Throughput analysis in an automated material handling system

    Get PDF
Throughput analysis in an automated material handling system, such as an Automated Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS), may be a complex problem. In the past, several approaches have been used for such an analysis. This paperpresents a combinatorial ap proach to evaluating the throughput performance of a mini-load system, with simulation as the primary method of investigation.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Optimization of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) Fleet Size With Incorporation of Battery Management

    Get PDF
An important aspect in manufacturing automation is material handling. To facilitate material handling, automated transport systems are implemented and employed. The AGV (automated guided vehicle) has become widely used for internal and external transport of materials. A critical aspect in the use of AGVs is determining the number of vehicles required for the system to meet the material handling requirements. Several models and simulations have been applied to determine the fleet size. Most of these models and simulations do not incorporate the battery usage of the vehicles and the effect it can have on the throughput and the number of AGVs required for the system. The goal of this research is to develop a simulation model to determine the optimized number of AGVs that is capable of increasing throughput while meeting the material handling requirements of the system. This model incorporates the battery management aspect and issues, which are usually omitted in AGV research. This includes the charging options and strategies, the number and location of charging stations, maintenance, and extended charging. The analysis entails studying various scenarios by applying different charging options and strategies and changing different parameters to achieve improved throughput and an optimized AGV fleet size. The results clearly show that battery management can have a significant effect on the average throughput and the AGV usage. It is important that the battery management of the AGVs is addressed adequately to run an AGV system efficiently

A Universal Framework for Lean Design and Control of Automated Material Handling Systems

    Get PDF
Lean design and control of an automated material handling system is investigated in this study. A universal framework for modeling and analysis of different types of material handling mechanisms is introduced to obtain a minimum number of resources in a system design and fulfill a desired throughput. This framework is developed in a discrete event simulation environment and applied to a case study based on a real pallet system technology. The minimal design of the pallet system is realized by devising the system universal model

Simulation based performance analysis of an end-of-Aisle automated storage and retrieval system

    Get PDF
This paper presents and discusses simulation of an End-of-Aisle automated storage and retrieval system, using FLEXSIM 6. The objective of the simulation model is to analyze and compare results of different control policies and physical designs. The performance measures considered for the evaluation of each control policy and layout combination are the total travel time of the crane and the number of storage and retrieval operations performed. The experiments set up and the corresponding results are discussed

Optimal Storage Rack Design for a 3-dimensional Compact AS/RS

    Get PDF
In this paper, we consider a newly-designed compact three-dimensional automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). The system consists of an automated crane taking care of movements in the horizontal and vertical direction. A gravity conveying mechanism takes care of the depth movement. Our research objective is to analyze the system performance and optimally dimension of the system. We estimate the craneñ€ℱs expected travel time for single-command cycles. From the expected travel time, we calculate the optimal ratio between three dimensions that minimizes the travel time for a random storage strategy. In addition, we derive an approximate closed-form travel time expression for dual command cycles. Finally, we illustrate the findings of the study by a practical example.AS/RS;Warehousing;Order Picking;Travel Time Model;Compact Storage Rack Design

A survey on performance analysis of warehouse carousel systems

    Get PDF
This paper gives an overview of recent research on the performance evaluation and design of carousel systems. We discuss picking strategies for problems involving one carousel, consider the throughput of the system for problems involving two carousels, give an overview of related problems in this area, and present an extensive literature review. Emphasis has been given on future research directions in this area

Design and Control of Warehouse Order Picking: a literature review

    Get PDF
Order picking has long been identified as the most labour-intensive and costly activity for almost every warehouse; the cost of order picking is estimated to be as much as 55% of the total warehouse operating expense. Any underperformance in order picking can lead to unsatisfactory service and high operational cost for its warehouse, and consequently for the whole supply chain. In order to operate efficiently, the orderpicking process needs to be robustly designed and optimally controlled. This paper gives a literature overview on typical decision problems in design and control of manual order-picking processes. We focus on optimal (internal) layout design, storage assignment methods, routing methods, order batching and zoning. The research in this area has grown rapidly recently. Still, combinations of the above areas have hardly been explored. Order-picking system developments in practice lead to promising new research directions.Order picking;Logistics;Warehouse Management

Evaluation of the ADVIA (R) Centaur (TM) TSH-3 assay

    Get PDF
An analytical evaluation of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH-3) assay on the Sayer ADVIA(R) Centaur(TM) immunoassay system was performed. General analytical requirements (linearity, resistance to typical interferences, absence of a carry-over effect) were fulfilled and reproducibility was satisfactory. Inter-assay coefficient of variation (CV) of a human serum pool with a concentration of 0.014 mU/l was 22.3%; at concentrations between 0.26 and 83 mU/l CV was below 6%. Method comparison study demonstrated close agreement of TSH results compared to those obtained with the Roche Elecsys(R) 2010 TSH assay (ADVIA Centaur = 1.08 x Elecsys - 0.18 mU/l; r = 0.987; n = 324). Handling and practicability of the ADVIA Centaur system proved to be convenient with a very high sample throughput. We conclude that the ADVIA Centaur TSH-3 assay meets requirements for clinical use

A Lindley-type equation arising from a carousel problem

    Get PDF
In this paper we consider a system with two carousels operated by one picker. The items to be picked are randomly located on the carousels and the pick times follow a phase-type distribution. The picker alternates between the two carousels, picking one item at a time. Important performance characteristics are the waiting time of the picker and the throughput of the two carousels. The waiting time of the picker satisfies an equation very similar to Lindley's equation for the waiting time in the PH/U/1 queue. Although the latter equation has no simple solution, we show that the one for the waiting time of the picker can be solved explicitly. Furthermore, it is well known that the mean waiting time in the PH/U/1 queue depends on to the complete interarrival time distribution, but numerical results show that, for the carousel system, the mean waiting time and throughput are rather insensitive to the pick-time distribution.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, 19 reference
