Evolutionary framework with reinforcement learning-based mutation adaptation
Although several multi-operator and multi-method approaches for solving optimization problems have been proposed, their performances are not consistent for a wide range of optimization problems. Also, the task of ensuring the appropriate selection of algorithms and operators may be inefficient since their designs are undertaken mainly through trial and error. This research proposes an improved optimization framework that uses the benefits of multiple algorithms, namely, a multi-operator differential evolution algorithm and a co-variance matrix adaptation evolution strategy. In the former, reinforcement learning is used to automatically choose the best differential evolution operator. To judge the performance of the proposed framework, three benchmark sets of bound-constrained optimization problems (73 problems) with 10, 30 and 50 dimensions are solved. Further, the proposed algorithm has been tested by solving optimization problems with 100 dimensions taken from CEC2014 and CEC2017 benchmark problems. A real-world application data set has also been solved. Several experiments are designed to analyze the effects of different components of the proposed framework, with the best variant compared with a number of state-of-the-art algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to outperform all the others considered.</p
Adapting Quality Assurance to Adaptive Systems: The Scenario Coevolution Paradigm
From formal and practical analysis, we identify new challenges that
self-adaptive systems pose to the process of quality assurance. When tackling
these, the effort spent on various tasks in the process of software engineering
is naturally re-distributed. We claim that all steps related to testing need to
become self-adaptive to match the capabilities of the self-adaptive
system-under-test. Otherwise, the adaptive system's behavior might elude
traditional variants of quality assurance. We thus propose the paradigm of
scenario coevolution, which describes a pool of test cases and other
constraints on system behavior that evolves in parallel to the (in part
autonomous) development of behavior in the system-under-test. Scenario
coevolution offers a simple structure for the organization of adaptive testing
that allows for both human-controlled and autonomous intervention, supporting
software engineering for adaptive systems on a procedural as well as technical
level.Comment: 17 pages, published at ISOLA 201
Which Surrogate Works for Empirical Performance Modelling? A Case Study with Differential Evolution
It is not uncommon that meta-heuristic algorithms contain some intrinsic
parameters, the optimal configuration of which is crucial for achieving their
peak performance. However, evaluating the effectiveness of a configuration is
expensive, as it involves many costly runs of the target algorithm. Perhaps
surprisingly, it is possible to build a cheap-to-evaluate surrogate that models
the algorithm's empirical performance as a function of its parameters. Such
surrogates constitute an important building block for understanding algorithm
performance, algorithm portfolio/selection, and the automatic algorithm
configuration. In principle, many off-the-shelf machine learning techniques can
be used to build surrogates. In this paper, we take the differential evolution
(DE) as the baseline algorithm for proof-of-concept study. Regression models
are trained to model the DE's empirical performance given a parameter
configuration. In particular, we evaluate and compare four popular regression
algorithms both in terms of how well they predict the empirical performance
with respect to a particular parameter configuration, and also how well they
approximate the parameter versus the empirical performance landscapes
