    This paper starts from the assumption that any evaluation of educational software should focus on whether or not, and the extent to which, it maximizes learning. It is particularly concerned with the impact of software on the quality of learning. The paper reviews key texts in the literature on learning, including some which relate directly to software development, and suggests ways in which a range of learning theories can inform the process of software design. The paper sets out to make a contribution to both the design and the evaluation of educational software

    AbstractIn this paper, the course content of electronic measurement technology is introduced from subject perspective. Some problems existing in theory and practice teaching are analyzed in detail. According to the current situation of curriculum teaching in our university, innovation and exploration is carried out and some reform measures are put forward based on existing methods. Finally, the improvement on the forms and contents of course assessment is envisaged. Curriculum reformation combines classical measure theory with modern test technology properly as well as considers its theory and application, remarkable teaching effect is obtained then.     The Right Place at the Right Time: Creative Spaces in Libraries

    Purpose This essay explores the recent trend in libraries: that of the establishment of spaces specifically set aside for creative work. The rise of these dedicated creative spaces is owed to a confluence of factors that happen to be finding their expression together in recent years. This essay examines the history of these spaces and explores the factors that gave rise to them and will fuel them moving forward. Design/Methodology/Approach A viewpoint piece, this essay combines historical research and historical/comparative analyses to examine the ways by which libraries have supported creative work in the past and how they may continue to do so into the 21st century. Findings The key threads brought together include a societal recognition of the value of creativity and related skills and attributes; the philosophies, values, and missions of libraries in both their longstanding forms and in recent evolutions; the rise of participatory culture as a result of inexpensive technologies; improved means to build community and share results of efforts; and library experience and historical practice in matters related to creativity. The chapter concludes with advice for those interested in the establishment of such spaces, grounding those reflections in the author’s experiences in developing a new creative space at Virginia Commonwealth University. Originality/value While a number of pieces have been written that discuss the practicalities of developing certain kinds of creative spaces, very little has been written that situates these spaces in larger social and library professional contexts; this essay begins to fill that gap

    Introduction to pollution prevention concepts in freshman chemistry through simulations and hypermidia

    As citizens of the 20th century, a key issue we all are aware of is degradation of the environment. In the interest of teaching the environmental issues to freshmen engineers, this study develops a computer aided learning/teaching (CAL/T) tool. This CAL/T tool consists of Internet based multimedia courseware and intelligent simulations. The courseware assembles the fundamentals of chemistry associated with current environmental issues such as air pollution, stratospheric ozone layer depletion and environmentally sensitive or \u27clean\u27 manufacturing. The courseware targets early and comprehensive understanding of pollution prevention concepts with a focus on environmentally friendly manufacturing. The courseware includes: on-line text, audio-video education tools, video files of laboratory demonstrations, interactive computer software for environmental problem solving and laboratory simulation, on-line self assessment tests, information about faculty, and on-line evaluation tools to obtain students\u27 feed-back to enhance faculty teaching. To enable the widest possible dissemination this courseware can be accessed by academia, industry, and governmental research and educational institutions through the World Wide Web

Over the last century various new media technologies were introduced in education. Most of these failed to meet the high expectations. The paper reviews the rise and fall of various “revolutionary” learning media and analyses what went wrong. Three main driving factors are identified that influence the educational system: 1) educational practice, 2) educational research, and 3) educational technologies. The role and position of these factors is elaborated and critically reviewed. The paper concludes with identifying a number of relevant developments that substantiate a favourable future outlook of media for learning

    Evaluation of Teaching the IS-LM Model through a Simulation Program

    The IS-ML model is a basic tool used in the teaching of short-term macroeconomics. Teaching is essentially done through the use of graphs. However, the way these graphs are traditionally taught does not allow the learner to easily visualise changes in the curvers. The IS-LM simulation program overcomes difficulties encountered in understanding the curves used in the model beacuse, through it the students can visualise the changes in these curves when the model's parameter values are modified. The IS-LM simulation program is presented and the effectiveness of this application to a group of macroeconomics students at the University of Seville during the 2009/10 academic year is evaluated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of all students' scores and some complementary statistical test were applied, distinguishing between students who used the simulator and those who did not. The average score obtained by the former in a model comprehension test was significantly higher than than of the latte

    The focus of this paper is the history of technology use by people with learning disabilities in the UK in the late twentieth century and the impact that technology has had on lives of people with learning disabilities. A methodological framework, underpinned by the principles of inclusivity, transparency and reciprocity was employed to enable eight adults with learning disabilities to share their memories of using technologies, from childhood to the present day. Our analysis of these histories challenge notions of deficit, dependency and inequality that are traditionally asscoiated with people with learning disabilities
