A Note On Zeroes Of Superpotentials In F-Theory
We discuss the dependence of superpotential terms in 4D F-theory on moduli
parameters. Two cases are studied: the dependence on world-filling 3-brane
positions and the dependence on 2-form VEVs. In the first case there is a zero
when the 3-brane hits the divisor responsible for the superpotential. In the
second case, which has been extensively discussed by Witten in 3D M-theory,
there is a zero for special values of 2-form VEVs when the M-theory divisor
contains non-trivial 3-cycles. We give an alternative derivation of this fact
for the special case of F-theory.Comment: 12pp Te
Spectrum of the SU(3) Dirac operator on the lattice: Transition from random matrix theory to chiral perturbation theory
We calculate complete spectra of the Kogut-Susskind Dirac operator on the
lattice in quenched SU(3) gauge theory for various values of coupling constant
and lattice size. From these spectra we compute the connected and disconnected
scalar susceptibilities and find agreement with chiral random matrix theory up
to a certain energy scale, the Thouless energy. The dependence of this scale on
the lattice volume is analyzed. In the case of the connected susceptibility
this dependence is anomalous, and we explain the reason for this. We present a
model of chiral perturbation theory that is capable of describing the data
beyond the Thouless energy and that has a common range of applicability with
chiral random matrix theory.Comment: 8 pages, RevTeX, 15 .eps figure
Pressure dependence of diffusion in simple glasses and supercooled liquids
Using molecular dynamics simulation, we have calculated the pressure
dependence of the diffusion constant in a binary Lennard-Jones Glass. We
observe four temperature regimes. The apparent activation volume drops from
high values in the hot liquid to a plateau value. Near the critical temperature
of the mode coupling theory it rises steeply, but in the glassy state we find
again small values, similar to the ones in the liquid. The peak of the
activation volume at the critical temperature is in agreement with the
prediction of mode coupling theory
Quark mass dependence of masses and decay constants of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons in QCD
The dependence of the pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants on sea
and valence quark masses is compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) Chiral
Perturbation Theory (ChPT). The numerical simulations with two light dynamical
quark flavors are performed with the Wilson-quark lattice action at gauge
coupling beta=5.1 and hopping parameters kappa=0.176, 0.1765, 0.177 on a 16^4
lattice. O(a) lattice artifacts are taken into account by applying chiral
perturbation theory for the Wilson lattice action. The values of the relevant
combinations of Gasser-Leutwyler constants L_4, L_5, L_6 and L_8 are estimated.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; discussion of the sea quark mass dependence

Diamagnetic response of cylindrical normal metal - superconductor proximity structures with low concentration of scattering centers
We have investigated the diamagnetic response of composite NS proximity
wires, consisting of a clean silver or copper coating, in good electrical
contact to a superconducting niobium or tantalum core. The samples show strong
induced diamagnetism in the normal layer, resulting in a nearly complete
Meissner screening at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the
linear diamagnetic susceptibility data is successfully described by the
quasiclassical Eilenberger theory including elastic scattering characterised by
a mean free path l. Using the mean free path as the only fit parameter we found
values of l in the range 0.1-1 of the normal metal layer thickness d_N, which
are in rough agreement with the ones obtained from residual resistivity
measurements. The fits are satisfactory over the whole temperature range
between 5 mK and 7 K for values of d_N varying between 1.6 my m and 30 my m.
Although a finite mean free path is necessary to correctly describe the
temperature dependence of the linear response diamagnetic susceptibility, the
measured breakdown fields in the nonlinear regime follow the temperature and
thickness dependence given by the clean limit theory. However, there is a
discrepancy in the absolute values. We argue that in order to reach
quantitative agreement one needs to take into account the mean free path from
the fits of the linear response. [PACS numbers: 74.50.+r, 74.80.-g]Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Strong Pinning in High Temperature Superconductors
Detailed measurements of the critical current density jc of YBa2Cu3O7 films
grown by pulsed laser deposition reveal the increase of jc as function of the
filmthickness. Both this thickness dependence and the field dependence of the
critical current are consistently described using a generalization of the
theory of strong pinning of Ovchinnikov and Ivlev [Phys. Rev. B 43, 8024
(1991)]. From the model, we deduce values of the defect density (10^21 m^-3)
and the elementary pinning force, which are in good agreement with the
generally accepted values for Y2O3-inclusions. In the absence of clear evidence
that the critical current is determined by linear defects or modulations of the
film thickness, our model provides an alternative explanation for the rather
universal field dependence of the critical current density found in YBa2Cu3O7
films deposited by different methods.Comment: 11 pages; 8 Figures; Published Phys. Rev. B 66, 024523 (2002
