A number of factors have been implicated with this increase, but it is generally accepted that the main influences relate to the more widespread provision of new medical practices, such as immunosuppressive therapy and use of broad spectrum antibiotics, and invasive surgical procedures such as solid organ or bone marrow transplantation. Infections may either be superficial, affecting the skin, hair, nails and mucosal membranes, or systemic, involving major body organs (95). The risk of systemic infection appears to be enhanced in cases where the individual is already colonized by Candida (71). With regard to superficial mucosal infections, the continued spread of HIV infection (29) and the more extensive use of inhaled steroids (36) have also played significant roles

    Can foundational economy save regions in crisis?

    We perform, to our best knowledge, the first systematic mapping of the foundational economy (FE) at the sub-national level by looking at the FE employment in Swedish regions between 2007 and 2016. We show that the FE itself not only suffered less than traded activities from employment decline during the Great Recession of 2007–2009 but was also a domain of substantial job creation in the post-crisis recovery. At the same time, regions with higher dependence on foundational employment were hit harder during the crisis in terms of overall labour market performance. We demonstrate that it is specific compositions of foundational and traded activities in the regional employment mix that relate differently to regional employment growth in times of crisis and recovery.     Brood parasitism is linked to egg pattern diversity within and among species of australian passerines

    Bird eggs show striking diversity in color and pattern. One explanation for this is that interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts drive egg phenotype evolution. Brood parasites lay their eggs in the nests of other species, their hosts. Many hosts defend their nests against parasitism by rejecting foreign eggs, which selects for parasite eggs that mimic those of the host. In theory, this may in turn select for changes in host egg phenotypes over time to facilitate discrimination of parasite eggs. Here, we test for the first time whether parasitism by brood parasites has led to increased divergence in egg phenotype among host species. Using Australian host and nonhost species and objective measures of egg color and pattern, we show that (i) hosts of brood parasites have higher within-species variation in egg pattern than nonhosts, supporting previous findings in other systems, and (ii) host species have diverged more in their egg patterns than nonhost species after controlling for divergence time. Overall, our results suggest that brood parasitism has played a significant role in the evolution of egg diversity and that these effects are evident, not only within species, but also among species

    AI Governance and the Policymaking Process: Key Considerations for Reducing AI Risk

    This essay argues that a new subfield of AI governance should be explored that examines the policy-making process and its implications for AI governance. A growing number of researchers have begun working on the question of how to mitigate the catastrophic risks of transformative artificial intelligence, including what policies states should adopt. However, this essay identifies a preceding, meta-level problem of how the space of possible policies is affected by the politics and administrative mechanisms of how those policies are created and implemented. This creates a new set of key considerations for the field of AI governance and should influence the action of future policymakers. This essay examines some of the theories of the policymaking process, how they compare to current work in AI governance, and their implications for the field at large and ends by identifying areas of future research

    Testing the effectiveness of the Forest Integrity Assessment: a field-based tool for estimating the condition of tropical forest

Global targets to halt biodiversity losses and mitigate climate change will require protecting rainforest beyond current protected area networks, necessitating responsible forest stewardship from a diverse range of companies, communities and private individuals. Robust assessments of forest condition are critical for successful forest management, but many existing techniques are highly technical, time-consuming, expensive, or require specialist knowledge. 2. To make assessment of tropical forests accessible to a wide range of actors, many of whom may be limited by resources or expertise, the High Conservation Value Resource Network (HCVRN), with the SE Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP), developed a South East Asian version of the Forest Integrity Assessment (FIA) tool as a rapid (< 1 hour) method of assessing forest condition in the field, where non-experts respond to 50 questions about characteristics of the local environment while walking a site transect. Here, we examined the effectiveness of this survey tool by conducting ~ 1,000 assessments of forest condition at 16 tropical rainforest sites with varying levels of disturbance in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. 3. We found good agreement (R-squared range: 0.50 – 0.78) between FIA survey scores and independent measures of forest condition, including biodiversity, vegetation structure, aboveground carbon, and other key metrics of ecosystem function, indicating that the tool performed well. Although there was variation among assessor responses when surveying the same forest sites, assessors were consistent in their ranking of those sites, and prior forest knowledge had a minimal effect on the FIA scores. Revisions or further training for questions where assessors disagree, for example on the presence of fauna at a site, could improve consistency. 4. We conclude that the FIA survey tool is a robust method of assessing forest condition, providing a rapid and accessible means of forest conservation assessment. The FIA tool could be incorporated into management practices in a wide range of forest conservation schemes, from sustainability standards, to community forestry and restoration initiatives. The tool will enable more organisations and individuals to understand the conservation value of the forests they manage, and to identify areas for targeted improvements

    Neural Text Simplification of Clinical Letters with a Domain Specific Phrase Table

    Clinical letters are infamously impenetrable for the lay patient. This work uses neural text simplification methods to automatically improve the understandability of clinical let- ters for patients. We take existing neural text simplification software and augment it with a new phrase table that links complex medi- cal terminology to simpler vocabulary by min- ing SNOMED-CT. In an evaluation task us- ing crowdsourcing, we show that the results of our new system are ranked easier to under- stand (average rank 1.93) than using the origi- nal system (2.34) without our phrase table. We also show improvement against baselines in- cluding the original text (2.79) and using the phrase table without the neural text simplifica- tion software (2.94). Our methods can easily be transferred outside of the clinical domain by using domain-appropriate resources to pro- vide effective neural text simplification for any domain without the need for costly annotation
