Enriched Long-term Recurrent Convolutional Network for Facial Micro-Expression Recognition
Facial micro-expression (ME) recognition has posed a huge challenge to
researchers for its subtlety in motion and limited databases. Recently,
handcrafted techniques have achieved superior performance in micro-expression
recognition but at the cost of domain specificity and cumbersome parametric
tunings. In this paper, we propose an Enriched Long-term Recurrent
Convolutional Network (ELRCN) that first encodes each micro-expression frame
into a feature vector through CNN module(s), then predicts the micro-expression
by passing the feature vector through a Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) module.
The framework contains two different network variants: (1) Channel-wise
stacking of input data for spatial enrichment, (2) Feature-wise stacking of
features for temporal enrichment. We demonstrate that the proposed approach is
able to achieve reasonably good performance, without data augmentation. In
addition, we also present ablation studies conducted on the framework and
visualizations of what CNN "sees" when predicting the micro-expression classes.Comment: Published in Micro-Expression Grand Challenge 2018, Workshop of 13th

Facial Action Unit Detection Using Attention and Relation Learning
Attention mechanism has recently attracted increasing attentions in the field
of facial action unit (AU) detection. By finding the region of interest of each
AU with the attention mechanism, AU-related local features can be captured.
Most of the existing attention based AU detection works use prior knowledge to
predefine fixed attentions or refine the predefined attentions within a small
range, which limits their capacity to model various AUs. In this paper, we
propose an end-to-end deep learning based attention and relation learning
framework for AU detection with only AU labels, which has not been explored
before. In particular, multi-scale features shared by each AU are learned
firstly, and then both channel-wise and spatial attentions are adaptively
learned to select and extract AU-related local features. Moreover, pixel-level
relations for AUs are further captured to refine spatial attentions so as to
extract more relevant local features. Without changing the network
architecture, our framework can be easily extended for AU intensity estimation.
Extensive experiments show that our framework (i) soundly outperforms the
state-of-the-art methods for both AU detection and AU intensity estimation on
the challenging BP4D, DISFA, FERA 2015 and BP4D+ benchmarks, (ii) can
adaptively capture the correlated regions of each AU, and (iii) also works well
under severe occlusions and large poses.Comment: This paper is accepted by IEEE Transactions on Affective Computin
CMS-RCNN: Contextual Multi-Scale Region-based CNN for Unconstrained Face Detection
Robust face detection in the wild is one of the ultimate components to
support various facial related problems, i.e. unconstrained face recognition,
facial periocular recognition, facial landmarking and pose estimation, facial
expression recognition, 3D facial model construction, etc. Although the face
detection problem has been intensely studied for decades with various
commercial applications, it still meets problems in some real-world scenarios
due to numerous challenges, e.g. heavy facial occlusions, extremely low
resolutions, strong illumination, exceptionally pose variations, image or video
compression artifacts, etc. In this paper, we present a face detection approach
named Contextual Multi-Scale Region-based Convolution Neural Network (CMS-RCNN)
to robustly solve the problems mentioned above. Similar to the region-based
CNNs, our proposed network consists of the region proposal component and the
region-of-interest (RoI) detection component. However, far apart of that
network, there are two main contributions in our proposed network that play a
significant role to achieve the state-of-the-art performance in face detection.
Firstly, the multi-scale information is grouped both in region proposal and RoI
detection to deal with tiny face regions. Secondly, our proposed network allows
explicit body contextual reasoning in the network inspired from the intuition
of human vision system. The proposed approach is benchmarked on two recent
challenging face detection databases, i.e. the WIDER FACE Dataset which
contains high degree of variability, as well as the Face Detection Dataset and
Benchmark (FDDB). The experimental results show that our proposed approach
trained on WIDER FACE Dataset outperforms strong baselines on WIDER FACE
Dataset by a large margin, and consistently achieves competitive results on
FDDB against the recent state-of-the-art face detection methods
MoFA: Model-based Deep Convolutional Face Autoencoder for Unsupervised Monocular Reconstruction
In this work we propose a novel model-based deep convolutional autoencoder
that addresses the highly challenging problem of reconstructing a 3D human face
from a single in-the-wild color image. To this end, we combine a convolutional
encoder network with an expert-designed generative model that serves as
decoder. The core innovation is our new differentiable parametric decoder that
encapsulates image formation analytically based on a generative model. Our
decoder takes as input a code vector with exactly defined semantic meaning that
encodes detailed face pose, shape, expression, skin reflectance and scene
illumination. Due to this new way of combining CNN-based with model-based face
reconstruction, the CNN-based encoder learns to extract semantically meaningful
parameters from a single monocular input image. For the first time, a CNN
encoder and an expert-designed generative model can be trained end-to-end in an
unsupervised manner, which renders training on very large (unlabeled) real
world data feasible. The obtained reconstructions compare favorably to current
state-of-the-art approaches in terms of quality and richness of representation.Comment: International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 2017 (Oral), 13
