    Proposal For 6LoWPAN Wireless Network Protocol-Based Street-Light-As-A-Service (SLaaS) Framework To Power Campus Parking Services

    A novel IPv6 Over Low Power Wireless Personal Area Network (6LoWPAN) protocol-based Street-Light-As-A-Service (SLaaS) research framework for an integrated cloud-based smart university campus parking platform is being proposed. The Intelligent Connected Street Light infrastructure currently in existence at University Sains Malaysia (USM) is being redesigned. As part of overall parking proposal, approaching object image and video data are being acquired using a range of sensors, including the  passive infrared (PIR) and 3-D Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) motion sensors. To acquire and transmit vehicle instrumentation data, ELM327 Onboard Diagnostics 2 (OBD-II) Wi-Fi adapter is being used. For edge computing-based intelligent object detection model processing to synchronize license plate and facial recognition data with USM databases, Nvidia® Jetson Nano is being used. The framework is developed to effect multiple services, including to track and manage university vehicles, to detect and secure pedestrian movement, to trigger lighting commands based on approaching vehicle movement for on-demand parking illumination, to partition digital bounding box perimeter to predict potential vehicle collisions, to detect unregistered and excessive parking time to monitor unattended and illegal vehicles, to enable street-light-located parking-related kiosk services, and consolidate cloud-based human and vehicle data analytics into mobile form-factor dashboards. The proposed design will be evaluated and validated for end-to-end average data propagation rate, data integrity, object-to-human and object-to-vehicle synchronization success rate, electrical power consumption reduction and potential surface attack mitigation and avoidance throughout the network

    Compact base station antenna based on image theory for UWB/5G RTLS embraced smart parking of driverless cars

    The Internet of Thing (IoT) and fifth-generation mobile communication networks (5G) are leading towards a paradigm shift by proving seamless connectivity to a large number of devices. The applications of IoT in smart cities have further attracted local authorities to adopt technologies such as driverless cars, smart parking and smart waste management. This paper presents a compact base station antenna design with enhanced directivity/gain for ultra-wideband (UWB)/5G embraced real-time location systems (RTLS) based smart parking of driverless cars. The proposed base station antenna is based on image theory to achieve enhanced directivity and narrower beam width without using more array elements to keep smaller dimensions. Moreover, the base station antenna consists of an antipodal dipole printed on the opposite side of Rogers 4350 substrate, and a metal plate carefully designed and placed to produce a mirror image in order to achieve a high value of directivity in a specified direction. The advantage behind the antipodal dipole configuration is to avoid the use of extra balun for impedance matching. The half-power beamwidth of 110° is achieved along with 7 dB gain by placing a reflector plane at the distance of 0.25 λo from the proposed antipodal dipole antenna. Also, this antenna provides a bandwidth ranging from 6 to 7.25 GHz, which can be used for UWB or 5G based RTLS systems. Furthermore, the proposed compact antenna design will help to improve the localization accuracy of ultra-wideband RTLS systems for smart parking applications of autonomous cars

    Fully automated urban traffic system

    The replacement of the driver with an automatic system which could perform the functions of guiding and routing a vehicle with a human's capability of responding to changing traffic demands was discussed. The problem was divided into four technological areas; guidance, routing, computing, and communications. It was determined that the latter three areas being developed independent of any need for fully automated urban traffic. A guidance system that would meet system requirements was not being developed but was technically feasible

    Integrated Toolset for WSN Application Planning, Development, Commissioning and Maintenance: The WSN-DPCM ARTEMIS-JU Project

    In this article we present the main results obtained in the ARTEMIS-JU WSN-DPCM project between October 2011 and September 2015. The first objective of the project was the development of an integrated toolset for Wireless sensor networks (WSN) application planning, development, commissioning and maintenance, which aims to support application domain experts, with limited WSN expertise, to efficiently develop WSN applications from planning to lifetime maintenance. The toolset is made of three main tools: one for planning, one for application development and simulation (which can include hardware nodes), and one for network commissioning and lifetime maintenance. The tools are integrated in a single platform which promotes software reuse by automatically selecting suitable library components for application synthesis and the abstraction of the underlying architecture through the use of a middleware layer. The second objective of the project was to test the effectiveness of the toolset for the development of two case studies in different domains, one for detecting the occupancy state of parking lots and one for monitoring air concentration of harmful gasses near an industrial site

