    A phonological study on English loanwords in Mandarin Chinese

    The general opinion about the way English borrowings enter Mandarin is that English words are preferably integrated into Mandarin via calquing, which includes a special case called Phonetic-Semantic Matching (PSM) (Zuckermann 2004), meaning words being phonetically assimilated and semantically transferred at the same time. The reason for that is that Mandarin is written in Chinese characters, which each has a single-syllable pronunciation and a self-contained meaning, and the meaning achieved by the selection of characters may match the original English words. There are some cases which are agreed by many scholars to be PSM. However, as this study demonstrates, the semantics of the borrowing and the original word do not really match, the relation considered to be “artificial” by Novotná (1967). This study analyses a corpus of 600 established English loanwords in Mandarin to test the hypothesis that semantic matching is not a significant factor in the loanword adaptation process because there is no semantic relation between the borrowed words and the characters used to record them. To measure the phonological similarity between the English input and the Mandarin output, one of the models in adult second language perception, the Perceptual Assimilation Model (Best 1995a), is used as the framework to judge the phonemic matching between the English word and the adapted Mandarin outcome. The meanings of the characters used in recording the loanwords are referred in The Dictionary of Modern Chinese to see whether there are cases of semantic matching. The phonotactic adaptation of illicit sound sequences is also analysed in Optimality Theory (McCarthy 2002) to give an account of phonetic-phonological analysis of the adaptation process. Thus, the percentage of Phono-Semantic Matching is obtained in the corpus. As the corpus investigation shows, the loanwords that can match up both the phonological and the semantic quality of the original words are very few. The most commonly acknowledged phono-semantic matching cases are only phonetic loanwords. In conclusion, this paper argues that the semantic resource of Chinese writing system is not used as a major factor in the integration of loanwords. Borrowing between languages with different writing systems is not much different than borrowing between languages with same writing system or without a writing system. Though Chinese writing system interferes with the borrowing, it is the linguistic factors that determine the borrowing process and results. Chinese characters are, by a large proportion, conventional graphic signs with a phonetic value being the more significant factor in loanword integration process

    Bilingual perceptual benefits of experience with a heritage language

    Research on the linguistic knowledge of heritage speakers has been concerned primarily with the advantages conferred by heritage language experience in production, perception, and (re)learning of the heritage language. Meanwhile, second-language speech research has begun to investigate potential benefits of first-language transfer in second-language performance. Bridging these two bodies of work, the current study examined the perceptual benefits of heritage language experience for heritage speakers of Korean in both the heritage language (Korean) and the dominant language (American English). It was hypothesized that, due to their early bilingual experience and the different nature of unreleased stops in Korean and American English, heritage speakers of Korean would show not only native-like perception of Korean unreleased stops, but also better-than-native perception of American English unreleased stops.     This paper reports on pilot work on the expression of Information Structure in Vietnamese and argues that Focus in Vietnamese is exclusively expressed prosodically: there are no specific focus markers, and the language uses phonology to express intonational emphasis in similar ways to languages like English or German. The exploratory data indicates that (i) focus is prosodically expressed while word order remains constant, (ii) listeners show good recoverability of the intended focus structure, and (iii) that there is a trading relationship between several phonetic parameters (duration, f0, amplitude) involved to signal prosodic (acoustic) emphasis

    EVALUATION OF THE SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE THE SAME PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH AND MANDARIN CHINESE

    Difficulty communicating in noise is a common complaint for people with hearing loss. When communicating in noise, speakers increase the intensity level of their voice and alter the stress patterns of their speech not only to monitor their own voice but also to be heard by others. Speech that increases in intensity for the purpose of self-monitoring and being understood in noise is called Lombard speech. Few studies have assessed communication performance with Lombard speech in noise which closely reflects the real-life communication situation. In addition, the characteristics of Lombard speech may be different(among) languages with different characteristics and identifying features so the few results available for English listeners may not apply to listeners of other languages. This study evaluated the performance of English speaking and Mandarin Chinese speaking individuals listening to English and Mandarin Chinese speech in corresponding babble noise. Speech materials were the IEEE sentences in English and translated into Mandarin Chinese while controlling for phonological, grammatical, and contextual predictability. The sentences and 4-talker babble were recorded in a conversational manner and at a Lombard speech level produced while listening to 80 dB SPL of noise. The performance of 18 native English speakers and 18 native Mandarin Chinese speakers was evaluated. The SNR-50, the signal-to-noise level required to produce 50% performance, was the same for conversational and Lombard English indicating that there is not a particular benefit in producing Lombard speech to be understood. The reason to produce Lombard speech in English is to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in order to facilitate improved communication. The results for the Mandarin Chinese listeners revealed a benefit when producing Lombard speech with the SNR-50 for Mandarin Chinese significantly different between conversational and Lombard speech. In noisy situations where increasing vocal intensity is expected, , Mandarin Chinese listeners appear to benefit from features preserved or enhanced through Lombard speech that English listeners do not access
