Cache-Aided Coded Multicast for Correlated Sources
The combination of edge caching and coded multicasting is a promising
approach to improve the efficiency of content delivery over cache-aided
networks. The global caching gain resulting from content overlap distributed
across the network in current solutions is limited due to the increasingly
personalized nature of the content consumed by users. In this paper, the
cache-aided coded multicast problem is generalized to account for the
correlation among the network content by formulating a source compression
problem with distributed side information. A correlation-aware achievable
scheme is proposed and an upper bound on its performance is derived. It is
shown that considerable load reductions can be achieved, compared to state of
the art correlation-unaware schemes, when caching and delivery phases

While some network designers, through ATM for example, have considered revolutionary approaches to supporting multimedia, the same cannot be said for operating systems designers. On the virtualization and dynamic orchestration of satellite communication services
Key features of satellite communications such as wide-scale coverage, broadcast/multicast support and high availability, together with significant amounts of new satellite capacity coming online, anticipate new opportunities for satellite communications services as an integral part within upcoming 5G systems. To materialize these opportunities, satellite communications services have to be provisioned and operated in a more flexible, agile and cost-effective manner than done today.
In this context, this paper describes a solution for the virtualization and dynamic orchestration of satellite communication services that builds on the introduction of Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technologies within the satellite ground
segment systems. Along with the description of the main system
architecture traits, the flowchart of a general procedure for the
dynamic instantiation of virtualized satellite networks on top of a
SDN/NFV-enabled satellite ground segment system is provided.
The paper also presents experimental results for the dynamic customization of satellite network services through the implementation of a set of virtualized satellite network functions that can be orchestrated over general purpose open virtual platforms.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
CloudTree: A Library to Extend Cloud Services for Trees
In this work, we propose a library that enables on a cloud the creation and
management of tree data structures from a cloud client. As a proof of concept,
we implement a new cloud service CloudTree. With CloudTree, users are able to
organize big data into tree data structures of their choice that are physically
stored in a cloud. We use caching, prefetching, and aggregation techniques in
the design and implementation of CloudTree to enhance performance. We have
implemented the services of Binary Search Trees (BST) and Prefix Trees as
current members in CloudTree and have benchmarked their performance using the
Amazon Cloud. The idea and techniques in the design and implementation of a BST
and prefix tree is generic and thus can also be used for other types of trees
such as B-tree, and other link-based data structures such as linked lists and
graphs. Preliminary experimental results show that CloudTree is useful and
efficient for various big data applications
Clockwise: a mixed-media file system
This paper presents Clockwise, a mixed-media file system. The primary goal of Clockwise is to provide a storage architecture that supports the storage and retrieval of best-effort and real-time file system data. Clockwise provides an abstraction called a dynamic partition that groups lists of related (large) blocks on one or more disks. Dynamic partitions can grow and shrink in size and reading or writing of dynamic partitions can be scheduled explicitly. GIS in the cloud: implementing a web map service on Google App Engine
Many producers of geographic information are now disseminating their data using open web service protocols, notably those published by the Open Geospatial Consortium. There are many challenges inherent in running robust and reliable services at reasonable cost. Cloud computing provides a new kind of scalable infrastructure that could address many of these challenges. In this study we implement a Web Map Service for raster imagery within the Google App Engine environment. We discuss the challenges of developing GIS applications within this framework and the performance characteristics of the implementation. Results show that the application scales well to multiple simultaneous users and performance will be adequate for
many applications, although concerns remain over issues such as latency spikes. We discuss the feasibility of implementing services within the free usage quotas of Google App Engine and the possibility of extending the approaches in this paper to other GIS applications
