    A Task-Centered Visualization Design Environment and a Method for Measuring the Complexity of Visualization Designs

    Recent years have seen a growing interest in the emerging area of computer security visualization which is about developing visualization methods to help solve computer security problems. In this thesis, we will first present a method for measuring the complexity of information visualization designs. The complexity is measured in terms of visual integration, number of separable dimensions for each visual unit, the complexity of interpreting the visual attributes, number of visual units, and the efficiency of visual search. This method is designed to better assist fellow developers to quickly evaluate multiple design choices, potentially enables computer to automatically measure the complexity of visualization data. We will also analyze the design space of network security visualization. Our main contribution is a new taxonomy that consists of three dimensions – data, visualizations, and tasks. Each dimension is further divided into hierarchical layers, and for each layer we have identified key parameters for making major design choices. This new taxonomy provides a comprehensive framework that can guide network security visualization developers to systematically explore the design space and make informed design decisions. It can also help developers or users systematically evaluate existing network security visualization techniques and systems. Finally it helps developers identify gaps in the design space and create new techniques. Taxonomy showed that most of the existing computer security visualization programs are data centered. However, some studies have shown that task centered visualization is perhaps more effective. To test this hypothesis, we propose a task centered visualization design framework, in which tasks are explicitly identified and organized and visualizations are constructed for specific tasks and their related data parameters. The center piece of this framework is a task tree which dynamically links the raw data with automatically generated visualization. The task tree serves as a high level interaction technique that allows users to conduct problem solving naturally at the task level, while still giving end users flexible control over the visualization construction. This work is currently being extended by building a prototype visualization system based on a Task-centered Visualization Design Architecture

    A Scientific Visualization Approach to Effective Website Design

    In this paper we offer an approach of website design based on Scientific Visualization. Websites may be conceptualized as information architectures that have been designed for a specific set of task(s). We aim to develop effective information representation through the technique of visualization in order to reduce cognitive load in performing such tasks. We approach this formalism by considering the specific task of online product purchase. We model tasks as a sequence of logical operators and discuss a way in which perceptual operators may substitute these logical operators. A replacement of logical operators with perceptual operators results in minimization of cognitive effort in information processing. Embedding these perceptual operators within the website enhances the website task performance. The important implication of this research is an alternative task oriented perspective of website design based on minimizing the cognitive effort in website tasks

    How does the design of landmarks on a mobile map influence wayfinding experts’ spatial learning during a real-world navigation task?

    Humans increasingly rely on GPS-enabled mobile maps to navigate novel environments. However, this reliance can negatively affect spatial learning, which can be detrimental even for expert navigators such as search and rescue personnel. Landmark visualization has been shown to improve spatial learning in general populations by facilitating object identification between the map and the environment. How landmark visualization supports expert users’ spatial learning during map-assisted navigation is still an open research question. We thus conducted a real-world study with wayfinding experts in an unknown residential neighborhood. We aimed to assess how two different landmark visualization styles (abstract 2D vs. realistic 3D buildings) would affect experts’ spatial learning in a map-assisted navigation task during an emergency scenario. Using a between-subjects design, we asked Swiss military personnel to follow a given route using a mobile map, and to identify five task-relevant landmarks along the route. We recorded experts’ gaze behavior while navigating and examined their spatial learning after the navigation task. We found that experts’ spatial learning improved when they focused their visual attention on the environment, but the direction of attention between the map and the environment was not affected by the landmark visualization style. Further, there was no difference in spatial learning between the 2D and 3D groups. Contrary to previous research with general populations, this study suggests that the landmark visualization style does not enhance expert navigators’ navigation or spatial learning abilities, thus highlighting the need for population-specific mobile map design solutions

    Performance visualization for parallel programs: task-based, object-oriented approach