    Performance analysis and application development of hybrid WiMAX-WiFi IP video surveillance systems

    Traditional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) analogue cameras installed in buildings and other areas of security interest necessitates the use of cable lines. However, analogue systems are limited by distance; and storing analogue data requires huge space or bandwidth. Wired systems are also prone to vandalism, they cannot be installed in a hostile terrain and in heritage sites, where cabling would distort original design. Currently, there is a paradigm shift towards wireless solutions (WiMAX, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G) to complement and in some cases replace the wired system. A wireless solution of the Fourth-Generation Surveillance System (4GSS) has been proposed in this thesis. It is a hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance system. The performance analysis of the hybrid WiMAX-WiFi is compared with the conventional WiMAX surveillance models. The video surveillance models and the algorithm that exploit the advantages of both WiMAX and Wi-Fi for scenarios of fixed and mobile wireless cameras have been proposed, simulated and compared with the mathematical/analytical models. The hybrid WiMAX-WiFi video surveillance model has been extended to include a Wireless Mesh configuration on the Wi-Fi part, to improve the scalability and reliability. A performance analysis for hybrid WiMAX-WiFi system with an appropriate Mobility model has been considered for the case of mobile cameras. A security software application for mobile smartphones that sends surveillance images to either local or remote servers has been developed. The developed software has been tested, evaluated and deployed in low bandwidth Wi-Fi wireless network environments. WiMAX is a wireless metropolitan access network technology that provides broadband services to the connected customers. Major modules and units of WiMAX include the Customer Provided Equipment (CPE), the Access Service Network (ASN) which consist one or more Base Stations (BS) and the Connectivity Service Network (CSN). Various interfaces exist between each unit and module. WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 family of standards. Wi-Fi, on the other hand, is a wireless access network operating in the local area network; and it is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards

    A Novel Variable Geometry based Planar Inductor Design for Wireless Charging Application

    In this thesis, the performance, modelling and application of a planar electromagnetic coil are discussed. Due to the small size profiles and their non‐contact nature, planar coils are widely used due to their simple and basic design. The uncertain parameters have been identified and simulated using ANSYS that has been run utilising a newly developed MATLAB code. This code has made it possible to run thousands of trials without the need to manually input the various parameters for each run. This has facilitated the process of obtaining all the probable solutions within the defined range of properties. The optimum and robust design properties were then determined. The thesis discusses the experimentation and the finite element modelling (FEM) performed for developing the design of planar coils and used in wireless chargers. In addition, the thesis investigates the performance of various topologies of planar coils when they are used in wireless chargers. The ANSYS Maxwell FEM package has been used to analyse the models while varying the topologies of the coils. For this purpose, different models in FEM were constructed and then tested with topologies such as circular, square and hexagon coil configurations. The described methodology is considered as an effective way for obtaining maximum Power transfer efficiency (PTE) with a certain distance on planar coils with better performance. The explored designs studies are, namely: (1) Optimization of Planar Coil Using Multi-core, (2) planar coil with an Orthogonal Flux Guide, (3) Using the Variable Geometry in a Planar coil for an Optimised Performance by using the robust design method, (4) Design and Integration of Planar coil on wireless charger. In the first design study, the aim is to present the behaviour of a newly developed planar coil, built from a Mu-metal, via simulation. The structure consists of an excitation coil, sensing coils and three ferromagnetic cores 2 located on the top, middle and bottom sections of the coil in order to concentrate the field using the iterative optimisation technique. Magnetic materials have characteristics which allows them to influence the magnetic field in its environment. The second design study presents the optimal geometry and material selection for the planar with an Orthogonal Flux Guide. The study demonstrates the optimising of the materials and geometry of the coil that provides savings in terms of material usage as well as the employed electric current to produce an equivalent magnetic field. The third design study presents the variable geometry in a planar inductor to obtain the optimised performance. The study has provided the optimum and robust design parameters in terms of different topologies such as circular, square and hexagon coil configurations and then tested, Once the best topology is chosen based on performance. The originality of the work is evident through the randomisation of the parameters using the developed MATLAB code and the optimisation of the joint performance under defined conditions. Finally, the fourth design study presents the development of the planar coil applications.     Wireless Power Transfer Technology for Electric Vehicle Charging

