    Service level Indication: A proposal for QoS monitoring in SLA -based multidomain networks

    The offering of QoS based communication services has to face several challenges. Among these, the provisioning of an open and formalised framework for the collection and interchange of monitoring and performance data is feit as one of the most important issues to be solved. Indeed, this is true in seenarios where multiple providers are teaming (intentionally or not) for the construction of a complex service to be sold to a final user, like in the case of the creation of a virtual private network spanning multiple network Operators and infrastructures. In this case, failures in providing certain required Ievels in the quality parameters should be dealt with an immediate attribution of responsibility across the different entities involved in the end-to-end provisioning of the service. But also in cases apparently much simpler, for example when an user requires a video strearning service across a single operator network infrastructure, there is a demand for mechanisms for the measurement of the received quality of service across all the elements involved in the service provisioning: the server system, the network infrastructure, the dient terminal and the user application. lt is clear that this is a complex problem, involving different technologies, disciplines and research areas. In this paper, starting from the ongoing work in the definition of standard interfaces for the Quality of Service negotiation (Service Level Agreements) and control (Service Level Specifications), as weil as from the work ongoing in the IPFIX and IPPM working groups from the IETF, we introduce a new document specifically for delivering monitoring information to user applications.     Service management for multi-domain Active Networks

    The Internet is an example of a multi-agent system. In our context, an agent is synonymous with network operators, Internet service providers (ISPs) and content providers. ISPs mutually interact for connectivity's sake, but the fact remains that two peering agents are inevitably self-interested. Egoistic behaviour manifests itself in two ways. Firstly, the ISPs are able to act in an environment where different ISPs would have different spheres of influence, in the sense that they will have control and management responsibilities over different parts of the environment. On the other hand, contention occurs when an ISP intends to sell resources to another, which gives rise to at least two of its customers sharing (hence contending for) a common transport medium. The multi-agent interaction was analysed by simulating a game theoretic approach and the alignment of dominant strategies adopted by agents with evolving traits were abstracted. In particular, the contention for network resources is arbitrated such that a self-policing environment may emerge from a congested bottleneck. Over the past 5 years, larger ISPs have simply peddled as fast as they could to meet the growing demand for bandwidth by throwing bandwidth at congestion problems. Today, the dire financial positions of Worldcom and Global Crossing illustrate, to a certain degree, the fallacies of over-provisioning network resources. The proposed framework in this thesis enables subscribers of an ISP to monitor and police each other's traffic in order to establish a well-behaved norm in utilising limited resources. This framework can be expanded to other inter-domain bottlenecks within the Internet. One of the main objectives of this thesis is also to investigate the impact on multi-domain service management in the future Internet, where active nodes could potentially be located amongst traditional passive routers. The advent of Active Networking technology necessitates node-level computational resource allocations, in addition to prevailing resource reservation approaches for communication bandwidth. Our motivation is to ensure that a service negotiation protocol takes account of these resources so that the response to a specific service deployment request from the end-user is consistent and predictable. To promote the acceleration of service deployment by means of Active Networking technology, a pricing model is also evaluated for computational resources (e.g., CPU time and memory). Previous work in these areas of research only concentrate on bandwidth (i.e., communication) - related resources. Our pricing approach takes account of both guaranteed and best-effort service by adapting the arbitrage theorem from financial theory. The central tenet for our approach is to synthesise insights from different disciplines to address problems in data networks. The greater parts of research experience have been obtained during direct and indirect participation in the 1ST-10561 project known as FAIN (Future Active IP Networks) and ACTS-AC338 project called MIAMI (Mobile Intelligent Agent for Managing the Information Infrastructure). The Inter-domain Manager (IDM) component was integrated as an integral part of the FAIN policy-based network management systems (PBNM). Its monitoring component (developed during the MIAMI project) learns about routing changes that occur within a domain so that the management system and the managed nodes have the same topological view of the network. This enabled our reservation mechanism to reserve resources along the existing route set up by whichever underlying routing protocol is in place

    Crowdsourcing innovation: a proposal for a brokering architecture focused in the innovation needs of SMEs

