The iCrawl Wizard -- Supporting Interactive Focused Crawl Specification
Collections of Web documents about specific topics are needed for many areas
of current research. Focused crawling enables the creation of such collections
on demand. Current focused crawlers require the user to manually specify
starting points for the crawl (seed URLs). These are also used to describe the
expected topic of the collection. The choice of seed URLs influences the
quality of the resulting collection and requires a lot of expertise. In this
demonstration we present the iCrawl Wizard, a tool that assists users in
defining focused crawls efficiently and semi-automatically. Our tool uses major
search engines and Social Media APIs as well as information extraction
techniques to find seed URLs and a semantic description of the crawl intent.
Using the iCrawl Wizard even non-expert users can create semantic
specifications for focused crawlers interactively and efficiently.Comment: Published in the Proceedings of the European Conference on

Repurposing of disused shale gas wells for subsurface heat storage: preliminary analysis concerning UK issues
Development of many wells is envisaged in the UK in coming decades to exploit the abundant shale gas resource as fuel and petrochemical feedstock. Forward planning is therefore warranted regarding reuse of the resulting subsurface infrastructure after gas production has ceased. It is shown that this infrastructure might be repurposed for borehole thermal energy storage (BTES). Preliminary calculations, assuming an idealized cycle of summer heat storage and winter heat extraction, indeed demonstrate annual storage of c. 6ā
TJ or c. 2ā
GWh of energy per BTES well. Summed over the anticipated well inventory, a significant proportion of the UK's future heat demand might thus be supplied. This form of BTES technology has particular relevance to the UK, where the shale resource is located in relatively densely populated areas; it is especially significant for Scotland, where the resource coincides with a particularly high proportion of the population and heat demand

Large Scale Deployment of Renewables for Electricity Generation
Comparisons of resource assessments suggest resource constraints are not an obstacle to the large-scale deployment of renewable energy technologies. Economic analysis identifies barriers to the adoption of renewable energy sources resulting from market structure, competition in an uneven playing field and various non-market place barriers. However, even if these barriers are removed, the problem of ātechnology lock-outā remains. The key policy response is strategic deployment coupled with increased R&D support to accelerate the pace of improvement through market experience. The paper suggests significant contributions from various technologies, but does not assess their optimal or maximal market share
