    Several candidate Data Base Management Systems (DBM's) that could support the NASA End-to-End Data System's Integrated Data Base Management System (IDBMS) Project, later rescoped and renamed the Packet Management System (PMS) were evaluated. The candidate DBMS systems which had to run on the Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 computer system were ORACLE, SEED and RIM. Oracle and RIM are both based on the relational data base model while SEED employs a CODASYL network approach. A single data base application which managed stratospheric temperature profiles was studied. The primary reasons for using this application were an insufficient volume of available PMS-like data, a mandate to use actual rather than simulated data, and the abundance of available temperature profile data

    Performance issues in mid-sized relational database machines

    Relational database systems have provided end users and application programmers with an improved working environment over older hierarchial and networked database systems. End users now use interactive query languages to inspect and manage their data. And application programs are easier to write and maintain due to the separation of physical data storage information from the application program itself. These and other benefits do not come without a price however. System resource consumption has long been the perceived problem with relational systems. The additional resource demands usually force computing sites to upgrade existing systems or add additional facilities. One method of protecting the current investment in systems is to use specialized hardware designed specifically for relational database processing. \u27Database Machines\u27 provide that alternative. Since the commercial introduction of database machines in the early 1980\u27s, both software and hardware vendors of relational database systems have claimed superior performance over competing products. Without a STANDARD performance measurement technique, the database user community has been flooded with benchmarks and claims from vendors which are immediately discarded by some competitors as being biased towards a particular system design. This thesis discusses the issues of relational database performance measurement with an emphasis on database machines, however; these performance issues are applicable to both hardware and software systems. A discussion of hardware design, performance metrics, software and database design is included. Also provided are recommended guidelines to use in evaluating relational database systems in lieu of a standard benchmark methodology

    A rapid prototyping/artificial intelligence approach to space station-era information management and access

    Applications of rapid prototyping and Artificial Intelligence techniques to problems associated with Space Station-era information management systems are described. In particular, the work is centered on issues related to: (1) intelligent man-machine interfaces applied to scientific data user support, and (2) the requirement that intelligent information management systems (IIMS) be able to efficiently process metadata updates concerning types of data handled. The advanced IIMS represents functional capabilities driven almost entirely by the needs of potential users. Space Station-era scientific data projected to be generated is likely to be significantly greater than data currently processed and analyzed. Information about scientific data must be presented clearly, concisely, and with support features to allow users at all levels of expertise efficient and cost-effective data access. Additionally, mechanisms for allowing more efficient IIMS metadata update processes must be addressed. The work reported covers the following IIMS design aspects: IIMS data and metadata modeling, including the automatic updating of IIMS-contained metadata, IIMS user-system interface considerations, including significant problems associated with remote access, user profiles, and on-line tutorial capabilities, and development of an IIMS query and browse facility, including the capability to deal with spatial information. A working prototype has been developed and is being enhanced

    The “Rio+20” United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) focused on the "Green economy" as the main concept to fight poverty and achieve a sustainable way to feed the planet. For coastal countries, this concept translates into "Blue economy", the sustainable exploitation of marine environments to fulfill humanity needs for resources, energy, and food. This puts a stress on marine industries to better articulate their processes to gain and share knowledge of different marine habitats, and to reevaluate the data value chains established in the past and to support a data fueled market that is going only to in the near future.The EXPOSURES project is working in conjunction with the SUNRISE project to establish a new marine information ecosystem and demonstrate how the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) can be exploited for marine applications. In particular EXPOSURES engaged with the community of stakeholders in order to identify a new data value chain which includes IoT data providers, data analysts, and harbor authorities. Moreover we integrated the key technological assets that couple OGC standards for raster data management and manipulation and semantic technologies to better manage data assets.This paper presents the identified data value chain along with the use cases for validating it, and the system developed to semantically reconcile and manage such data collections

    The process of imaging, collecting and searching a cartridge case to identifying its suspected firearm is a time consuming procedure. Within this study, a cartridge case identification database management system in an Intranet environment is designed and implemented, thus enabling firearm examiners from different forensic laboratories to engage firearm identification without the constraints of time and location. Specifically, the study investigates appropriate database management system for image involved and Intranet secured ballistics firearm identification database. The results demonstrated that a computerized firearm identification system could be implemented in Intranet with a secure, scalable, performable Intranet database management system

    An extended relational data base management system for engineering design

    At present, the use of the relational model in the engineering design support domain is restricted due to the following: lack of ability to handle complex objects, no support for Abstract Data Types, inappropriate concurrency control for long transactions, no support for versioning and update propagation, poor efficiency, and insufficient design rule checking and consistency contraints enforcement. A simple relational database management system is designed and implemented under the UNIX operating system to incorporate two major extensions: support of user-defined Abstract Data Types and operators, and built-in Design Data Versioning. The design, implementation, and possible extensions to these new facilities are described

    Malaysia's tourism industry has seen a rapid growth rate for the past years, and played a significant role in the development of the country's economy. 2007 is a special year for Malaysian tourism since it is called the "Visit Malaysia" year in celebration of 50 years of Independence. Information Technology has made remarkable contributions to the growth of tourism industry in Malaysia. Its efforts to promote tourism range from websites providing information to systems to service tourists. However, while countries with well-developed tourism industry like France and Hong Kong have developed comprehensive tour assistant packages for tourists, Malaysia is yet to do so. Thus, a comprehensive mobile tour package is needed for Malaysia. The objective of the project is to develop a well-designed tour assistant running on PDAs which makes use of current trends in mobile applications such as the adoption of AI technique in scheduling. Due to time and resource constraints, the project focuses on areas within and around Kuala Lumpur and targets on short-stay and transit tourists. Going through a thorough literature review and following the waterfall methodology, the project has successfully developed a full package of mobile tour assistant including the back end and front end. The project also makes contribution to creatively applying Genetic Algorithm, an AI technique in plan auto-scheduling. The author hopes that the package will be of high commercial value and contribute significantly to boosting Malaysia's tourism
