Report from GI-Dagstuhl Seminar 16394: Software Performance Engineering in the DevOps World
This report documents the program and the outcomes of GI-Dagstuhl Seminar
16394 "Software Performance Engineering in the DevOps World".
The seminar addressed the problem of performance-aware DevOps. Both, DevOps
and performance engineering have been growing trends over the past one to two
years, in no small part due to the rise in importance of identifying
performance anomalies in the operations (Ops) of cloud and big data systems and
feeding these back to the development (Dev). However, so far, the research
community has treated software engineering, performance engineering, and cloud
computing mostly as individual research areas. We aimed to identify
cross-community collaboration, and to set the path for long-lasting
collaborations towards performance-aware DevOps.
The main goal of the seminar was to bring together young researchers (PhD
students in a later stage of their PhD, as well as PostDocs or Junior
Professors) in the areas of (i) software engineering, (ii) performance
engineering, and (iii) cloud computing and big data to present their current
research projects, to exchange experience and expertise, to discuss research
challenges, and to develop ideas for future collaborations
Testing for flexible nonlinear trends with an integrated or stationary noise component
This paper proposes a new test for the presence of a nonlinear deterministic trend approximated by a Fourier expansion in a univariate time series for which there is no prior knowledge as to whether the noise component is stationary or contains an autoregressive unit root. Our approach builds on the work of Perron and Yabu (2009a) and is based on a Feasible Generalized Least Squares procedure that uses a super-efficient estimator of the sum of the autoregressive coefficients α when α = 1. The resulting Wald test statistic asymptotically follows a chi-square distribution in both the I(0) and I(1) cases. To improve the finite sample properties of the test, we use a bias-corrected version of the OLS estimator of α proposed by Roy and Fuller (2001). We show that our procedure is substantially more powerful than currently available alternatives. We illustrate the usefulness of our method via an application to modelling the trend of global and hemispheric temperatures

Application of Advanced Early Warning Systems with Adaptive Protection
This project developed and field-tested two methods of Adaptive Protection systems utilizing synchrophasor data. One method detects conditions of system stress that can lead to unintended relay operation, and initiates a supervisory signal to modify relay response in real time to avoid false trips. The second method detects the possibility of false trips of impedance relays as stable system swings “encroach” on the relays’ impedance zones, and produces an early warning so that relay engineers can re-evaluate relay settings. In addition, real-time synchrophasor data produced by this project was used to develop advanced visualization techniques for display of synchrophasor data to utility operators and engineers
Evolutionary Approaches to Minimizing Network Coding Resources
We wish to minimize the resources used for network coding while achieving the
desired throughput in a multicast scenario. We employ evolutionary approaches,
based on a genetic algorithm, that avoid the computational complexity that
makes the problem NP-hard. Our experiments show great improvements over the
sub-optimal solutions of prior methods. Our new algorithms improve over our
previously proposed algorithm in three ways. First, whereas the previous
algorithm can be applied only to acyclic networks, our new method works also
with networks with cycles. Second, we enrich the set of components used in the
genetic algorithm, which improves the performance. Third, we develop a novel
distributed framework. Combining distributed random network coding with our
distributed optimization yields a network coding protocol where the resources
used for coding are optimized in the setup phase by running our evolutionary
algorithm at each node of the network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our
approach by carrying out simulations on a number of different sets of network

Analysis and operational challenges of dynamic ride sharing demand responsive transportation models
There is a wide body of evidence that suggests sustainable mobility is not only a technological question, but that automotive technology will be a part of the solution in becoming a necessary albeit insufficient condition. Sufficiency is emerging as a paradigm shift from car ownership to vehicle usage, which is a consequence of socio-economic changes. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) now make it possible for a user to access a mobility service to go anywhere at any time. Among the many emerging mobility services, Multiple Passenger Ridesharing and its variants look the most promising. However, challenges arise in implementing these systems while accounting specifically for time dependencies and time windows that reflect users’ needs, specifically in terms of real-time fleet dispatching and dynamic route calculation. On the other hand, we must consider the feasibility and impact analysis of the many factors influencing the behavior of the system – as, for example, service demand, the size of the service fleet, the capacity of the shared vehicles and whether the time window requirements are soft or tight. This paper analyzes - a Decision Support System that computes solutions with ad hoc heuristics applied to variants of Pick Up and Delivery Problems with Time Windows, as well as to Feasibility and Profitability criteria rooted in Dynamic Insertion Heuristics. To evaluate the applications, a Simulation Framework is proposed. It is based on a microscopic simulation model that emulates real-time traffic conditions and a real traffic information system. It also interacts with the Decision Support System by feeding it with the required data for making decisions in the simulation that emulate the behavior of the shared fleet. The proposed simulation framework has been implemented in a model of Barcelona’s Central Business District. The obtained results prove the potential feasibility of the mobility concept.Postprint (published version

A Deep Learning Approach to Examine Ischemic ST Changes in Ambulatory ECG Recordings.
Patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are at risk of transient myocardial ischemia (TMI), which could lead to serious morbidity or even mortality. Early detection of myocardial ischemia can reduce damage to heart tissues and improve patient condition. Significant ST change in the electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important marker for detecting myocardial ischemia during the rule-out phase of potential ACS. However, current ECG monitoring software is vastly underused due to excessive false alarms. The present study aims to tackle this problem by combining a novel image-based approach with deep learning techniques to improve the detection accuracy of significant ST depression change. The obtained convolutional neural network (CNN) model yields an average area under the curve (AUC) at 89.6% from an independent testing set. At selected optimal cutoff thresholds, the proposed model yields a mean sensitivity at 84.4% while maintaining specificity at 84.9%
