Molecular response of Deinococcus radiodurans to simulated microgravity explored by proteometabolomic approach
Regarding future space exploration missions and long-term exposure experiments, a detailed
investigation of all factors present in the outer space environment and their effects on organisms of
all life kingdoms is advantageous. Influenced by the multiple factors of outer space, the extremophilic
bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans has been long-termly exposed outside the international Space
Station in frames of the tanpopo orbital mission. the study presented here aims to elucidate molecular
key components in D. radiodurans, which are responsible for recognition and adaptation to simulated
microgravity. D. radiodurans cultures were grown for two days on plates in a fast-rotating 2-D clinostat
to minimize sedimentation, thus simulating reduced gravity conditions. Subsequently, metabolites
and proteins were extracted and measured with mass spectrometry-based techniques. our results
emphasize the importance of certain signal transducer proteins, which showed higher abundances
in cells grown under reduced gravity. these proteins activate a cellular signal cascade, which leads to
differences in gene expressions. Proteins involved in stress response, repair mechanisms and proteins
connected to the extracellular milieu and the cell envelope showed an increased abundance under
simulated microgravity. focusing on the expression of these proteins might present a strategy of cells
to adapt to microgravity conditions
Creative Improvisation in Disaster Responses : Practice in areas aff ected by the Kumamoto earthquakes
In the face of disasters, organizations and groups collaborate continuously and fluidly, coordinating with one another in order to overcome extraordinary challenges. When researchers explored this phenomenon in-depth, they employed the concept of āimprovisation.ā However, there is a dearth of research in the area of ācreative improvisationā relating to civic agencies that do not have special plans or approaches to disaster response. This study, therefor, aims at identifying some of the most eff ective improvisational approaches taken by civic agencies in the fi eld of communication where information, consciousness, and ideas converge. This paper classifi es cases of creative improvisation observed during the April 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes into two types and considers the respective conditions of improvisation. These are: 1) āPlace-makingā: by raising several cases representing āplace to convergenceā scattered throughout the region, the improvisational condition that can be summarized as, "Awareness of gathering to support the aff ected key places" is highlighted. 2) āForming a commonalityā: through participant observation at the "informal talk" held by local civil agencies, the interaction between agencies in the sense-making process is highlighted, thus clarifying the improvisational approaches of, "the process of realizing the role while being encouraged to participate initially," and "ingenuity to induce new movement by co-editing opposite opinions"
This study examines the associationism of Japanese women living in Spain who are members of the Tanpopo-no-kai/Sociedad Tanpopo, and their intercultural experiences through their written personal narratives. This associationism has resulted in attempts to create a social network and space for intercultural communication at a national level between Hispanic-Japanese families and Japanese residents in Spain. The research is based on numerical data and narrative data, however Japanese narratives from the quarterly association bulletins provide the main source of information. By using the narrative analysis method in the form of questions we have been able to study the writings in order to explore issues such as: their transcultural experiences, their processes of adapting to life in Spain, the evolution of their identity, their interpretation of the social reality around them and the passing on of their social and cultural heritage to their children, among others. The study of the Tanpopo association has demonstrated a close-knit and relaxed transcultural and female space for intraethnic communication. It reveals a joint strategy of emotional and instrumental support to overcome the isolation, the loss of social networks and the geographical separation from their own cultural region, resulting from the immigration through marriage of Japanese women living in Spain.U radu se istražuje udruživanje japanskih žena koje žive u Å panjolskoj i Älanice su DruÅ”tva Tanpopo (Tanpopo-no-kai/Sociedad Tanpopo) te njihova interkulturna iskustva kroz osobne pisane priÄe.
