-pitting damage on a gear was detected by HUMS and assessed through visual inspection. The capability of the proposed approach of providing better trade-off between false alarm rates and missed detection rates with respect to individual CI and to the AS obtained assuming jointly-Gaussian-distributed CI has been also analysed
Recent Progress in Image Deblurring
This paper comprehensively reviews the recent development of image
deblurring, including non-blind/blind, spatially invariant/variant deblurring
techniques. Indeed, these techniques share the same objective of inferring a
latent sharp image from one or several corresponding blurry images, while the
blind deblurring techniques are also required to derive an accurate blur
kernel. Considering the critical role of image restoration in modern imaging
systems to provide high-quality images under complex environments such as
motion, undesirable lighting conditions, and imperfect system components, image
deblurring has attracted growing attention in recent years. From the viewpoint
of how to handle the ill-posedness which is a crucial issue in deblurring
tasks, existing methods can be grouped into five categories: Bayesian inference
framework, variational methods, sparse representation-based methods,
homography-based modeling, and region-based methods. In spite of achieving a
certain level of development, image deblurring, especially the blind case, is
limited in its success by complex application conditions which make the blur
kernel hard to obtain and be spatially variant. We provide a holistic
understanding and deep insight into image deblurring in this review. An
analysis of the empirical evidence for representative methods, practical
issues, as well as a discussion of promising future directions are also

The COST IRACON Geometry-based Stochastic Channel Model for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication in Intersections
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) wireless communications can improve traffic safety
at road intersections and enable congestion avoidance. However, detailed
knowledge about the wireless propagation channel is needed for the development
and realistic assessment of V2V communication systems. We present a novel
geometry-based stochastic MIMO channel model with support for frequencies in
the band of 5.2-6.2 GHz. The model is based on extensive high-resolution
measurements at different road intersections in the city of Berlin, Germany. We
extend existing models, by including the effects of various obstructions,
higher order interactions, and by introducing an angular gain function for the
scatterers. Scatterer locations have been identified and mapped to measured
multi-path trajectories using a measurement-based ray tracing method and a
subsequent RANSAC algorithm. The developed model is parameterized, and using
the measured propagation paths that have been mapped to scatterer locations,
model parameters are estimated. The time variant power fading of individual
multi-path components is found to be best modeled by a Gamma process with an
exponential autocorrelation. The path coherence distance is estimated to be in
the range of 0-2 m. The model is also validated against measurement data,
showing that the developed model accurately captures the behavior of the
measured channel gain, Doppler spread, and delay spread. This is also the case

Generalized Kernel-based Visual Tracking
In this work we generalize the plain MS trackers and attempt to overcome
standard mean shift trackers' two limitations.
It is well known that modeling and maintaining a representation of a target
object is an important component of a successful visual tracker.
However, little work has been done on building a robust template model for
kernel-based MS tracking. In contrast to building a template from a single
frame, we train a robust object representation model from a large amount of
data. Tracking is viewed as a binary classification problem, and a
discriminative classification rule is learned to distinguish between the object
and background. We adopt a support vector machine (SVM) for training. The
tracker is then implemented by maximizing the classification score. An
iterative optimization scheme very similar to MS is derived for this purpose.Comment: 12 page
Real-time filtering and detection of dynamics for compression of HDTV
The preprocessing of video sequences for data compressing is discussed. The end goal associated with this is a compression system for HDTV capable of transmitting perceptually lossless sequences at under one bit per pixel. Two subtopics were emphasized to prepare the video signal for more efficient coding: (1) nonlinear filtering to remove noise and shape the signal spectrum to take advantage of insensitivities of human viewers; and (2) segmentation of each frame into temporally dynamic/static regions for conditional frame replenishment. The latter technique operates best under the assumption that the sequence can be modelled as a superposition of active foreground and static background. The considerations were restricted to monochrome data, since it was expected to use the standard luminance/chrominance decomposition, which concentrates most of the bandwidth requirements in the luminance.
