Frequency-dependent AVO attribute: theory and example
Fluid-saturated rocks generally have seismic velocities that depend upon frequency. Exploring this property may help us discriminate different fluids from seismic data. In this paper, we introduce a scheme to calculate a frequency-dependent AVO attribute in order to estimate seismic dispersion from pre-stack data, and apply it to North Sea data. The scheme essentially combines the two-term approximation of Smith and Gidlow (1987) with the method of spectral decomposition based on the Wigner-Ville distribution, which is used to achieve high resolution. The result suggests the potential of this method for detection of seismic dispersion due to fluid saturation
Developing a labelled object-relational constraint database architecture for the projection operator
Current relational databases have been developed in order to improve the handling of
stored data, however, there are some types of information that have to be analysed for
which no suitable tools are available. These new types of data can be represented and treated
as constraints, allowing a set of data to be represented through equations, inequations
and Boolean combinations of both. To this end, constraint databases were defined and
some prototypes were developed. Since there are aspects that can be improved, we propose
a new architecture called labelled object-relational constraint database (LORCDB). This provides
more expressiveness, since the database is adapted in order to support more types of
data, instead of the data having to be adapted to the database. In this paper, the projection
operator of SQL is extended so that it works with linear and polynomial constraints and
variables of constraints. In order to optimize query evaluation efficiency, some strategies
and algorithms have been used to obtain an efficient query plan.
Most work on constraint databases uses spatiotemporal data as case studies. However,
this paper proposes model-based diagnosis since it is a highly potential research area,
and model-based diagnosis permits more complicated queries than spatiotemporal examples.
Our architecture permits the queries over constraints to be defined over different sets

On the decomposition of Generalized Additive Independence models
The GAI (Generalized Additive Independence) model proposed by Fishburn is a
generalization of the additive utility model, which need not satisfy mutual
preferential independence. Its great generality makes however its application
and study difficult. We consider a significant subclass of GAI models, namely
the discrete 2-additive GAI models, and provide for this class a decomposition
into nonnegative monotone terms. This decomposition allows a reduction from
exponential to quadratic complexity in any optimization problem involving
discrete 2-additive models, making them usable in practice
Structuring the decision process : an evaluation of methods in the structuring the decision process
This chapter examines the effectiveness of methods that are designed to provide structure and support to decision making. Those that are primarily aimed at individual decision makers are examined first and then attention is turned to groups. In each case weaknesses of unaided decision making are identified and how successful the application of formal methods is likely to be in mitigating these weaknesses is assessed