    Developing and analyzing the performance of concurrent programs on distributed memory concurrent systems is normally a challenging task. Recently, performance visualization gains its importance as a critical tool for programmers. Programmers can have an insight into the development of parallel programs through a performance visualization. Most of the visualization tool to date have been developed for ad-hoc environments in hardware and software, and therefore its lifetime is limited. Since, however, new architectures keep emerging and application domains for distributed memory concurrent computer systems keep growing, the visualization tool should be flexible enough to accommodate unknown future demands of users (eg. new performance perspectives, application-specific views and disparate trace record formats);The Concurrent Object-Oriented ParaGraph (COOPG) is a prototype, general-purpose performance visualization package developed using an object-oriented approach. An object-oriented approach, both in design and implementation, provides a mechanism to build a simple, flexible, effective, and extensible performance visualization tool. The salient features of the COOPG include its flexible adaptability to disparate trace record formats and the incremental extensibility for incorporating user\u27s special-purpose views

    Parallel Hierarchies: Interactive Visualization of Multidimensional Hierarchical Aggregates

    Exploring multi-dimensional hierarchical data is a long-standing problem present in a wide range of fields such as bioinformatics, software systems, social sciences and business intelligence. While each hierarchical dimension within these data structures can be explored in isolation, critical information lies in the relationships between dimensions. Existing approaches can either simultaneously visualize multiple non-hierarchical dimensions, or only one or two hierarchical dimensions. Yet, the challenge of visualizing multi-dimensional hierarchical data remains open. To address this problem, we developed a novel data visualization approach -- Parallel Hierarchies -- that we demonstrate on a real-life SAP SE product called SAP Product Lifecycle Costing. The starting point of the research is a thorough customer-driven requirement engineering phase including an iterative design process. To avoid restricting ourselves to a domain-specific solution, we abstract the data and tasks gathered from users, and demonstrate the approach generality by applying Parallel Hierarchies to datasets from bioinformatics and social sciences. Moreover, we report on a qualitative user study conducted in an industrial scenario with 15 experts from 9 different companies. As a result of this co-innovation experience, several SAP customers requested a product feature out of our solution. Moreover, Parallel Hierarchies integration as a standard diagram type into SAP Analytics Cloud platform is in progress. This thesis further introduces different uncertainty representation methods applicable to Parallel Hierarchies and in general to flow diagrams. We also present a visual comparison taxonomy for time-series of hierarchically structured data with one or multiple dimensions. Moreover, we propose several visual solutions for comparing hierarchies employing flow diagrams. Finally, after presenting two application examples of Parallel Hierarchies on industrial datasets, we detail two validation methods to examine the effectiveness of the visualization solution.     Is Embodied Interaction Beneficial? A Study on Navigating Network Visualizations

    Network visualizations are commonly used to analyze relationships in various contexts. To efficiently explore a network visualization, the user needs to quickly navigate to different parts of the network and analyze local details. Recent advancements in display and interaction technologies inspire new visions for improved visualization and interaction design. Past research into network design has identified some key benefits to visualizing networks in 3D versus 2D. However, little work has been done to study the impact of varying levels of embodied interaction on network analysis. We present a controlled user study that compared four environments featuring conditions and hardware that leveraged different amounts of embodiment and visual perception ranging from a 2D visualization desktop environment with a standard mouse to a 3D visualization virtual reality environment. We measured the accuracy, speed, perceived workload, and preferences of 20 participants as they completed three network analytic tasks, each of which required unique navigation and substantial effort. For the task that required participants to iterate over the entire visualization rather than focus on a specific area, we found that participants were more accurate using a VR and a trackball mouse than conventional desktop settings. From a workload perspective, VR was generally considered the least mentally demanding and least frustrating in two of our three tasks. It was also preferred and ranked as the most effective and visually appealing condition overall. However, using VR to compare two side-by-side networks was difficult, and it was similar to or slower than other conditions in two of the three tasks. Overall, the accuracy and workload advantages of conditions with greater embodiment in specific tasks suggest promising opportunities to create more effective environments in which to analyze network visualizations.Comment: Accepted by the Information Visualization journa
