Evaluation of the MDC and FEC over the quality of service and quality of experience for video distribution in ad hoc networks
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) offer an excellent scenario for deploying communication applications because of the connectivity and versatility of this kind of networks. In contrast, the topology is usually extremely dynamic causing high rate of packet loss, so that ensuring a specific Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time video services becomes a hard challenge. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of using Multiple Description Coding (MDC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques for improving video quality in a multimedia content distribution system. A hybrid architecture using fixed and wireless ad hoc networks is proposed, which enables the use of multipoint-to-point transmission. MDC and FEC mechanisms can be combined with multipath transmission to increase the network efficiency and recover lost packets, improving the overall Quality of Experience (QoE) of the receiver. Simulations have been analyzed paying attention to objective parameters (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio, Packet Delivery Ratio, Decodable Frame Rate and interruptions) and subjective parameters. Results show that MDC increases the probability of packet delivery and FEC is able to recover lost frames and reduce video interruptions in moderate mobility scenarios, resulting in the improvement of video quality and the final user experience. This work was supported by project MIQUEL (TEC2007- 68119-C02-01/TCM) of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Error resilient video transcoding for robust inter-network communications using GPRS
A novel fully comprehensive mobile video communications
system is proposed in this paper. This system exploits
the useful rate management features of the video transcoders and
combines them with error resilience for transmissions of coded
video streams over general packet radio service (GPRS) mobileaccess
networks. The error-resilient video transcoding operation
takes place at a centralized point, referred to as a video proxy,
which provides the necessary output transmission rates with the
required amount of robustness. With the use of this proposed
algorithm, error resilience can be added to an already compressed
video stream at an intermediate stage at the edge of two or more
different networks through two resilience schemes, namely the
adaptive intra refresh (AIR) and feedback control signaling (FCS)
methods. Both resilience tools impose an output rate increase
which can also be prevented with the proposed novel technique in
this paper. Thus, an error-resilient video transcoding scheme is
presented to give robust video outputs at near target transmission
rates that only require the same number of GPRS timeslots as
the nonresilient schemes. Moreover, an ultimate robustness is
also accomplished with the combination of the two resilience
algorithms at the video proxy. Extensive computer simulations
demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system
An efficient error resilience scheme based on wyner-ziv coding for region-of-Interest protection of wavelet based video transmission
In this paper, we propose a bandwidth efficient error resilience scheme for wavelet based video
transmission over wireless channel by introducing an additional Wyner-Ziv (WZ) stream to protect region of
interest (ROI) in a frame. In the proposed architecture, the main video stream is compressed by a generic
wavelet domain coding structure and passed through the error prone channel without any protection.
Meanwhile, the predefined ROI area related wavelet coefficients obtained after an integer wavelet transform
will be specially protected by WZ codec in an additional channel during transmission. At the decoder side, the error-prone ROI related wavelet coefficients will be used as side information to help decoding the WZ stream. Different size of WZ bit streams can be applied in order to meet different bandwidth condition and different
requirement of end users. The simulation results clearly revealed that the proposed scheme has distinct advantages in saving bandwidth comparing with fully applied FEC algorithm to whole video stream and in the meantime offer the robust transmission over error prone channel for certain video applications
Multi-user video streaming using unequal error protection network coding in wireless networks
In this paper, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to capture the fundamental system behaviour. Our goal is to present analytical tools that provide both the decoding probability analysis and the expected delay guarantees for different importance layers of scalable video streams. Using the proposed tools, we offer a simple framework for design and analysis of UEP NC based multi-user video streaming systems and provide examples of system design for video conferencing scenario in broadband wireless cellular networks
Open-Source Telemedicine Platform for Wireless Medical Video Communication
An m-health system for real-time wireless communication of medical video based on open-source software is presented. The objective is to deliver a low-cost telemedicine platform which will allow for reliable remote diagnosis m-health applications such as emergency incidents, mass population screening, and medical education purposes. The performance of the proposed system is demonstrated using five atherosclerotic plaque ultrasound videos. The videos are encoded at the clinically acquired resolution, in addition to lower, QCIF, and CIF resolutions, at different bitrates, and four different encoding structures. Commercially available wireless local area network (WLAN) and 3.5G high-speed packet access (HSPA) wireless channels are used to validate the developed platform. Objective video quality assessment is based on PSNR ratings, following calibration using the variable frame delay (VFD) algorithm that removes temporal mismatch between original and received videos. Clinical evaluation is based on atherosclerotic plaque ultrasound video assessment protocol. Experimental results show that adequate diagnostic quality wireless medical video communications are realized using the designed telemedicine platform. HSPA cellular networks provide for ultrasound video transmission at the acquired resolution, while VFD algorithm utilization bridges objective and subjective ratings
EFFICIENT WIRELESS VIDEO TRANSMISSION VIA LINKLAYER FEC FOR VIDEO COMMUNICATIONS
In this paper, new analysis and performance of robust error-model are presented for MPEG-4 video stream over wireless point-to-point network. Analytical expressions assume a noisy wireless environment causing frequent and random bit errors associated with packets. By this model, the temporal video scalability can be evaluated under TCP-Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) transmission when the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hochquenghem (BCH) channel coding is employed as a forward-error- correction (FEC) at a radio link layer. A FEC provides an efficient throughput access on wireless network. The numerical results clearly indicate that a quality of service (QoS) can be improved at low channel SNR region when the maximum channel coding throughput is achieved
