Virtual to Real Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Driving
Reinforcement learning is considered as a promising direction for driving
policy learning. However, training autonomous driving vehicle with
reinforcement learning in real environment involves non-affordable
trial-and-error. It is more desirable to first train in a virtual environment
and then transfer to the real environment. In this paper, we propose a novel
realistic translation network to make model trained in virtual environment be
workable in real world. The proposed network can convert non-realistic virtual
image input into a realistic one with similar scene structure. Given realistic
frames as input, driving policy trained by reinforcement learning can nicely
adapt to real world driving. Experiments show that our proposed virtual to real
(VR) reinforcement learning (RL) works pretty well. To our knowledge, this is
the first successful case of driving policy trained by reinforcement learning
that can adapt to real world driving data
Towards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds
We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on
the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating
amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and
experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates
multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and
short-term and long-term experiences during comprehension. We show that
exploiting diverse information sources can alleviate ambiguities that arise
from contextual use of underspecific referring expressions and unexpressed
argument alternations of verbs. The model is being used to support linguistic
interactions in Rosie, an agent implemented in Soar that learns from

A discriminative approach to grounded spoken language understanding in interactive robotics
Spoken Language Understanding in Interactive Robotics provides computational models of human-machine communication based on the vocal input. However, robots operate in specific environments and the correct interpretation of the spoken sentences depends on the physical, cognitive and linguistic aspects triggered by the operational environment. Grounded language processing should exploit both the physical constraints of the context as well as knowledge assumptions of the robot. These include the subjective perception of the environment that explicitly affects linguistic reasoning. In this work, a standard linguistic pipeline for semantic parsing is extended toward a form of perceptually informed natural language processing that combines discriminative learning and distributional semantics.
