Growing Story Forest Online from Massive Breaking News
We describe our experience of implementing a news content organization system
at Tencent that discovers events from vast streams of breaking news and evolves
news story structures in an online fashion. Our real-world system has distinct
requirements in contrast to previous studies on topic detection and tracking
(TDT) and event timeline or graph generation, in that we 1) need to accurately
and quickly extract distinguishable events from massive streams of long text
documents that cover diverse topics and contain highly redundant information,
and 2) must develop the structures of event stories in an online manner,
without repeatedly restructuring previously formed stories, in order to
guarantee a consistent user viewing experience. In solving these challenges, we
propose Story Forest, a set of online schemes that automatically clusters
streaming documents into events, while connecting related events in growing
trees to tell evolving stories. We conducted extensive evaluation based on 60
GB of real-world Chinese news data, although our ideas are not
language-dependent and can easily be extended to other languages, through
detailed pilot user experience studies. The results demonstrate the superior
capability of Story Forest to accurately identify events and organize news text
into a logical structure that is appealing to human readers, compared to

Tracking Dengue Epidemics using Twitter Content Classification and Topic Modelling
Detecting and preventing outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue
and Zika in Brasil and other tropical regions has long been a priority for
governments in affected areas. Streaming social media content, such as Twitter,
is increasingly being used for health vigilance applications such as flu
detection. However, previous work has not addressed the complexity of drastic
seasonal changes on Twitter content across multiple epidemic outbreaks. In
order to address this gap, this paper contrasts two complementary approaches to
detecting Twitter content that is relevant for Dengue outbreak detection,
namely supervised classification and unsupervised clustering using topic
modelling. Each approach has benefits and shortcomings. Our classifier achieves
a prediction accuracy of about 80\% based on a small training set of about
1,000 instances, but the need for manual annotation makes it hard to track
seasonal changes in the nature of the epidemics, such as the emergence of new
types of virus in certain geographical locations. In contrast, LDA-based topic
modelling scales well, generating cohesive and well-separated clusters from
larger samples. While clusters can be easily re-generated following changes in
epidemics, however, this approach makes it hard to clearly segregate relevant

A rule dynamics approach to event detection in Twitter with its application to sports and politics
The increasing popularity of Twitter as social network tool for opinion expression as well as informa- tion retrieval has resulted in the need to derive computational means to detect and track relevant top- ics/events in the network. The application of topic detection and tracking methods to tweets enable users to extract newsworthy content from the vast and somehow chaotic Twitter stream. In this paper, we ap- ply our technique named Transaction-based Rule Change Mining to extract newsworthy hashtag keywords present in tweets from two different domains namely; sports (The English FA Cup 2012) and politics (US Presidential Elections 2012 and Super Tuesday 2012). Noting the peculiar nature of event dynamics in these two domains, we apply different time-windows and update rates to each of the datasets in order to study their impact on performance. The performance effectiveness results reveal that our approach is able to accurately detect and track newsworthy content. In addition, the results show that the adaptation of the time-window exhibits better performance especially on the sports dataset, which can be attributed to the usually shorter duration of football events
Unsupervised User Stance Detection on Twitter
We present a highly effective unsupervised framework for detecting the stance
of prolific Twitter users with respect to controversial topics. In particular,
we use dimensionality reduction to project users onto a low-dimensional space,
followed by clustering, which allows us to find core users that are
representative of the different stances. Our framework has three major
advantages over pre-existing methods, which are based on supervised or
semi-supervised classification. First, we do not require any prior labeling of
users: instead, we create clusters, which are much easier to label manually
afterwards, e.g., in a matter of seconds or minutes instead of hours. Second,
there is no need for domain- or topic-level knowledge either to specify the
relevant stances (labels) or to conduct the actual labeling. Third, our
framework is robust in the face of data skewness, e.g., when some users or some
stances have greater representation in the data. We experiment with different
combinations of user similarity features, dataset sizes, dimensionality
reduction methods, and clustering algorithms to ascertain the most effective
and most computationally efficient combinations across three different datasets
(in English and Turkish). We further verified our results on additional tweet
sets covering six different controversial topics. Our best combination in terms
of effectiveness and efficiency uses retweeted accounts as features, UMAP for
dimensionality reduction, and Mean Shift for clustering, and yields a small
number of high-quality user clusters, typically just 2--3, with more than 98\%
purity. The resulting user clusters can be used to train downstream
