    Get PDF
With the wide spread of the social media and online forums, individual users have been able to actively participate in the generation of online content in different languages and dialects. Arabic is one of the fastest growing languages used on Internet, but dialects (like Egyptian and Saudi Arabian) have a big share of the Arabic online content. There are many differences between Dialectal Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic which cause many challenges for Machine Translation of informal Arabic language. In this paper, we investigate the use of Automatic Error Correction method to improve the quality of Arabic User-Generated texts and its automatic translation. Our experiments show that the new system with automatic correction module outperforms the baseline system by nearly 22.59% of relative improvement

The COVID-19 outbreak arises problems in learning Arabic. Some instructors feel they spontaneously do not require the language environment (bi'ah lughawiyyah) in the teaching and learning process. This obviously has such a broad impact on the four language skills and one of the biggest challenges for them is that they could not teach Arabic speaking skills communicatively. This study aims to offer a considerable insight about the use of Zoom Cloud Meetings in improving Arabic speaking skills (mahārah kālam) during the pandemic. The study used qualitative descriptive methods and the data were collected through interviews and documentation. The data were analyzed using the theory of Miles and Huberman. Based on the review of results of interviews and documentation, Zoom Cloud Meeting is an effective way to improve students’ speech as it provides complete features so that communication between lecturers and students using Arabic can be established properly. To improve these skills, storytelling (taqdimul qisshah) and conversation (muhadatsah) are practiced. As a learning medium, Zoom certainly has advantages and disadvantages. The benefits of this media include having complete features, good access, large, flexible, and high capacity and supporting the teaching and learning process. While the drawbacks of using zoom application are the extra financial burden for internet quota, media restrictions, and having a strong internet connection. This paper investigates the reading practices of forty-five second year EFL Yemeni undergraduate students using the Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices. The Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices organizes reading practices into four key practices: code breaking, text participating, text uses and text analysing levels. Quantitative and qualitative methods, designed based on the Four Resources Model constructs, were used to collect data from a sample of students studying English as a Foreign Language at a university in Yemen. Quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire, while qualitative data was gathered using semi-structured interviews guided by the research objectives. The findings reveal that Yemeni students were medium users of the code breaker and text user practices whereas the meaning making and text analysis practices were reported to be used in low usage. On the whole, these early findings suggest that the reading practices and reading abilities of the Yemeni students are still limited even at the tertiary level and have not developed fully with regard to reading in English. This paper reports in detail, the use of the Four Resources Model as a tool to determine reading efficacy while examining the aforementioned findings. Discussion is put forward on the implications for teaching of reading and its approaches in a Yemeni context, especially in view of the students‟ reading needs at the tertiary level in Yemen

KACST Arabic Text Classification Project: Overview and Preliminary Results

    No full text
Electronically formatted Arabic free-texts can be found in abundance these days on the World Wide Web, often linked to commercial enterprises and/or government organizations. Vast tracts of knowledge and relations lie hidden within these texts, knowledge that can be exploited once the correct intelligent tools have been identified and applied. For example, text mining may help with text classification and categorization. Text classification aims to automatically assign text to a predefined category based on identifiable linguistic features. Such a process has different useful applications including, but not restricted to, E-Mail spam detection, web pages content filtering, and automatic message routing. In this paper an overview of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) Arabic Text Classification Project will be illustrated along with some preliminary results. This project will contribute to the better understanding and elaboration of Arabic text classification techniques

The Experience of Teaching Statistics to Non-Specialist Students in Saudi Universities: The Role of Technology and Language

    Get PDF
The importance of statistics is not limited to statisticians but also impacts on non-statisticians who have to use statistics. One important issue is how statistics is best taught to, and learned by, non-specialist students. The pervasive use of the English language causes additional challenges to learners whose first language is not English, especially when technological resources that use English language, such as statistics software packages, are an integral part of the course. This paper presents research into the current position in Saudi universities, where there has previously been a lack of research into this topic. Mixed methods research has been used: a questionnaire survey of 1,053 students and qualitative interviews with 16 teachers of statistics from all colleges within all six universities where statistics is taught to non-specialist students in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Region. This presentation will discuss differences between the experiences of learners taught in the Arabic and English languages
