Web based learning on KBSM chemical formulae incorporating selected multiple intelligences
Vision 2020 aspires our nation to establish a progressive and resourceful society that is able to contribute to the scientific and technological civilisation of the future. One of the strategies to achieve this aspiration would be through the system of education whereby web based learning would be a good platform to begin with. The aim of this project is to develop a website for KBSM Chemistry Form Four for the subtopic Chemical Formulae, which is under the topic Chemical Formulae and Equations, Chapter 3. The aim of this website is to provide a web based learning platform for students to learn Chemical Formulae. The theory of Multiple Intelligences has been incorporated in the development of this website. However, only four multiple intelligences are selected in delivering the learning contents. The four intelligences selected are Verbal Linguistics, Logical Mathematical, Visual Spatial and Interpersonal. The Hannafin & Peck Model was adapted throughout the development process, which includes Needs Assessment, Design and Development/ Implementation Phase. Evaluation was carried out simultaneously during all three phases of development. The primary software used in developing this website is Microsoft Office Frontpage. Integration of multimedia elements such as graphics, video and animation are used to enhance the process of learning. It is hoped that this website would benefit students with the selected four intelligences at an optimum level in learning Chemical Formulae
Metacognitive Development and Conceptual Change in Children
There has been little investigation to date of the way metacognition is involved in conceptual change. It has been recognised that analytic metacognition is important to the way older children acquire more sophisticated scientific and mathematical concepts at school. But there has been barely any examination of the role of metacognition in earlier stages of concept acquisition, at the ages that have been the major focus of the developmental psychology of concepts. The growing evidence that even young children have a capacity for procedural metacognition raises the question of whether and how these abilities are involved in conceptual development. More specifically, are there developmental changes in metacognitive abilities that have a wholescale effect on the way children acquire new concepts and replace existing concepts? We show that there is already evidence of at least one plausible example of such a link and argue that these connections deserve to be investigated systematically

Embracing complexity in design is one of the critical issues and challenges of the 21st century. As the realization grows that design activities and artefacts display properties associated with complex adaptive systems, so grows the need to use complexity concepts and methods to understand these properties and inform the design of better artifacts. It is a great challenge because complexity science represents an epistemological and methodological swift that promises a holistic approach in the understanding and operational support of design. But design is also a major contributor in complexity research. Design science is concerned with problems that are fundamental in the sciences in general and complexity sciences in particular. For instance, design has been perceived and studied as a ubiquitous activity inherent in every human activity, as the art of generating hypotheses, as a type of experiment, or as a creative co-evolutionary process. Design science and its established approaches and practices can be a great source for advancement and innovation in complexity science. These proceedings are the result of a workshop organized as part of the activities of a UK government AHRB/EPSRC funded research cluster called Embracing Complexity in Design (www.complexityanddesign.net) and the European Conference in Complex Systems (complexsystems.lri.fr). Chemical discovery as belief revision
In this paper we describe STAHLp, a system that constructs componential models of chemical substances. STAHLp is a descendent of Zytkow and Simon's (1986) STAHL system, and both use chemical reactions and known componential models in order to construct new chemical models. However, STAHLp employs a more unified and effective strategy for recovering from erroneous inferences, based partly on de Kleer's (1984) assumption-based method of belief revision. This involves recording the underlying source beliefs or premises which lead to each inferred reaction or model. Where Zytkow and Simon's system required multiple methods for detecting errors and recovering from them, STAHLp uses a more powerful representation and additional rules which allow a unified method for error detection and recovery. When given the same initial data, the new system constructs the same historically correct models as STAHL, but it has other capabilities as well. In particular, STAHLp can modify data it has been given if this is necessary to achieve consistent models, and then proceed to construct new models based on the revised data
The Borrowers: Researching the cognitive aspects of translation
The paper considers the interdisciplinary interaction of research on the cognitive aspects of translation. Examples of influence from linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, reading and writing research and language technology are given, with examples from specific sub-disciplines within each one. The breadth of borrowing by researchers in cognitive translatology is made apparent, but the minimal influence of cognitive translatology on the respective disciplines themselves is also highlighted. Suggestions for future developments are made, including ways in which the domain of cognitive translatology might exert greater influence on other disciplines
Guidelines For Pursuing and Revealing Data Abstractions
Many data abstraction types, such as networks or set relationships, remain
unfamiliar to data workers beyond the visualization research community. We
conduct a survey and series of interviews about how people describe their data,
either directly or indirectly. We refer to the latter as latent data
abstractions. We conduct a Grounded Theory analysis that (1) interprets the
extent to which latent data abstractions exist, (2) reveals the far-reaching
effects that the interventionist pursuit of such abstractions can have on data
workers, (3) describes why and when data workers may resist such explorations,
and (4) suggests how to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks
through transparency about visualization research perspectives and agendas. We
then use the themes and codes discovered in the Grounded Theory analysis to
develop guidelines for data abstraction in visualization projects. To continue
the discussion, we make our dataset open along with a visual interface for
further exploration

A document management system is a computer system used to track and store electronic documents and/or images of paper documents. The term has some overlap with the concepts of content management systems often viewed as a component of enterprise content management systems and related to digital asset management, document imaging, workflow systems and records management systems.

A State-of-the-art Integrated Transportation Simulation Platform
Nowadays, universities and companies have a huge need for simulation and
modelling methodologies. In the particular case of traffic and transportation,
making physical modifications to the real traffic networks could be highly
expensive, dependent on political decisions and could be highly disruptive to
the environment. However, while studying a specific domain or problem,
analysing a problem through simulation may not be trivial and may need several
simulation tools, hence raising interoperability issues. To overcome these
problems, we propose an agent-directed transportation simulation platform,
through the cloud, by means of services. We intend to use the IEEE standard HLA
(High Level Architecture) for simulators interoperability and agents for
controlling and coordination. Our motivations are to allow multiresolution
analysis of complex domains, to allow experts to collaborate on the analysis of
a common problem and to allow co-simulation and synergy of different
application domains. This paper will start by presenting some preliminary
background concepts to help better understand the scope of this work. After
that, the results of a literature review is shown. Finally, the general
architecture of a transportation simulation platform is proposed
