    Electron density retrieval from truncated Radio Occultation GNSS data

    This paper summarizes the definition and validation of two complementary new strategies, to invert incomplete Global Navigation Satellite System Radio-Occultation (RO) ionospheric measurements, such as the ones to be provided by the future EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation. It will provide RO measurements with impact parameter much below the Low Earth Orbiters' height (817 km): from 500 km down approximately. The first presented method to invert truncated RO data is denoted as Abel-VaryChap Hybrid modeling from topside Incomplete Global Navigation Satellite System RO data, based on simple First Principles, very precise, and well suited for postprocessing. And the second method is denoted as Simple Estimation of Electron density profiles from topside Incomplete RO data, is less precise, but yields very fast estimations, suitable for Near Real-Time determination. Both techniques will be described and assessed with a set of 546 representative COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 ROs, with relative errors of 7% and 11% for Abel-VaryChap Hybrid modeling from topside Incomplete Global Navigation Satellite System RO data and Simple Estimation of Electron density profiles from topside Incomplete RO data, respectively, with 20 min and 15 s, respectively, of computational time per occultation in our Intel I7 PC.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    The Network Real Time Kinematic (NRTK) positioning is nowadays a very common practice not only in academia but also in the professional world. To support the users several networks of Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORSs) were born. These networks offer real-time services for NRTK positioning, providing a centimetric positioning accuracy with an average distance of 25-35 kms between the reference stations. But what is the effective distance between reference stations that allows to achieve the precision required for real-time positioning, using both geodetic and GIS receivers? How the positional accuracy changes with increasing distances between CORS? Can a service of geostationary satellites, such as the European EGNOS, be an alternative to the network positioning for medium-low cost receivers?     The impact of new signals on precise marine navigation - initial results from an experiment in Harwich Harbour

    The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland (GLAs) are supporting a project at University College London (UCL) to study whether it is possible to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) future requirements for port and harbour approach using future GNSS constellations, as detailed in IMO resolution A.915. This paper presents the results of a trial focusing on the accuracy, integrity, availability and continuity of port navigation, port approach, and docking. Abstract The required accuracy for docking is 0.1 m (95\%), which currently necessitates the use of Real Time Kinematic (RTK) processing. We consider the single-epoch geometry-based approach, which is robust against loss of lock and will fully benefit from the additional satellites. The trial was held at the beginning of May 2008 and saw THV Alert navigate into Harwich Harbour while satellite observation data were recorded from the vessel and from shore-based reference stations. Additional data were obtained from nearby Ordnance Survey reference stations, and two total stations were used to track the vessel’s passage to provide a truth model. Several modernised GPS satellites were tracked. The data were processed under different scenarios, using software developed at UCL, and the positioning performance analysed. Abstract Providing integrity for single-epoch RTK is particularly difficult. The identification of phase observation outliers is not possible before the integer ambiguities are resolved, but an undetected outlier could prevent successful ambiguity resolution. However, it will not always be necessary to fix every ambiguity to achieve the required precision, particularly with a multi-GNSS constellation. This paper introduces a new algorithm for partial ambiguity resolution in the presence of measurement bias that has been developed and tested at UCL.  This algorithm results in an improved ambiguity resolution success rate at the expense of computation time

    The next generation of navigation and positioning systems must provide greater accuracy and reliability in a range of challenging environments to meet the needs of a variety of mission-critical applications. No single navigation technology is robust enough to meet these requirements on its own, so a multisensor solution is required. Known environmental features, such as signs, buildings, terrain height variation, and magnetic anomalies, may or may not be available for positioning. The system could be stationary, carried by a pedestrian, or on any type of land, sea, or air vehicle. Furthermore, for many applications, the environment and host behavior are subject to change. A multi-sensor solution is thus required. The expert knowledge problem is compounded by the fact that different modules in an integrated navigation system are often supplied by different organizations, who may be reluctant to share necessary design information if this is considered to be intellectual property that must be protected

    Integer Least-squares Theory for the GNSS Compass

    Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) carrier phase integer ambiguity resolution is the key to high-precision positioning and attitude determination. In this contribution, we develop new integer least-squares (ILS) theory for the GNSS compass model, together with efficient integer search strategies. It extends current unconstrained ILS theory to the nonlinearly constrained case, an extension that is particularly suited for precise attitude determination. As opposed to current practice, our method does proper justice to the a priori given information. The nonlinear baseline constraint is fully integrated into the ambiguity objective function, thereby receiving a proper weighting in its minimization and providing guidance for the integer search. Different search strategies are developed to compute exact and approximate solutions of the nonlinear constrained ILS problem. Their applicability depends on the strength of the GNSS model and on the length of the baseline. Two of the presented search strategies, a global and a local one, are based on the use of an ellipsoidal search space. This has the advantage that standard methods can be applied. The global ellipsoidal search strategy is applicable to GNSS models of sufficient strength, while the local ellipsoidal search strategy is applicable to models for which the baseline lengths are not too small. We also develop search strategies for the most challenging case, namely when the curvature of the non-ellipsoidal ambiguity search space needs to be taken into account. Two such strategies are presented, an approximate one and a rigorous, somewhat more complex, one. The approximate one is applicable when the fixed baseline variance matrix is close to diagonal. Both methods make use of a search and shrink strategy. The rigorous solution is efficiently obtained by means of a search and shrink strategy that uses non-quadratic, but easy-to-evaluate, bounding functions of the ambiguity objective function. The theory presented is generally valid and it is not restricted to any particular GNSS or combination of GNSSs. Its general applicability also applies to the measurement scenarios (e.g. single-epoch vs. multi-epoch, or single-frequency vs. multi-frequency). In particular it is applicable to the most challenging case of unaided, single frequency, single epoch GNSS attitude determination.
