Grouping complex systems: a weighted network comparative analysis

    Get PDF
In this study, the authors compare two inter-municipal commuting networks (MCN) pertaining to the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily, by approaching their characterization through a weighted network analysis. They develop on the results obtained for the MCN of Sardinia (De Montis et al. 2007) and attempt to use network analysis as a mean of detection of similarities or dissimilarities between the systems at hand

Comparative analysis of domestic water heating thermosiphon systems tested according to the Standard ISO 9459-2

    Get PDF
Permiso concedido para subir el documentoThe Standard ISO 9459-2 is a standard for the characterization of thermal performance of domestic water heating systems without auxiliary heating. In this study, 18 domestic water heating thermosiphon systems have been tested according to this international standard. The objective of the paper is to carry out a comparative analysis of the results obtained in these systems as a function of their volume and type of heat exchanger (tubular and double jacket). A comparative analysis of systems performance will be carried out by calculating the performance without thermal loss (a1/A) and solar fraction fSOL in different reference locations for different volume/area ratios. Also, a comparative analysis of systems performance and solar fraction will be carried out at different locations between a tubular heat exchanger tank and a double jacket heat exchanger tank. The different values obtained will be compared for the storage tank’s heat loss coefficient (Us). It will determinate the useful energy (energy with temperature above 45ºC) for the degree of mixing in the storage tank during a draw-off test

Concluding Chapter: Globalisation and Innovation Policy

    Get PDF
The concluding chapter of the “Small Country Innovation Systems” book develops a comparative analysis that deals with only a very few of the many issues addressed empirically by the ten country case studies. The concluding chapter focuses to some extent on issues related to globalization, but devotes most of its attention to innovation policy. The chapter is intended as a contribution to the comparative analysis of NSIs, conceived in the spirit of ‘appreciative theorizing’.Globalization; Innovation Policy; comparative analysis

Comparative Analysis of Two Cryogenic Force Balance Calibration Systems

    Get PDF
Cryogenic wind-tunnel facilities face unique challenges in the calibration and operation of various measurement systems and instrumentation. Instruments that are subjected to the cryogenic conditions of the test plenum require careful design and calibration procedures to maintain instrument performance. NASAs National Transonic Facility (NTF) and the European Transonic Windtunnel (ETW) are two cryogenic wind-tunnel facilities, each with the ability to calibrate force measurement systems (FMS) at cryogenic conditions. These facilities have different methodologies and processes for calibrating these systems. This paper discusses differences in the methodologies and processes and compares the results of two separate cryogenic calibrations of the NTF-118A force balance that were completed at both wind-tunnel facilities

Comparative Analysis of Plagiarism Detection Systems

This article compares plagiarism detection systems according to the list of criteria, compiled from the most challenging and important features for users in Ukrainian higher educational institutions. In addition it describes types of text-based plagiarism and provides an overview of the most common and serious forms of plagiarism around the world and in Ukraine in particular. The authors carried out a comparative analysis of three plagiarism detection systems − Turnitin, Unicheck, eTXT − and highlighted advantages and disadvantages of each one for the use in Ukraine. However, in further studies there might be a need for revising and expanding the list of criteria depending on the subject and the aim of using plagiarism checkers

Sustainable energy transition: properties and constraints of regenerative energy systems with respect to spatial planning and design

    Get PDF
Before transforming the built environment, one must understand the characteristic of regenerative systems. The aim of this study was is to compare fossil-fuel energy systems with regenerative systems. It explores key properties and constraints of regenerative energy systems with respect to spatial organization and design of the built environment. The findings of this comparative analysis are illustrated with the help of a regional case-study in South Limburg, the Netherlands

Resilience and electricity systems: a comparative analysis

    Get PDF
Electricity systems have generally evolved based on the natural resources available locally. Few metrics exist to compare the security of electricity supply of different countries despite the increasing likelihood of potential shocks to the power system like energy price increases and carbon price regulation. This paper seeks to calculate a robust measure of national power system resilience by analysing each step in the process of transformation from raw energy to consumed electricity. Countries with sizeable deposits of mineral resources are used for comparison because of the need for electricity-intensive metals processing. We find that shifts in electricity-intensive industry can be predicted based on countries’ power system resilience.Electricity; resilience; energy security

A comparative analysis of fault detection schemes for stochastic continuous-time dynamical systems

    Get PDF
This paper addresses a comparative analysis of the existing schemes for fault detection in continuous-time stochastic dynamical systems. Such schemes prove to be efficient when dealing with specific types of fault functions; on the other hand, they show very different performance sensitivity when dealing with new fault profiles and system noise. The study suggests the use of a combined scheme, supervised by a high level decision rule set
