Trusting M-Payments – Realising the Potential of Smart Phones for M-Commerce: A Conceptual Model & Survey of Consumers in Ireland
Consumer adoption of Smart Phones is growing internationally at a phenomenal rate. Smart Phones integrate functionality that previously required numerous technological artifacts. Smart Phones present significant M-Commerce opportunities for all organisations, but such potential has yet to be realised. If such potential is to be realised, the ability of consumers to utilise a Smart Phone to engage with transactional push and pull Smart Mobile Media Services (SMMS), and to make M-Payments for products/services using these devices in an easy, safe, and reliable manner, must be addressed. In response, this paper contributes a conceptual model, tested using an online survey, to explain Irish consumers’ willingness to use Smart Phones to make M-Payments for products and services. The empirical findings of the developed PLS model illustrate that the ramifications of this study for the deployment of the two Smart Mobile Media Services (SMMS) models; the push model, and the pull model, are significantly different
Relieving the Wireless Infrastructure: When Opportunistic Networks Meet Guaranteed Delays
Major wireless operators are nowadays facing network capacity issues in
striving to meet the growing demands of mobile users. At the same time,
3G-enabled devices increasingly benefit from ad hoc radio connectivity (e.g.,
Wi-Fi). In this context of hybrid connectivity, we propose Push-and-track, a
content dissemination framework that harnesses ad hoc communication
opportunities to minimize the load on the wireless infrastructure while
guaranteeing tight delivery delays. It achieves this through a control loop
that collects user-sent acknowledgements to determine if new copies need to be
reinjected into the network through the 3G interface. Push-and-Track includes
multiple strategies to determine how many copies of the content should be
injected, when, and to whom. The short delay-tolerance of common content, such
as news or road traffic updates, make them suitable for such a system. Based on
a realistic large-scale vehicular dataset from the city of Bologna composed of
more than 10,000 vehicles, we demonstrate that Push-and-Track consistently
meets its delivery objectives while reducing the use of the 3G network by over

Development of a compact, IoT-enabled electronic nose for breath analysis
In this paper, we report on an in-house developed electronic nose (E-nose) for use with breath analysis. The unit consists of an array of 10 micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) metal oxide (MOX) gas sensors produced by seven manufacturers. Breath sampling of end-tidal breath is achieved using a heated sample tube, capable of monitoring sampling-related parameters, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), humidity, and temperature. A simple mobile app was developed to receive real-time data from the device, using Wi-Fi communication. The system has been tested using chemical standards and exhaled breath samples from healthy volunteers, before and after taking a peppermint capsule. Results from chemical testing indicate that we can separate chemical standards (acetone, isopropanol and 1-propanol) and different concentrations of isobutylene. The analysis of exhaled breath samples demonstrate that we can distinguish between pre- and post-consumption of peppermint capsules; area under the curve (AUC): 0.81, sensitivity: 0.83 (0.59–0.96), specificity: 0.72 (0.47–0.90), p-value: <0.001. The functionality of the developed device has been demonstrated with the testing of chemical standards and a simplified breath study using peppermint capsules. It is our intention to deploy this system in a UK hospital in an upcoming breath research study
Mining User-generated Content of Mobile Patient Portal: Dimensions of User Experience
Patient portals are positioned as a central component of patient engagement through the potential to change the physician-patient relationship and enable chronic disease self-management. The incorporation of patient portals provides the promise to deliver excellent quality, at optimized costs, while improving the health of the population. This study extends the existing literature by extracting dimensions related to the Mobile Patient Portal Use. We use a topic modeling approach to systematically analyze users’ feedback from the actual use of a common mobile patient portal, Epic\u27s MyChart. Comparing results of Latent Dirichlet Allocation analysis with those of human analysis validated the extracted topics. Practically, the results provide insights into adopting mobile patient portals, revealing opportunities for improvement and to enhance the design of current basic portals. Theoretically, the findings inform the social-technical systems and Task-Technology Fit theories in the healthcare field and emphasize important healthcare structural and social aspects. Further, findings inform the humanization of healthcare framework, support the results of existing studies, and introduce new important design dimensions (i.e., aspects) that influence patient satisfaction and adherence to patient portal
