    NASA SBIR abstracts of 1991 phase 1 projects

    The objectives of 301 projects placed under contract by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are described. These projects were selected competitively from among proposals submitted to NASA in response to the 1991 SBIR Program Solicitation. The basic document consists of edited, non-proprietary abstracts of the winning proposals submitted by small businesses. The abstracts are presented under the 15 technical topics within which Phase 1 proposals were solicited. Each project was assigned a sequential identifying number from 001 to 301, in order of its appearance in the body of the report. Appendixes to provide additional information about the SBIR program and permit cross-reference of the 1991 Phase 1 projects by company name, location by state, principal investigator, NASA Field Center responsible for management of each project, and NASA contract number are included

    A Numerical and Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Cutting Fluid on Machining Performance

    Cutting fluids play an important role in improving machining performance. However, cutting fluids have adverse effects on health and environment. A new methodology has been proposed for the prediction of tool temperature and the experimentally validated methodology revealed that turning operations can be performed with reduced amount of cutting fluid. Followed by, experiments were conducted and the results demonstrated that the reduce amount of cutting fluid is sufficient to obtain acceptable machining performance

    The purpose of this catalog is to assist small business firms in making the community aware of products emerging from their efforts in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. It contains descriptions of some products that have advanced into Phase 3 and others that are identified as prospective products. Both lists of products in this catalog are based on information supplied by NASA SBIR contractors in responding to an invitation to be represented in this document. Generally, all products suggested by the small firms were included in order to meet the goals of information exchange for SBIR results. Of the 444 SBIR contractors NASA queried, 137 provided information on 219 products. The catalog presents the product information in the technology areas listed in the table of contents. Within each area, the products are listed in alphabetical order by product name and are given identifying numbers. Also included is an alphabetical listing of the companies that have products described. This listing cross-references the product list and provides information on the business activity of each firm. In addition, there are three indexes: one a list of firms by states, one that lists the products according to NASA Centers that managed the SBIR projects, and one that lists the products by the relevant Technical Topics utilized in NASA's annual program solicitation under which each SBIR project was selected

    CFD Modelling of Hot-Machining Operation is a machining method conducted on conventional machine tools in which work piece is preheated before cutting operation to become softer and thereby to reduce its shear strength. Here in Final Year B.Tech Project work this work is assigned to me for understanding the Hot-Machining prospects. In our Work the job to be machined is of High Manganese- Steel. As we know the machining of these materials has always been a great challenge. Machining of these alloys and materials requires cutting tool of high strength, which is sometimes not economical and sometimes even impracticable. And also Non-Conventional processes are generally restricted to productivity point of view. The benefits of easier manufacturer of the components of excessive hard materials can be substantial in terms of reduced machined costs and lead time compared to traditional one involving heat treatment, grinding and manual finishing/polishing. So for a qualitative and productive process, the growing interest for Hot Machining Process is being developed in industry

    Coupled Simulation of Transient Heat Flow and Electric Currents in Thin Wires: Application to Bond Wires in Microelectronic Chip Packaging

    This work addresses the simulation of heat flow and electric currents in thin wires. An important application is the use of bond wires in microelectronic chip packaging. The heat distribution is modeled by an electrothermal coupled problem, which poses numerical challenges due to the presence of different geometric scales. The necessity of very fine grids is relaxed by solving and embedding a 1D sub-problem along the wire into the surrounding 3D geometry. The arising singularities are described using de Rham currents. It is shown that the problem is related to fluid flow in porous 3D media with 1D fractures [C. D'Angelo, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis 50.1, pp. 194-215, 2012]. A careful formulation of the 1D-3D coupling condition is essential to obtain a stable scheme that yields a physical solution. Elliptic model problems are used to investigate the numerical errors and the corresponding convergence rates. Additionally, the transient electrothermal simulation of a simplified microelectronic chip package as used in industrial applications is presented.Comment: all numerical results can be reproduced by the Matlab code openly available at https://github.com/tc88/ETwireSi
