The Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies (IISTPS) at San José State University (SJSU) conducted this project to review the continuing development of the Internet and the Information Superhighway. Emphasis was placed on an examination of the impact on commuting and working patterns in California, and an analysis of how public transportation agencies, including Caltrans, might take advantage of the new communications technologies. The document reviews the technology underlying the current Internet “structure” and examines anticipated developments. It is important to note that much of the research for this limited-scope project was conducted during 1995, and the topic is so rapidly evolving that some information is almost automatically “dated.” The report also examines how transportation agencies are basically similar in structure and function to other business entities, and how they can continue to utilize the emerging technologies to improve internal and external communications. As part of a detailed discussion of specific transportation agency functions, it is noted that the concept of a “Roundtable Forum,” growing out of developments in Concurrent Engineering, can provide an opportunity for representatives from multiple jurisdictions to utilize the Internet for more coordinated decision-making. The report also included an extensive analysis of demographic trends in California in recent years, such as commute and recreational activities, and identifies how the emerging technologies may impact future changes

Unattended network operations technology assessment study. Technical support for defining advanced satellite systems concepts

The results are summarized of an unattended network operations technology assessment study for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). The scope of the work included: (1) identified possible enhancements due to the proposed Mars communications network; (2) identified network operations on Mars; (3) performed a technology assessment of possible supporting technologies based on current and future approaches to network operations; and (4) developed a plan for the testing and development of these technologies. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) addition of a third Mars Relay Satellite (MRS) and MRS cross link capabilities will enhance the network's fault tolerance capabilities through improved connectivity; (2) network functions can be divided into the six basic ISO network functional groups; (3) distributed artificial intelligence technologies will augment more traditional network management technologies to form the technological infrastructure of a virtually unattended network; and (4) a great effort is required to bring the current network technology levels for manned space communications up to the level needed for an automated fault tolerance Mars communications network

The following study will analyze the concept of VoIP in a business environment.  It will examine the technical aspects associated with VoIP installations and the organizational structure which best facilitates the process.  Furthermore, it will discuss the quantitative and non-quantitative methodologies applicable to the cost and profitability of VoIP in the business environment.  Lastly, the paper will focus on recent regulation topics surrounding the new technology and provide examples of current applications

An Overview and Examination of the Indian Services Sector

India’s service sector has grown rapidly since the 1990s. Domestic demand for services has increased as incomes have risen, triggering the expansion of industries such as banking, education, and telecommunications. Exports have also increased rapidly, led by information technology and business process outsourcing (IT-BPO). India’s ability to offer low-cost, high-quality IT-BPO services has made it a world leader in this industry. However, employment in services has not grown as quickly as output. The majority of India’s jobseekers are low-skilled, but demand for workers is growing fastest in higher-skill industries. The supply of highly-skilled workers has not kept pace with demand, causing wages to increase faster for these workers than for lower-skilled ones. India’s government has supported the growth of service industries through a mix of deregulation, liberalization, and incentive programs, such as the Software Technology Parks of India. Nevertheless, burdensome regulations, poor infrastructure, and foreign investment restrictions continue to affect service firms’ ability to do business. USITC analysis suggests that additional liberalization would lead to an increase in India’s imports of services

This master’s thesis is about time distribution that supports substation applications needed for power transmission. The work was done for the Telecommunication department of Finland’s power transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj. This thesis answers to the following question: What is the need for accurate and synchronized time in power substations and how it will be delivered? Fingrid’s telecommunication network supports the power transmission grid and its operation. Telecommunication network can distribute time to power substations for the applications that need synchronized and accurate time. Current telecommunication equipment used in Fingrid is getting old and new techniques are planned to be implemented. When Fingrid is acquiring new communication equipment, they need to set requirements on the capability to distribute time. This thesis is an initial effort to investigate time distribution requirements for Fingrid’s needs. This thesis aids Fingrid Telecommunication department to define requirements for time distribution. For this thesis, I met with multiple Fingrid professionals, telecommunication device suppliers and time distribution researchers. This thesis answers to its research questions by means of a literature review and interviews.Tämä diplomityö käsittelee ajansiirron vaikutusta sähköasemasovellusten toimintaan. Työ tehtiin Suomen kantaverkkoyhtiö Fingrid Oyj:n tietoliikenneyksikölle. Fingridin tietoliikenneverkko on osa kantaverkkoa ja mahdollistaa sähköjärjestelmän toiminteita. Tietoliikenneverkon yksi palvelu on synkronoidun ajan siirtäminen sähköasemille.
