Improving Aircraft Engines Prognostics and Health Management via Anticipated Model-Based Validation of Health Indicators
The aircraft engines manufacturing industry is subjected to many dependability constraints from certification authorities and economic background. In particular, the costs induced by unscheduled maintenance and delays and cancellations impose to ensure a minimum level of availability. For this purpose, Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) is used as a means to perform online periodic assessment of the engines’ health status. The whole PHM methodology is based on the processing of some variables reflecting the system’s health status named Health Indicators. The collecting of HI is an on-board embedded task which has to be specified before the entry into service for matters of retrofit costs. However, the current development methodology of PHM systems is considered as a marginal task in the industry and it is observed that most of the time, the set of HI is defined too late and only in a qualitative way. In this paper, the authors propose a novel development methodology for PHM systems centered on an anticipated model-based validation of HI. This validation is based on the use of uncertainties propagation to simulate the distributions of HI including the randomness of parameters. The paper defines also some performance metrics and criteria for the validation of the HI set. Eventually, the methodology is applied to the development of a PHM solution for an aircraft engine actuation loop. It reveals a lack of performance of the original set of HI and allows defining new ones in order to meet the specifications before the entry into service
CoRide: Joint Order Dispatching and Fleet Management for Multi-Scale Ride-Hailing Platforms
How to optimally dispatch orders to vehicles and how to tradeoff between
immediate and future returns are fundamental questions for a typical
ride-hailing platform. We model ride-hailing as a large-scale parallel ranking
problem and study the joint decision-making task of order dispatching and fleet
management in online ride-hailing platforms. This task brings unique challenges
in the following four aspects. First, to facilitate a huge number of vehicles
to act and learn efficiently and robustly, we treat each region cell as an
agent and build a multi-agent reinforcement learning framework. Second, to
coordinate the agents from different regions to achieve long-term benefits, we
leverage the geographical hierarchy of the region grids to perform hierarchical
reinforcement learning. Third, to deal with the heterogeneous and variant
action space for joint order dispatching and fleet management, we design the
action as the ranking weight vector to rank and select the specific order or
the fleet management destination in a unified formulation. Fourth, to achieve
the multi-scale ride-hailing platform, we conduct the decision-making process
in a hierarchical way where a multi-head attention mechanism is utilized to
incorporate the impacts of neighbor agents and capture the key agent in each
scale. The whole novel framework is named as CoRide. Extensive experiments
based on multiple cities real-world data as well as analytic synthetic data
demonstrate that CoRide provides superior performance in terms of platform
revenue and user experience in the task of city-wide hybrid order dispatching
and fleet management over strong baselines.Comment: CIKM 201
A graph-based aspect interference detection approach for UML-based aspect-oriented models
Aspect Oriented Modeling (AOM) techniques facilitate separate modeling of concerns and allow for a more flexible composition of these than traditional modeling technique. While this improves the understandability of each submodel, in order to reason about the behavior of the composed system and to detect conflicts among submodels, automated tool support is required. Current techniques for conflict detection among aspects generally have at least one of the following weaknesses. They require to manually model the abstract semantics for each system; or they derive the system semantics from code assuming one specific aspect-oriented language. Defining an extra semantics model for verification bears the risk of inconsistencies between the actual and the verified design; verifying only at implementation level hinders fixng errors in earlier phases. We propose a technique for fully automatic detection of conflicts between aspects at the model level; more specifically, our approach works on UML models with an extension for modeling pointcuts and advice. As back-end we use a graph-based model checker, for which we have defined an operational semantics of UML diagrams, pointcuts and advice. In order to simulate the system, we automatically derive a graph model from the diagrams. The result is another graph, which represents all possible program executions, and which can be verified against a declarative specification of invariants.\ud
To demonstrate our approach, we discuss a UML-based AOM model of the "Crisis Management System" and a possible design and evolution scenario. The complexity of the system makes con°icts among composed aspects hard to detect: already in the case of two simulated aspects, the state space contains 623 di®erent states and 9 different execution paths. Abstracting object interactions using composition filters
It is generally claimed that object-based models are very suitable for building distributed system architectures since object interactions follow the client-server model. To cope with the complexity of today's distributed systems, however, we think that high-level linguistic mechanisms are needed to effectively structure, abstract and reuse object interactions. For example, the conventional object-oriented model does not provide high-level language mechanisms to model layered system architectures. Moreover, we consider the message passing model of the conventional object-oriented model as being too low-level because it can only specify object interactions that involve two partner objects at a time and its semantics cannot be extended easily. This paper introduces Abstract Communication Types (ACTs), which are objects that abstract interactions among objects. ACTs make it easier to model layered communication architectures, to enforce the invariant behavior among objects, to reduce the complexity of programs by hiding the interaction details in separate modules and to improve reusability through the application of object-oriented principles to ACT classes. Julia: A Fresh Approach to Numerical Computing
Bridging cultures that have often been distant, Julia combines expertise from
the diverse fields of computer science and computational science to create a
new approach to numerical computing. Julia is designed to be easy and fast.
