    Outer limit of subdifferentials and calmness moduli in linear and nonlinear programming

    With a common background and motivation, the main contributions of this paper are developed in two different directions. Firstly, we are concerned with functions which are the maximum of a finite amount of continuously differentiable functions of n real variables, paying attention to the case of polyhedral functions. For these max-functions, we obtain some results about outer limits of subdifferentials, which are applied to derive an upper bound for the calmness modulus of nonlinear systems. When confined to the convex case, in addition, a lower bound on this modulus is also obtained. Secondly, by means of a KKT index set approach, we are also able to provide a point-based formula for the calmness modulus of the argmin mapping of linear programming problems without any uniqueness assumption on the optimal set. This formula still provides a lower bound in linear semi-infinite programming. Illustrative examples are given

    Chance Constrained Optimal Power Flow Using the Inner-Outer Approximation Approach

    In recent years, there has been a huge trend to penetrate renewable energy sources into energy networks. However, these sources introduce uncertain power generation depending on environmental conditions. Therefore, finding 'optimal' and 'feasible' operation strategies is still a big challenge for network operators and thus, an appropriate optimization approach is of utmost importance. In this paper, we formulate the optimal power flow (OPF) with uncertainties as a chance constrained optimization problem. Since uncertainties in the network are usually 'non-Gaussian' distributed random variables, the chance constraints cannot be directly converted to deterministic constraints. Therefore, in this paper we use the recently-developed approach of inner-outer approximation to approximately solve the chance constrained OPF. The effectiveness of the approach is shown using DC OPF incorporating uncertain non-Gaussian distributed wind power

    Tools for modelling support and construction of optimization applications

    We argue the case for an open systems approach towards modelling and application support. We discuss how the 'usability' and 'skills' analysis naturally leads to a viable strategy for integrating application construction with modelling tools and optimizers. The role of the implementation environment is also seen to be critical in that it is retained as a building block within the resulting system
