    TOWARD AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE INFLUENCES OF MEANINGFUL FRAMING ON USER PARTICIPATION IN A GAMIFIED INFORMATION SYSTEM

    Gamification with meaningful framing is a diegetic gamification approach that goes beyond points, badges, and leaderboards. Diegesis – the notion of connecting elements of the game, including tasks, narratives and stories – can help to imbue even very work-centric games with fantasy and a meaning-ful framing. This study proposes to investigate the influences of such meaningful framing, including meaningful framing of the game and the meaningful framing of the task, on users’ participation in a gamified information system. We apply the S-O-R framework to construct interrelationships among a story-based game environment, user engagement, and player behaviors and propose a research model with hypotheses. We aim to uncover the role of story-based gamification in information systems re-search and encourage more research investigations in this direction

    Gamification of Information Systems: Ten Years of Research

    The paper reviews the ten years of research on Information Systems gamification, investigating the changes in the overall interest in the topic, checking its geographic spread, classifying the published research with regard to its character and scope, and analysing the feedback of research community it has caused. The obtained results are discussed in the context of the research agenda proposed in 2013, pointing to advances made and research directions which are still valid in 2022. The relevant publications were searched for in two large bibliographic databases (Scopus and Web of Science)

    Towards the Design of a Gamified Application to Increase Tuberculosis Treatment Adherence in Vietnam

    Despite being treatable, tuberculosis (TB) remains among the most common causes of death worldwide. One of the countries with the highest-burden from TB is Vietnam. A major factor responsible for the high mortality rate is nonadherence to medication and the subsequent outbreak of multidrug-resistant forms of TB, which are harder to treat and show a lower chance of survival. Existing measures to increase medication adherence focus on monitoring medication intake without considering the reasons for nonadherence – the stigmatization of TB patients. Addressing this problem, we design a concept for a patient-centered, gamified application aiming to reduce stigmatization and empower TB patients. Based on a literature review and interviews with experts from science and practice, including former TB patients, we elaborate on the functionalities and gamified elements of the application. Eventually, we present the design concept for the application based on Lui et al.’s framework for designing a gamified information system

    Is it all about having Fun? – Developing a Taxonomy to gamify Information Systems

    Gamification is a well-known approach that refers to the use of game design elements in information systems to make monotonous and tedious tasks more enjoyable. However, research and practice show that game design elements are oftentimes chosen and integrated in information systems randomly, therefore impeding the outcomes of such systems. In this regard, taxonomies can guide system developers, i.e., in selecting and combining game design elements to gamify their information system. Nonetheless, existing taxonomies do not provide such guidance for gamifying information systems. Therefore, the goal of our research is to consolidate the state of the art of gamification research and rigorously develop a gamification taxonomy. To achieve our goal, we conducted a systematic literature review and developed a taxonomy based on a rigorous taxonomy development process. We evaluate our theory by providing evidence of its feasibility with two practical cases: First, we show how the taxonomy helps to analyze existing gamification approaches, and, second, how the taxonomy guides to gamify information systems. Overall, we enrich theory by introducing a new taxonomy to better explain the meaning and characteristics of game design elements. Likewise, practitioners will be guided in selecting and combining game design elements for their gamification approaches

    Systematic Review of Gamification Research in IS Education: A Multi-method Approach

    Gamification refers to the use of game mechanics and game dynamics in non-gaming environments and contexts. Gamification is increasingly gaining attention among system designers across various industries especially in education due to the benefits associated with its implementation. The adoption of gamification in information systems (IS) education is promising for engaging and motivating students to complete their degree programs. Call for research in this area is particularly on the increase in the IS field. Accordingly, we need to organize the aggregation of research in this area and use common terminologies to promote progressive research practice in the field. In this paper, we use a multi-method approach to systematically review existing research on gamification in IS education to identify common terminologies, identify trends in topics studied, highlight understudied areas, and, thus, present opportunities for future research. The multi-method approach combines classical systematic review method and social network analysis to provide additional insight into the knowledge structure of researchers involved in the gamification of IS education. This review also highlights possible interventions that can improve student retention in IS education through the design of effective gamified courses