Julia questions notions generally held as "laws of nature" by practitioners of
numerical computing:
1. High-level dynamic programs have to be slow.
2. One must prototype in one language and then rewrite in another language
for speed or deployment, and
3. There are parts of a system for the programmer, and other parts best left
untouched as they are built by the experts.
We introduce the Julia programming language and its design --- a dance
between specialization and abstraction. Specialization allows for custom
treatment. Multiple dispatch, a technique from computer science, picks the
right algorithm for the right circumstance. Abstraction, what good computation
is really about, recognizes what remains the same after differences are
stripped away. Abstractions in mathematics are captured as code through another
technique from computer science, generic programming.
Julia shows that one can have machine performance without sacrificing human

Strategic polymorphism requires just two combinators!
In previous work, we introduced the notion of functional strategies:
first-class generic functions that can traverse terms of any type while mixing
uniform and type-specific behaviour. Functional strategies transpose the notion
of term rewriting strategies (with coverage of traversal) to the functional
programming paradigm. Meanwhile, a number of Haskell-based models and
combinator suites were proposed to support generic programming with functional
strategies.
In the present paper, we provide a compact and matured reconstruction of
functional strategies. We capture strategic polymorphism by just two primitive
combinators. This is done without commitment to a specific functional language.
We analyse the design space for implementational models of functional
strategies. For completeness, we also provide an operational reference model
for implementing functional strategies (in Haskell). We demonstrate the
generality of our approach by reconstructing representative fragments of the

Agent fabrication and its implementation for agent-based electronic commerce
In the last decade, agent-based e-commerce has emerged as a potential role for the next generation of e-commerce. How to create agents for e-commerce applications has become a serious consideration in this field. This paper proposes a new scheme named agent fabrication and elaborates its implementation in multi-agent systems based on the SAFER (Secure Agent Fabrication, Evolution & Roaming) architecture. First, a conceptual structure is proposed for software agents carrying out e-commerce activities. Furthermore, agent module suitcase is defined to facilitate agent fabrication. With these definitions and facilities in the SAFER architecture, the formalities of agent fabrication are elaborated. In order to enhance the security of agent-based e-commerce, an infrastructure of agent authorization and authentication is integrated in agent fabrication. Our implementation and prototype applications show that the proposed agent fabrication scheme brings forth a potential solution for creating agents in agent-based e-commerce applications
Optimizing production scheduling of steel plate hot rolling for economic load dispatch under time-of-use electricity pricing
Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity pricing provides an opportunity for industrial
users to cut electricity costs. Although many methods for Economic Load
Dispatch (ELD) under TOU pricing in continuous industrial processing have been
proposed, there are still difficulties in batch-type processing since power
load units are not directly adjustable and nonlinearly depend on production
planning and scheduling. In this paper, for hot rolling, a typical batch-type
and energy intensive process in steel industry, a production scheduling
optimization model for ELD is proposed under TOU pricing, in which the
objective is to minimize electricity costs while considering penalties caused
by jumps between adjacent slabs. A NSGA-II based multi-objective production
scheduling algorithm is developed to obtain Pareto-optimal solutions, and then
TOPSIS based multi-criteria decision-making is performed to recommend an
optimal solution to facilitate filed operation. Experimental results and
analyses show that the proposed method cuts electricity costs in production,
especially in case of allowance for penalty score increase in a certain range.
Further analyses show that the proposed method has effect on peak load
