Climate Justice and Women's Rights: A Guide to Supporting Grassroots Women's Action

This Guide emerged from a "Summit on Women and Climate" in Bali, Indonesia, and aims to increase timely and appropriate funding for worldwide climate action initiatives led by women and their communities. The Guide is not a comprehensive resource on climate change or women's rights. Instead, it addresses an urgent need within the funding community and offers concrete, practical guidance that: Orients grantmakers to the importance of funding at the intersection of climate justice and women's rights.Draws lessons from specific examples of funding for women's climate change initiatives.Provides guidance on how funders can collaborate to direct timely and appropriate funding to women and their communities.Advocates for bringing women's voices into climate change policy discussions.Highlights the strong impact that small (less than $10,000) to medium-sized ($10,000-$50,000) grants can make in women-organized efforts to address climate change at the community level, across geographic boundaries and in global climate policy. Grassroots women's climate activism is becoming increasingly critical to women's collective and individual rights, freedom and survival

Gender Equality Results Case Study - Bangladesh: Second Urban Primary Health Care Project

Development Aims and Impacts. The Urban Primary Health Care Project strengthened and expanded primary health care infrastructure and services with a focus on the urban poor. The project provided preventative and curative services, including access to immunization, reproductive health services, limited curative care, nutrition-related services, community outreach on health issues, and assistance for women survivors of violence. In project areas, there were significant improvements in key indicators, including under-5 mortality, maternal mortality, total fertility, child malnutrition, and control of sexually transmitted infections. ADB Processes and Management Tools. During the project design phase, a gender action plan (GAP) was developed. This plan provided analytical background and set out a series of initiatives to strengthen attention toward gender equality issues and improve access of women and girls to health services. In addition to the GAP, other approaches that contributed to the project’s gender equality performance were pro-poor targeting particularly women and children, public–private partnership health service delivery model, and creation of awareness among adolescent boys and girls. Specific indicators to track progress were included. The project increased access to health services (health facilities were constructed close to poor communities, with a target of providing 30% of services to identified low-income families), increased women’s access to health services (70% of beneficiaries were females), and contributed to improvements in maternal mortality ratio

Internet Governance : exploring the development link

This paper seeks to explore the issues of Internet governance from a development perspective. The WSIS process and the report of the UN Working group on Internet Governance provide an initial framework within which to develop the issues. These issues not only concern the equitable distribution of Internet resources and the ways in which a secure and reliable function of the Internet can be achieved, but also include issues of multi-lingualism and local content as well as the institutional setting of Internet governance mechanisms and participation. The paper observers that realising the contribution of the Internet to development goals requires a shift in policy focus away from supply side initiatives in the telecommunications sector to more co-ordinated approaches

Women, Peace and Security Advocacy Brief: Advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda in the Indo-Pacific

This report presents an overview of the evolution and impact of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). In acknowledging the unique experiences of women and girls in conflict, UNSCR 1325 emphasises the crucial role of women's participation at all stages of peace processes. Subsequent UNSC Resolutions have further entrenched the WPS agenda in international relations, aligning with discourses of human rights, human security, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UN member states are urged to develop National Action Plans (NAPs) to advance the WPS agenda and gender equity through gender mainstreaming. The report highlights NATO's efforts to embed the WPS agenda across its operations, and the adoption of the NATO/Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) Policy on Women, Peace and Security 2021–2025. Lessons from NATO's experience in implementing the WPS agenda are invaluable for Australia and other Indo-Pacific states. This advocacy brief summarizes discussions held at Western Sydney University on the 21st anniversary of UNSCR 1325 on 31 October 2022, analysing the progress of the WPS agenda through the lenses of various cross-cutting themes. It offers recommendations for Australian and regional policymakers to expand the WPS agenda in four key areas: sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), disability; education; and cybersecurity
