    Multimedia Traffic Engineering in Next Generation Networks

    Due to high speed Internet and Multimedia applications, future wireless communication are expected to support multimedia traffic such as voice, video and text with a variety of Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and make efficient use of radio resources. Such kind of traffic requires high level of QoS guarantees. Traffic management is a process of regulating the traffic over network. Since, multimedia traffic is more sensitive, therefore it requires special measures while transmission, especially in wireless networks. There are different queuing disciplines which are used to police the traffic, the Priority Queue and RIO (RED with In/Out) are queuing disciplines, PQ is used to prioritize the traffic, and the later is used to drop the lower priority packets at the time of congestion. Proposed solution is the integration of Priority Queue with RIO, which will serve as a classifier to prioritize the traffic and then it will also serve as a scheduler by dropping lower priority traffic when the congestion state occur. Simulation results show that by applying proposed Traffic Management Strategy (PriRIO), it assigns stable bandwidth to the Multimedia Traffic Flow and enhances its throughput. It also shows that Packet Losses for Multimedia Traffic are very minor, that is, equivalent to none. Further, delay values for Multimedia traffic also remain below the Best Effort traffic flows. Thus, on the basis of these simulation results and analysis, PriRIO outperforms significantly, as compare to other Traffic Management Strategies

    Quality of Service System Approximation in IP Networks

    This paper is sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Bulgaria in the framework of project No 105 “Multimedia Packet Switching Networks Planning with Quality of Service and Traffic Management”.This paper presents Quality of Service analyses in wired and wireless IP networks based on the three popular techniques – RSVP, IntServ, and DiffServ. The analyses are based on a quick approximation schema of the traffic system with static and dynamic changes of the system bounds. We offer a simulation approach where a typical leaky bucket model is ap- proximated with a G/D/1/k traffic system with flexible bounds in waiting time, loss and priority. The approach is applied for two cascaded leaky buckets. The derived traffic system is programmed in C++. The simula- tion model is flexible to the dynamic traffic changes and priorities. Student criterion is applied in the simulation program to prove results. The results of the simulation demonstrate the viability of the proposed solution and its applicability for fast system reconfiguration in dynamic environmental circumstances. The simulated services cover a typical range of types of traffic sources like VoIP, LAN emulation and transaction exchange

    Improving perceptual multimedia quality with an adaptable communication protocol

In this paper we argue that network parameters that define the network Quality of Service (QoS) must be driven by user-centric parameters such as user expectations and requirements for multimedia transmitted over a network. To this end a mechanism for mapping user-oriented parameters to network QoS parameters is outlined. The paper surveys existing methods for mapping user requirements to the network. An adaptable communication system is implemented to validate the mapping. The architecture adapts to varying network conditions caused by congestion so as to maintain user expectations and requirements. The paper also surveys research in the area of adaptable communications architectures and protocols. Our results show that such a user-biased approach to networking does bring tangible benefits to the user
