The years between 1870 and 1914 witnessed profound shifts in the medical understanding of, social responses to, and cultural representations of syphilis and its sufferers. Prostitutes had traditionally been recognised as the primary carriers of disease and men their ‘unsuspecting victims.’ However, responsibility for the spread of syphilis into middle-class homes had been redistributed across the gender divide by the end of the century. This thesis charts the changing medical and social attitudes towards the conjugal and congenital transmission of syphilis during the fin-de-siècle and the effects of these changes upon the construction of middle-class male identity and gender relations

Active Analysis in the Beginning Acting Classroom

Often, the exercises in the acting classroom can feel at odds with the processes used in the rehearsal room. I believe Konstantin Stanislavsky’s rehearsal method of Active Analysis provides tools and perspectives for dealing with these challenges. At The S Word Symposium in November 2022, I outlined a process I developed for teaching beginning acting using principles of Active Analysis as a tool to bridge the gap between training and rehearsing. This article outlines the experiences and thought processes that went into creating this class structure and reviews the benefits for students. Applied in this way, Stanislavsky’s impulse to place embodied action before intellectual analysis yields valuable results in the classroom as well as the rehearsal hall

Locked in the Classroom: Teachers Coming Out to Students

In lieu of an abstract, below is the first paragraph of the paper. The use of the S word among students and teachers can become quite controversial. Sexuality is becoming a topic of open discussion, but also one of avoidance. The process of coming out about one\u27s homosexuality is a long and hard progression. This is largely due to people assuming that heterosexuality is the sexual identity of those around them. Due to the assumption of heterosexuality, homosexuals have a harder time coming out to others. This course becomes harder for teachers than for other homosexuals, as teachers are seen as role models for many students and colleagues. Opposing forces have argued that gay and lesbian teachers will recruit students to follow a homosexual lifestyle. Some fear that if homosexual issues are dealt with in school, more students will pursue this way of life. These negative feelings towards homosexual teachers can be expressed by parents, co-workers, and students alike

Dehornoy-like left orderings and isolated left orderings

We introduce a Dehornoy-like ordering of groups, which is a generalization of the Dehornoy ordering of the braid groups. Under a weak assumption which we call Property F, we show that Dehornoy-like orderings have properties similar to the Dehornoy ordering, and produce isolated left orderings. We also construct new examples of Dehornoy-like ordering and isolated orderings and study their more precise properties.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
