    Brokering SLAs for end-to-end QoS in cloud computing

    In this paper, we present a brokering logic for providing precise end-to-end QoS levels to cloud applications distributed across a number of different business actors, such as network service providers (NSP) and cloud providers (CSP). The broker composes a number of available offerings from each provider, in a way that respects the QoS application constraints while minimizing costs incurred by cloud consumers.     A QoS registry for adaptive real-time service-oriented applications

    Real-time service-oriented applications are charac- terized by Quality of Service (QoS) requirements that cannot be properly managed by using classical real-time systems methodologies. In dynamic environments the QoS management can effectively leverage adaptive techniques, that provide flexibility and do not require a complex offline analysis. In turn, such techniques make a massive use of on-line collected data regarding the application performance and the resource requirements. Moreover, a common issue for adaptive systems is the one of deciding the initial configuration of the application and/or the run-time environment at the time of service instantiation. In this paper, we propose a QoS registry for coping with these issues and supporting the configuration of proper scheduling parameters in real-time Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs). The registry permits to gather QoS data related to different functional behaviors of applications, to predict the future trend based on data already collected and to permanently store such data for an effective reuse at the time of future re-instantiations. We have also built an implementation of such registry, computed its overhead costs and performed some experiments for showing the effectiveness in auto-tuning resource allocations for providing QoS guarantees in a real-time SOA

    Flattening Hierarchical Scheduling.

    ABSTRACT Recently, the application of virtual-machine technology to integrate real-time systems into a single host has received significant attention and caused controversy. Drawing two examples from mixed-criticality systems, we demonstrate that current virtualization technology, which handles guest scheduling as a black box, is incompatible with this modern scheduling discipline. However, there is a simple solution by exporting sufficient information for the host scheduler to overcome this problem. We describe the problem, the modification required on the guest and show on the example of two practical real-time operating systems how flattening the hierarchical scheduling problem resolves the issue. We conclude by showing the limitations of our technique at the current state of our research

    Theoretical Fundamentals of Real-time Virtualization from the Resource Management Perspective

    A Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) partitions a host physical machine into a group of Virtual Machines (VMs). Typically, a VM machine only preempts a part of a dedicated physical resource temporally or spatially. This fact greatly impacts the real-time task scheduling in VMs because most traditional real-time scheduling theories are based on dedicated resources. The real-time community has introduced some Hierarchical Real-Time Scheduling Models to address this issue. Among them, the Regularity-based Resource (RRP) Model is able to provide maximal transparency for task scheduling. However, current theoretical results on the RRP Model are still far from the complete theoretical fundamentals required by a real-time VMM. At the resource level, only a naive algorithm has been found for resource partitioning. At the task level, only the Periodic Task Model is investigated, and even for this task model, only one simple case has been considered. This work explores the RRP Model at both the resource and task levels. On the one hand, it is the first to solve the resource partitioning problem with both global and partitioned strategies. On the other hand, it solves the task scheduling problem with a strong result that the classic task scheduling problem in the RRP Model can be easily transformed into an equivalent problem on a dedicated resource. With these theory enhancements, a 2-layer real-time resource model is presented and the theoretical fundamentals of a real-time VMM are fully established from resource management perspective.Computer Science, Department o

    Le secteur des télécommunications passe par une phase délicate en raison de profondes mutations technologiques, principalement motivées par le développement de l'Internet. Elles ont un impact majeur sur l'industrie des télécommunications dans son ensemble et, par conséquent, sur les futurs déploiements des nouveaux réseaux, plateformes et services. L'évolution de l'Internet a un impact particulièrement fort sur les opérateurs des télécommunications (Telcos). En fait, l'industrie des télécommunications est à la veille de changements majeurs en raison de nombreux facteurs, comme par exemple la banalisation progressive de la connectivité, la domination dans le domaine des services de sociétés du web (Webcos), l'importance croissante de solutions à base de logiciels et la flexibilité qu'elles introduisent (par rapport au système statique des opérateurs télécoms). Cette thèse élabore, propose et compare les scénarios possibles basés sur des solutions et des approches qui sont technologiquement viables. Les scénarios identifiés couvrent un large éventail de possibilités: 1) Telco traditionnel; 2) Telco transporteur de Bits; 3) Telco facilitateur de Plateforme; 4) Telco fournisseur de services; 5) Disparition des Telco. They have a major impact on the telecommunications industry as a whole and, consequently, the future deployment of new networks, platforms and services. The evolution of the Internet has a particularly strong impact on telecommunications operators (Telcos). In fact, the telecommunications industry is on the verge of major changes due to many factors, such as the gradual commoditization of connectivity, the dominance of web services companies (Webcos), the growing importance of software based solutions that introduce flexibility (compared to static system of telecom operators). This thesis develops, proposes and compares plausible future scenarios based on future solutions and approaches that will be technologically feasible and viable.