    Crowdsourcing is evolving into powerful outsourcing options for organizations by providing access to the intellectual capital within a vast knowledge community. Innovation brokering services have emerged to facilitate crowdsourcing projects by connecting up companies with potential solution providers within the wider ‘crowd’. Most existing innovation brokering services are primarily aimed at larger organizations, however, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) offer considerable potential for crowdsourcing activity since they are typically the innovation and employment engines in society; they are typically more nimble and responsive to the business environment than the larger companies. SMEs have very different challenges and needs to larger organizations since they have fewer resources, a more limited knowledge and skill base, and immature management practices. Consequently, innovation brokering for SMEs require considerably more support than for larger organizations. This paper identifies the crowdsourcing innovation brokerage facilities needed by SMEs, and presents an architecture that encourages knowledge sharing, development of community, support in mixing and matching capabilities, and management of stakeholders’ risks. As PME têm desafios e necessidades muito diferentes das organizações maiores, uma vez que têm menos recursos, um conhecimento mais limitado e base de habilidades e práticas de gestão imaturas.     Service Level Agreement-based adaptation management for Internet Service Provider (ISP) using Fuzzy Q-learning

    Internet access is the vital catalyst for online users, and the number of mobile subscribers is predicted to grow from dramatically in the next few years. This huge demand is the main issue facing the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who need to handle users’ expectations along with their current resources. An adaptive mechanism within the ISPs architecture is a promising solution to handle such situation. A Service Level Agreement (SLA)is the legal catalyst to monitor any contract violation between end users and ISPs and is embedded within a Quality of Service (QoS) framework. It strengthens and advances the quality of control over the user’s application and network resources and can be further stretched to fulfill the QoS terms through negotiation and re-negotiation. Moreover, the present literature does not focus on the combination of rule-based approaches and adaptation together to update the established learning repository. Therefore, this mainstream of this research in the context of SLAs is to fill in this gap by addressing the combination of rule-base uncertainties and iteration of the learning ability. The key to the proposed architecture is the utilization of self - * capabilities designed to have self-management over uncertainties and the provision of self-adaptive interactions. Thus, the Monitor, Analyse, Plan, Execute and Knowledge Base (MAPE-K) approach is able to deal with this problem together with the integration of Fuzzy and Q-Learning algorithms. The proposed architecture is in the context of autonomic computing. An adaptation manager is the main proposed component to update admission control on the ISP current resources and the ability to manage SLAs. A general methodology type-2 fuzzy logic is applied to ensure the uncertainties and precise decision-making are well addressed in this research. The proposed solution, demonstrating Q-Learning works adaptive with QoS parameters, e.g. Latency, Availability and Packet Loss. With the combination of fuzzy and Q-Learning, we demonstrate that the proposed adaptation manager is able to handle the uncertainties and learning abilities. Q-Learning is able to identify the initial state from various ISPs iterations and update them with appropriate actions, reflecting the reward configurations. The higher the iterations process the higher is the increase the learning ability,rewards and exploration probability. The research outcomes benefit the SLA framework by incorporating the information for SLA policies and Service Level Objectives (SLOs). Lastly, an important contribution is the ability to demonstrate that the MAPE-K approach is a contender for ISP SLA-based frameworks for QoS provision

    A Reference Architecture for Service Lifecycle Management – Construction and Application to Designing and Analyzing IT Support

    Service-orientation and the underlying concept of service-oriented architectures are a means to successfully address the need for flexibility and interoperability of software applications, which in turn leads to improved IT support of business processes. With a growing level of diffusion, sophistication and maturity, the number of services and interdependencies is gradually rising. This increasingly requires companies to implement a systematic management of services along their entire lifecycle. Service lifecycle management (SLM), i.e., the management of services from the initiating idea to their disposal, is becoming a crucial success factor. Not surprisingly, the academic and practice communities increasingly postulate comprehensive IT support for SLM to counteract the inherent complexity. The topic is still in its infancy, with no comprehensive models available that help evaluating and designing IT support in SLM. This thesis presents a reference architecture for SLM and applies it to the evaluation and designing of SLM IT support in companies. The artifact, which largely resulted from consortium research efforts, draws from an extensive analysis of existing SLM applications, case studies, focus group discussions, bilateral interviews and existing literature. Formal procedure models and a configuration terminology allow adapting and applying the reference architecture to a company’s individual setting. Corresponding usage examples prove its applicability and demonstrate the arising benefits within various SLM IT support design and evaluation tasks. A statistical analysis of the knowledge embodied within the reference data leads to novel, highly significant findings. For example, contemporary standard applications do not yet emphasize the lifecycle concept but rather tend to focus on small parts of the lifecycle, especially on service operation. This forces user companies either into a best-of-breed or a custom-development strategy if they are to implement integrated IT support for their SLM activities. SLM software vendors and internal software development units need to undergo a paradigm shift in order to better reflect the numerous interdependencies and increasing intertwining within services’ lifecycles.     General cost analysis for scholarly communication in Germany : results of the "Houghton Report" for Germany

    Management Summary: Conducted within the project “Economic Implications of New Models for Information Supply for Science and Research in Germany”, the Houghton Report for Germany provides a general cost and benefit analysis for scientific communication in Germany comparing different scenarios according to their specific costs and explicitly including the German National License Program (NLP). Basing on the scholarly lifecycle process model outlined by Björk (2007), the study compared the following scenarios according to their accounted costs: - Traditional subscription publishing, - Open access publishing (Gold Open Access; refers primarily to journal publishing where access is free of charge to readers, while the authors or funding organisations pay for publication) - Open Access self-archiving (authors deposit their work in online open access institutional or subject-based repositories, making it freely available to anyone with Internet access; further divided into (i) CGreen Open Access’ self-archiving operating in parallel with subscription publishing; and (ii) the ‘overlay services’ model in which self-archiving provides the foundation for overlay services (e.g. peer review, branding and quality control services)) - the NLP. Within all scenarios, five core activity elements (Fund research and research communication; perform research and communicate the results; publish scientific and scholarly works; facilitate dissemination, retrieval and preservation; study publications and apply the knowledge) were modeled and priced with all their including activities. Modelling the impacts of an increase in accessibility and efficiency resulting from more open access on returns to R&D over a 20 year period and then comparing costs and benefits, we find that the benefits of open access publishing models are likely to substantially outweigh the costs and, while smaller, the benefits of the German NLP also exceed the costs. This analysis of the potential benefits of more open access to research findings suggests that different publishing models can make a material difference to the benefits realised, as well as the costs faced. It seems likely that more Open Access would have substantial net benefits in the longer term and, while net benefits may be lower during a transitional period, they are likely to be positive for both ‘author-pays’ Open Access publishing and the ‘over-lay journals’ alternatives (‘Gold Open Access’), and for parallel subscription publishing and self-archiving (‘Green Open Access’). The NLP returns substantial benefits and savings at a modest cost, returning one of the highest benefit/cost ratios available from unilateral national policies during a transitional period (second to that of ‘Green Open Access’ self-archiving). Whether ‘Green Open Access’ self-archiving in parallel with subscriptions is a sustainable model over the longer term is debateable, and what impact the NLP may have on the take up of Open Access alternatives is also an important consideration. So too is the potential for developments in Open Access or other scholarly publishing business models to significantly change the relative cost-benefit of the NLP over time. The results are comparable to those of previous studies from the UK and Netherlands. Green Open Access in parallel with the traditional model yields the best benefits/cost ratio. Beside its benefits/cost ratio, the meaningfulness of the NLP is given by its enforceability. The true costs of toll access publishing (beside the buyback” of information) is the prohibition of access to research and knowledge for society

Funções de rede como a NAT, DNS e IMS são separadas do hardware físico para software através desta tecnologia.Esta tese explica a motivação e solução da criação de um Marketplace para funções NFV. O Marketplace será capaz de acelerar o processo de Aprovisionamento no NFV. Está definido para fornecer aos clientes as funcionalidades de descarregamento, comparação e instalação de VNFs que melhor correspondem às suas necessidades.Nowadays virtualisation has been very important worldwide because it can make network applications with the efficiency and flexibility of software applications.
