FavorQueue: A parameterless active queue management to improve TCP traffic performance
This paper presents and analyzes the implementation of a novel active queue management (AQM) named FavorQueue that aims to improve delay transfer of short lived TCP flows over best-effort networks. The idea is to dequeue packets that do not belong to a flow previously enqueued first. The rationale is to mitigate the delay induced by long-lived TCP flows over the pace of short TCP data requests and to prevent dropped packets at the beginning of a connection and during recovery period. Although the main target of this AQM is to accelerate short TCP traffic, we show that FavorQueue does not only improve the performance of short TCP traffic but also improves the performance of all TCP traffic in terms of drop ratio and latency whatever the flow size. In particular, we demonstrate that FavorQueue reduces the loss of a retransmitted packet, decreases the number of dropped packets recovered by RTO and improves the latency up to 30% compared to DropTail. Finally, we show that this scheme remains compliant with recent TCP updates such as the increase of the initial slow-start value
Implementation and Evaluation of Activity-Based Congestion Management Using P4 (P4-ABC)
Activity-Based Congestion management (ABC) is a novel domain-based QoS mechanism providing more fairness among customers on bottleneck links. It avoids per-flow or per-customer states in the core network and is suitable for application in future 5G networks. However, ABC cannot be configured on standard devices. P4 is a novel programmable data plane specification which allows defining new headers and forwarding behavior. In this work, we implement an ABC prototype using P4 and point out challenges experienced during implementation. Experimental validation of ABC using the P4-based prototype reveals the desired fairness results
Advances in Internet Quality of Service
We describe recent advances in theories and architecture that support performance guarantees needed for quality of service networks. We start with deterministic computations and give applications to integrated services, differentiated services, and playback delays. We review the methods used for obtaining a scalable integrated services support, based on the concept of a stateless core. New probabilistic results that can be used for a statistical dimensioning of differentiated services are explained; some are based on classical queuing theory, while others capitalize on the deterministic results. Then we discuss performance guarantees in a best effort context; we review: methods to provide some quality of service in a pure best effort environment; methods to provide some quality of service differentiation without access control, and methods that allow an application to control the performance it receives, in the absence of network support
Packet Transactions: High-level Programming for Line-Rate Switches
Many algorithms for congestion control, scheduling, network measurement,
active queue management, security, and load balancing require custom processing
of packets as they traverse the data plane of a network switch. To run at line
rate, these data-plane algorithms must be in hardware. With today's switch
hardware, algorithms cannot be changed, nor new algorithms installed, after a
switch has been built.
This paper shows how to program data-plane algorithms in a high-level
language and compile those programs into low-level microcode that can run on
emerging programmable line-rate switching chipsets. The key challenge is that
these algorithms create and modify algorithmic state. The key idea to achieve
line-rate programmability for stateful algorithms is the notion of a packet
transaction : a sequential code block that is atomic and isolated from other
such code blocks. We have developed this idea in Domino, a C-like imperative
language to express data-plane algorithms. We show with many examples that
Domino provides a convenient and natural way to express sophisticated
data-plane algorithms, and show that these algorithms can be run at line rate
with modest estimated die-area overhead.Comment: 16 page
A Survey on Data Plane Programming with P4: Fundamentals, Advances, and Applied Research
With traditional networking, users can configure control plane protocols to
match the specific network configuration, but without the ability to
fundamentally change the underlying algorithms. With SDN, the users may provide
their own control plane, that can control network devices through their data
plane APIs. Programmable data planes allow users to define their own data plane
algorithms for network devices including appropriate data plane APIs which may
be leveraged by user-defined SDN control. Thus, programmable data planes and
SDN offer great flexibility for network customization, be it for specialized,
commercial appliances, e.g., in 5G or data center networks, or for rapid
prototyping in industrial and academic research. Programming
protocol-independent packet processors (P4) has emerged as the currently most
widespread abstraction, programming language, and concept for data plane
programming. It is developed and standardized by an open community and it is
supported by various software and hardware platforms. In this paper, we survey
the literature from 2015 to 2020 on data plane programming with P4. Our survey
covers 497 references of which 367 are scientific publications. We organize our
work into two parts. In the first part, we give an overview of data plane
programming models, the programming language, architectures, compilers,
targets, and data plane APIs. We also consider research efforts to advance P4
technology. In the second part, we analyze a large body of literature
considering P4-based applied research. We categorize 241 research papers into
different application domains, summarize their contributions, and extract

When Latency Matters: Measurements and Lessons Learned
Several emerging classes of interactive applications are demanding for extremely low-latency to be fully unleashed, with edge computing generally regarded as a key enabler thanks to reduced delays. This paper presents the outcome of a large-scale end-to-end measurement campaign focusing on task-offloading scenarios, showing that moving the computation closer to the end-users, alone, may turn out not to be enough. Indeed, the complexity associated with modern networks, both at the access and in the core, the behavior of the protocols at different levels of the stack, as well as the orchestration platforms used in data-centers hide a set of pitfalls potentially reverting the benefits introduced by low propagation delays. In short, we highlight how ensuring good QoS to latency-sensitive applications is definitely a multi-dimensional problem, requiring to cope with a great deal of customization and cooperation to get the best from the underlying network
