Virtual Grid - New Paradigm of System Resources Dynamic Organization
This paper describes the model and software tools for virtualization of the Grid execution environment. The basic assumption of this study is that Virtual Grid (VG) is constructed dynamically according to application requirements with virtualized computational and communication resources. A VG instance is dynamically created for each application and its initial configuration can be further modified during runtime to satisfy the requested level of resource usage and to maintain the quality of service indexes at agreed-upon values. A VG model that takes into account this approach has been proposed and analyzed in the context of Grid-related technology
The AliEn system, status and perspectives
AliEn is a production environment that implements several components of the
Grid paradigm needed to simulate, reconstruct and analyse HEP data in a
distributed way. The system is built around Open Source components, uses the
Web Services model and standard network protocols to implement the computing
platform that is currently being used to produce and analyse Monte Carlo data
at over 30 sites on four continents. The aim of this paper is to present the
current AliEn architecture and outline its future developments in the light of
emerging standards.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Mining Knowledge in Astrophysical Massive Data Sets
Modern scientific data mainly consist of huge datasets gathered by a very
large number of techniques and stored in very diversified and often
incompatible data repositories. More in general, in the e-science environment,
it is considered as a critical and urgent requirement to integrate services
across distributed, heterogeneous, dynamic "virtual organizations" formed by
different resources within a single enterprise. In the last decade, Astronomy
has become an immensely data rich field due to the evolution of detectors
(plates to digital to mosaics), telescopes and space instruments. The Virtual
Observatory approach consists into the federation under common standards of all
astronomical archives available worldwide, as well as data analysis, data
mining and data exploration applications. The main drive behind such effort
being that once the infrastructure will be completed, it will allow a new type
of multi-wavelength, multi-epoch science which can only be barely imagined.
Data Mining, or Knowledge Discovery in Databases, while being the main
methodology to extract the scientific information contained in such MDS
(Massive Data Sets), poses crucial problems since it has to orchestrate complex
problems posed by transparent access to different computing environments,
scalability of algorithms, reusability of resources, etc. In the present paper
we summarize the present status of the MDS in the Virtual Observatory and what
is currently done and planned to bring advanced Data Mining methodologies in
the case of the DAME (DAta Mining & Exploration) project.Comment: Pages 845-849 1rs International Conference on Frontiers in

Proof-of-Concept Application - Annual Report Year 1
In this document the Cat-COVITE Application for use in the CATNETS Project is introduced and motivated. Furthermore an introduction to the catallactic middleware and Web Services Agreement (WS-Agreement) concepts is given as a basis for the future work. Requirements for the application of Cat-COVITE with in catallactic systems are analysed. Finally the integration of the Cat-COVITE application and the catallactic middleware is described. --Grid Computing
