The Academy of Dental Materials: Providing roots and wings.
ObjectivesThe long history of the Academy of Dental Materials (ADM) is documented with its strategies (a) to rapidly communicate science among its members, (b) to establish special awards to stimulate new science, and (c) to develop new dental materials scientists.MethodsWe searched the history of the last 35 years of the ADM newsletters, transactions, journals, and officer notes. We document the (a) presidents, (b) meeting history, (c) membership growth, and (d) development of special awards through 2019 with the recent creation of the ADM Marshall Post-Doctoral Award.ResultsThere are 36 years of recent ADM history, 42 international meetings, membership growth to 400 individuals from 15 countries, service of 19 presidents, Paffenbarger annual Awardees since 1989, induction of >200 fellows, and recognition of the first winner of Marshall Post-Doctoral Award in 2018. New directions for recruiting members are suggested. Three potential new thrusts for the organization are presented: artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and intensive member mentoring.SignificanceThese suggestions for the ADM provide a path for the ADM to continue to adapt to the ever changing scientific landscape
INTREPID Tephra-II: - 1307F
The INTREPID Tephra project, âEnhancing tephrochronology as a global research tool through improved fingerprinting and correlation techniques and uncertainty modellingâ, was an overarching project of the international community of tephrochronologists of the International Focus Group on Tephrochronology and Volcanism (INTAV), which in turn lies under the auspices of INQUAâs Stratigraphy and Chronology Commission (SACCOM). INTREPIDâs main aim has been to advance our understanding and efficacy in fingerprinting, correlating, and dating techniques, and to evaluate and quantify uncertainty in tephrochronology, and thus enhance our ability to provide the best possible linking, dating and synchronising tool for a wide range of Quaternary research projects around the world. A second aim has been to re-build the global capability of tephrochronology for future research endeavours through mentoring and encouragement of emerging researchers in the discipline

Astrobiology and Society in Europe Today
This book describes the state of astrobiology in Europe today and its relation to the European society at large. With contributions from authors in more than 20 countries and over 30 scientific institutions worldwide, the document illustrates the societal implications of astrobiology and the positive contribution that astrobiology can make to European society. The book has two main objectives:
1. It recommends the establishment of a European Astrobiology Institute (EAI) as an answer to a series of challenges relating to astrobiology but also European research, education, and society at large.
2. It also acknowledges the societal implications of astrobiology, and thus the role of the social sciences and humanities in optimizing the positive contribution that astrobiology can make to the lives of the people of Europe and the challenges they face
OPTICON: EC Optical Infrared Coordination Network for Astronomy
OPTICON, the ICN Optical Infrared Coordination Network for Astronomy, brings
together for the first time the operators of all Europe's medium to large
optical-infrared telescopes, the largest corresponding data archives, and
several user representatives. The OPTICON partners work with their communities
to identify those major challenges for the future development of European
optical-infrared astronomy which require Europe-wide collaboration. OPTICON
sponsors and coordinates developments towards these goals, involving the entire
astronomical community through workshops and meetings targeted towards these
agreed common goals of general importance.Comment: to appear in Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy II, Ed. A.