    In the years 1884-1889, after Nicola Tesla invented "Tesla Coil", wireless power transfer (WPT) technology is in front of the world. WPT technologies can be categorized into three groups: inductive based WPT, magnetic resonate coupling (MRC) based WPT and electromagnetic radiation based WPT. MRC-WPT is advantageous with respect to its high safety and long transmission distance. Thus it plays an important role in the design of wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. The most significant drawback of all WPT systems is the low efficiency of the energy transferred. Most losses happen during the transfer from coil to coil. This thesis proposes a novel coil design and adaptive hardware to improve power transfer efficiency (PTE) in magnetic resonant coupling WPT and mitigate coil misalignment, a crucial roadblock to the acceptance of WPT for EV.     Challenges and Barriers of Wireless Charging Technologies for Electric Vehicles

    Electric vehicles could be a significant aid in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Even though extensive study has been done on the features and traits of electric vehicles and the nature of their charging infrastructure, network modeling for electric vehicle manufacturing has been limited and unchanging. The necessity of wireless electric vehicle charging, based on magnetic resonance coupling, drove the primary aims for this review work. Herein, we examined the basic theoretical framework for wireless power transmission systems for EV charging and performed a software-in-the-loop analysis, in addition to carrying out a performance analysis of an EV charging system based on magnetic resonance. This study also covered power pad designs and created workable remedies for the following issues: (i) how power pad positioning affected the function of wireless charging systems and (ii) how to develop strategies to keep power efficiency at its highest level. Moreover, safety features of wireless charging systems, owing to interruption from foreign objects and/or living objects, were analyzed, and solutions were proposed to ensure such systems would operate as safely and optimally as possible

    Aquesta tesi proposa una plataforma de detecció d’intrusions per a revelar atacs a les xarxes de sensors sense fils (WSN, per les sigles en anglès) de les ciutats intel·ligents (smart cities). La plataforma està dissenyada tenint en compte les necessitats dels administradors de la ciutat intel·ligent, els quals necessiten accés a una arquitectura centralitzada que pugui gestionar alarmes de seguretat en un sistema altament heterogeni i distribuït. En aquesta tesi s’identifiquen els diversos passos necessaris des de la recollida de dades fins a l’execució de les tècniques de detecció d’intrusions i s’avalua que el procés sigui escalable i capaç de gestionar dades típiques de ciutats intel·ligents. A més, es comparen diversos algorismes de detecció d’anomalies i s’observa que els mètodes de vectors de suport d’una mateixa classe (one-class support vector machines) resulten la tècnica multivariant més adequada per a descobrir atacs tenint en compte les necessitats d’aquest context. Finalment, es proposa un esquema per a ajudar els administradors a identificar els tipus d’atacs rebuts a partir de les alarmes disparades.Esta tesis propone una plataforma de detección de intrusiones para revelar ataques en las redes de sensores inalámbricas (WSN, por las siglas en inglés) de las ciudades inteligentes (smart cities). La plataforma está diseñada teniendo en cuenta la necesidad de los administradores de la ciudad inteligente, los cuales necesitan acceso a una arquitectura centralizada que pueda gestionar alarmas de seguridad en un sistema altamente heterogéneo y distribuido. En esta tesis se identifican los varios pasos necesarios desde la recolección de datos hasta la ejecución de las técnicas de detección de intrusiones y se evalúa que el proceso sea escalable y capaz de gestionar datos típicos de ciudades inteligentes. Además, se comparan varios algoritmos de detección de anomalías y se observa que las máquinas de vectores de soporte de una misma clase (one-class support vector machines) resultan la técnica multivariante más adecuada para descubrir ataques teniendo en cuenta las necesidades de este contexto. Finalmente, se propone un esquema para ayudar a los administradores a identificar los tipos de ataques recibidos a partir de las alarmas disparadas.This thesis proposes an intrusion detection platform which reveals attacks in smart city wireless sensor networks (WSN). The platform is designed taking into account the needs of smart city administrators, who need access to a centralized architecture that can manage security alarms in a highly heterogeneous and distributed system. In this thesis, we identify the various necessary steps from gathering WSN data to running the detection techniques and we evaluate whether the procedure is scalable and capable of handling typical smart city data. Moreover, we compare several anomaly detection algorithms and we observe that one-class support vector machines constitute the most suitable multivariate technique to reveal attacks, taking into account the requirements in this context. Finally, we propose a classification schema to assist administrators in identifying the types of attacks compromising their networks
