    Internet Interconnection Ecosystem in Finland

    For both fixed and mobile network operators, interconnection constitutes an indisputably key element to provide end users with a variety of services. Internet interconnection is particularly an intriguing subject due to the importance of the Internet in our everyday lives and our genuine curiosity to grasp its underlying structure. This thesis aims to provide a holistic approach to study the Internet interconnections in a nation-centric stance. To accomplish the objective, initially the method that breaks down the key features of the interconnection analysis is introduced. The nation-centric analysis is conducted for Finland by jointly utilizing the Internet registry data and collected Internet routing data. Covering the last decade of the Finnish Internet, the longitudinal analysis yields significant findings for the Internet address usage statistics and the level of multi-homed networks, along with the classification and inference of relationships between stakeholders in the interconnection ecosystem. The implications that the emerging interconnection models pose for the future global service delivery among both fixed and mobile networks are expounded from the perspective of the existing domestic interconnection practices. The longitudinal interconnectivity study allows us to comprehend both technical and business interfaces between market players by revealing a complete list of customer-provider relationships. Within a national milieu, the assessment of the current Internet market dynamics and future implications of emerging models can be considered in more rationally anticipated manner. Hence, authorities who desire to design new pricing schemes and policies for future networking interconnections can be guided more thoroughly

    Traffic Regulation with Single- and Dual-homed ISPs Under a Percentile-based Pricing Policy

    We investigate how a customer (an enterprise or a large organization), when facing a percentile-based pricing policy, can optimally balance the Internet access cost and the traffic buffering delay penalty by traffic regulation. The problem is referred to as the Optimal Traffic Regulation (OTR) problem. Solutions to various cases of the OTR problem are provided. For a customer with a single-homed ISP, we present optimal solutions to the OTR problem based on dynamic programming for the offline case with a known traffic demand pattern. A real-time traffic scheduling algorithm is proposed to deal with the online case where the traffic demands are different from a given demand pattern. We further extend the dynamic programming model to the case of dual-homed ISPs. Experimental results on the data from an Internet trace confirm the effectiveness of our solutions

    Network monitoring in public clouds: issues, methodologies, and applications

    Cloud computing adoption is rapidly growing thanks to the carried large technical and economical advantages. Its effects can be observed also looking at the fast increase of cloud traffic: in accordance with recent forecasts, more than 75\% of the overall datacenter traffic will be cloud traffic by 2018. Accordingly, huge investments have been made by providers in network infrastructures. Networks of geographically distributed datacenters have been built, which require efficient and accurate monitoring activities to be operated. However, providers rarely expose information about the state of cloud networks or their design, and seldom make promises about their performance. In this scenario, cloud customers therefore have to cope with performance unpredictability in spite of the primary role played by the network. Indeed, according to the deployment practices adopted and the functional separation of the application layers often implemented, the network heavily influences the performance of the cloud services, also impacting costs and revenues. In this thesis cloud networks are investigated enforcing non-cooperative approaches, i.e.~that do not require access to any information restricted to entities involved in the cloud service provision. A platform to monitor cloud networks from the point of view of the customer is presented. Such a platform enables general customers---even those with limited expertise in the configuration and the management of cloud resources---to obtain valuable information about the state of the cloud network, according to a set of factors under their control. A detailed characterization of the cloud network and of its performance is provided, thanks to extensive experimentations performed during the last years on the infrastructures of the two leading cloud providers (Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure). The information base gathered by enforcing the proposed approaches allows customers to better understand the characteristics of these complex network infrastructures. Moreover, experimental results are also useful to the provider for understanding the quality of service perceived by customers. By properly interpreting the obtained results, usage guidelines can be devised which allow to enhance the achievable performance and reduce costs. As a particular case study, the thesis also shows how monitoring information can be leveraged by the customer to implement convenient mechanisms to scale cloud resources without any a priori knowledge. More in general, we believe that this thesis provides a better-defined picture of the characteristics of the complex cloud network infrastructures, also providing the scientific community with useful tools for characterizing them in the future

From the Open Call submissions we accepted 16 papers as full papers (up to 12 pages) and 8 papers as short papers (up to 6 pages). All the accepted papers will be presented orally in the Workshop sessions. More precisely, the selected papers have been organized in 7 session: Channel access and scheduling, Energy-aware Protocols, QoS in Mobile Ad-Hoc networks, Multihop Performance Issues, Wireless Internet, Applications and finally Security Issues. The papers (and authors) come from all parts of the world, confirming the international stature of this Workshop. The majority of the contributions are from Europe (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, UK). However, a significant number is from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Korea and USA. The proceedings also include two invited papers. We take this opportunity to thank all the authors who submitted their papers to WONS 2006. You helped make this event again a success
