This paper examines how personal, business, and environmental factors influence ethnic entrepreneurial success in the UAE, against the backdrop of the nation\u27s concerted efforts to promote entrepreneurship and foreign investments in SMEs, as the means to attaining its goals of sustainable, long term economic diversification, expansion, and enhanced performance. The study adopts a mixed methods approach to investigate the key determinants of ethnic entrepreneurial success by utilizing primary quantitative data collected via a survey of 103 entrepreneurs. In addition, qualitative data is obtained from in-depth interviews of ten expatriate entrepreneurs. Whereas the quantitative results evidenced a significant impact of one personal and two business factors on ethnic entrepreneurial success in the UAE, with the environmental factors being insignificant, the qualitative results confirmed the importance of personal and business variables in achieving success, especially the role of support from ethnic groups. Further, interviewees\u27 perceptions of the environmental factors\u27 role were mixed, supporting the qualitative findings regarding the insignificance of these factors. Our findings are timely and beneficial for policymakers promoting ethnic entrepreneurship in the UAE and potential entrepreneurs intending to establish businesses within it. Furthermore, no previous studies have been found in the research literature regarding the factors influencing ethnic entrepreneurial success in the UAE, ranked fourth globally in the Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI) 2020. Hence, this study\u27s results merit policymakers\u27 consideration regarding the adequacy and relevance of their efforts to promote startups and entrepreneurship

Drawing on BaumolĂs concepts of productive, unproductive and destructive entrepreneurship and relevant amendments, this thesis aims to contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by developing a conceptual framework which allows operationalising the concepts for empirical assessment. Furthermore, using data from longitudinal survey, author makes one of the first attempts to address the concepts empirically. The results provide with support for the conceptual framework highlighting the importance to shift the focus from firmsĂ activities to output on both, venture and societal levels, short and long term, when concepts are addressed empirically. Overall findings suggest that productive entrepreneurs are those who are less involved in behaviour such as tax avoidance or illegal business and show a higher level of entrepreneurial orientation.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/64372/1/wp917.pd

This is a quantitative-qualitative research. 339 entrepreneurs ahead of businesses with at least 5 years of existence in Sao Paulo, Brazil answered a survey with 27 validated questions about planning, strategy and entrepreneurship. Data was analyzed through factorial analysis. Results showed six factors named external environment, innovation, internal environment, experience, mission and impulsiveness. The qualitative part of the study brought a discussion about these factors. The relevance of the internal and external environments is shown by the important relationship and influence that these may exercise in the performance of the enterprise, including information about best practices of the market in the production of products/services in comparison to internal strengths and weaknesses. In contrast to environmental uncertainty and variations, that makes the planning effort extremely difficult for entrepreneurs. We suggest that their personal abilities can compensate the lack of planning, including their innovative ability together with accumulated experience. Thanks to these qualities, entrepreneurs are constantly honing their abilities to create and manage their businesses and, over time, achieving success. The factors rose on the analysis shows that the strategic planning initiatives of entrepreneurs balance both environmental facts and personal abilities. The theoretical approach of effectuation and causation explains how entrepreneurs deal with this balance when deciding to act impulsively or planned in certain conditions, representing the key contribution of this article.Este estudo examinou se os empreendedores se vĂȘem como planejadores estratĂ©gicos e procurou entender os fatoreschaveque contribuem no desenvolvimento de seus negĂłcios.
