    Guided listening as an aid to musical growth in the elementary school child

    Thesis (M.M.E.)--Boston University.Statement of the problem. It was the purpose of this study (1) to clarify some desirable objectives and procedures for guiding and motivating children's growing musical perceptions through listening; and (2) to suggest ways of presenting selected music literature in the primary and intermediate grades in such a way that it implements these objectives and encourages growth in perceptive listening. Methods and procedures. Basically, a library research study, the sources of data included a review of current literature in music education and general elementary education. Books, periodicals, yearbooks, and publications of learned societies were consulted, as well as books on music and musicians.     Elaborate thinking from reading in the primary grades

    Thesis (Ed.M.)--Boston UniversityElaborative thinking is an aspect of thought, a significant area in which creative minds are most active. Primary grade children often have vivid imaginations and elaborate on certain ideas. This ability sometimes may be lost as children grow and are taught adult methods of thought processes. It is the authors' hope to cultivate this ability of children to think imaginatively and creatively. Exercises in elaborative thinking have been constructed and successfully tried on intermediate grade children. No such exercises have been available to children in primary grades. The purpose of this study is to construct exercises in elaborative thinking for children in the primary grades, and to conduct an informal evaluation of them

    A Qualitative Study Utilizing Non-Fiction African-American Folktales: Process and Product with Struggling Second, Third, and Fifth Graders in North Louisiana

    This dissertation presents a qualitative of a study utilizing non-fiction African-American Folktales with struggling readers in second, third, and fifth grades. The study was conducted to explore how teachers, reading/library media specialists, and students utilize a variety of non-fiction folktales in their classrooms and the library media center. From this topic the following research questions were devised. The researcher discovered the challenges that teachers are faced with the implementation of folktales, how is folktales aligned with the (CCSS) Common Core State Standards, what role do heroes play in folktales, and what traits and/or characteristics would students prefer their hero to have. This qualitative study was conducted due to a curriculum change on the local, state, and national levels. Implications of these findings through process and product are discussed in this study. The results of this study indicate that the Common Core State Standards curriculum guide need to be revised and the selection of folktale stories in the curriculum need to be increased in the library and the classrooms in order for education to improve
