    On the Continuous CNN Problem

    In the (discrete) CNN problem, online requests appear as points in R2\mathbb{R}^2. Each request must be served before the next one is revealed. We have a server that can serve a request simply by aligning either its xx or yy coordinate with the request. The goal of the online algorithm is to minimize the total L1L_1 distance traveled by the server to serve all the requests. The best known competitive ratio for the discrete version is 879 (due to Sitters and Stougie). We study the continuous version, in which, the request can move continuously in R2\mathbb{R}^2 and the server must continuously serve the request. A simple adversarial argument shows that the lower bound on the competitive ratio of any online algorithm for the continuous CNN problem is 3. Our main contribution is an online algorithm with competitive ratio 3+236.4643+2 \sqrt{3} \approx 6.464. Our analysis is tight. The continuous version generalizes the discrete orthogonal CNN problem, in which every request must be xx or yy aligned with the previous request. Therefore, Our result improves upon the previous best competitive ratio of 9 (due to Iwama and Yonezawa)

    Generalised cellular neural networks (GCNNs) constructed using particle swarm optimisation for spatio-temporal evolutionary pattern identification

    Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is introduced to implement a new constructive learning algorithm for training generalized cellular neural networks (GCNNs) for the identification of spatio-temporal evolutionary (STE) systems. The basic idea of the new PSO-based learning algorithm is to successively approximate the desired signal by progressively pursuing relevant orthogonal projections. This new algorithm will thus be referred to as the orthogonal projection pursuit (OPP) algorithm, which is in mechanism similar to the conventional projection pursuit approach. A novel two-stage hybrid training scheme is proposed for constructing a parsimonious GCNN model. In the first stage, the orthogonal projection pursuit algorithm is applied to adaptively and successively augment the network, where adjustable parameters of the associated units are optimized using a particle swarm optimizer. The resultant network model produced at the first stage may be redundant. In the second stage, a forward orthogonal regression (FOR) algorithm, aided by mutual information estimation, is applied to re. ne and improve the initially trained network. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed method is validated by applying the new modeling framework to a spatio-temporal evolutionary system identification problem

    Deep Learning for Vanishing Point Detection Using an Inverse Gnomonic Projection

    We present a novel approach for vanishing point detection from uncalibrated monocular images. In contrast to state-of-the-art, we make no a priori assumptions about the observed scene. Our method is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) which does not use natural images, but a Gaussian sphere representation arising from an inverse gnomonic projection of lines detected in an image. This allows us to rely on synthetic data for training, eliminating the need for labelled images. Our method achieves competitive performance on three horizon estimation benchmark datasets. We further highlight some additional use cases for which our vanishing point detection algorithm can be used.Comment: Accepted for publication at German Conference on Pattern Recognition (GCPR) 2017.     DeepMarks: A Digital Fingerprinting Framework for Deep Neural Networks

    This paper proposes DeepMarks, a novel end-to-end framework for systematic fingerprinting in the context of Deep Learning (DL). Remarkable progress has been made in the area of deep learning. Sharing the trained DL models has become a trend that is ubiquitous in various fields ranging from biomedical diagnosis to stock prediction. As the availability and popularity of pre-trained models are increasing, it is critical to protect the Intellectual Property (IP) of the model owner. DeepMarks introduces the first fingerprinting methodology that enables the model owner to embed unique fingerprints within the parameters (weights) of her model and later identify undesired usages of her distributed models. The proposed framework embeds the fingerprints in the Probability Density Function (pdf) of trainable weights by leveraging the extra capacity available in contemporary DL models. DeepMarks is robust against fingerprints collusion as well as network transformation attacks, including model compression and model fine-tuning. Extensive proof-of-concept evaluations on MNIST and CIFAR10 datasets, as well as a wide variety of deep neural networks architectures such as Wide Residual Networks (WRNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), corroborate the effectiveness and robustness of DeepMarks framework

    Convolutional Neural Network on Three Orthogonal Planes for Dynamic Texture Classification

    Dynamic Textures (DTs) are sequences of images of moving scenes that exhibit certain stationarity properties in time such as smoke, vegetation and fire. The analysis of DT is important for recognition, segmentation, synthesis or retrieval for a range of applications including surveillance, medical imaging and remote sensing. Deep learning methods have shown impressive results and are now the new state of the art for a wide range of computer vision tasks including image and video recognition and segmentation. In particular, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently proven to be well suited for texture analysis with a design similar to a filter bank approach. In this paper, we develop a new approach to DT analysis based on a CNN method applied on three orthogonal planes x y , xt and y t . We train CNNs on spatial frames and temporal slices extracted from the DT sequences and combine their outputs to obtain a competitive DT classifier. Our results on a wide range of commonly used DT classification benchmark datasets prove the robustness of our approach. Significant improvement of the state of the art is shown on the larger datasets.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure
