Traffic and task allocation in networks and the cloud
Communication services such as telephony, broadband and TV are increasingly migrating into Internet Protocol(IP) based networks because of the consolidation of telephone and data networks. Meanwhile, the increasingly wide application of Cloud Computing enables the accommodation of tens of thousands of applications from the general public or enterprise users which make use of Cloud services on-demand through IP networks such as the Internet. Real-Time services over IP (RTIP) have also been increasingly significant due to the convergence of network services, and the real-time needs of the Internet of Things (IoT) will strengthen this trend. Such Real-Time applications have strict Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, posing a major challenge for IP networks. The Cognitive Packet Network (CPN) has been designed as a QoS-driven protocol that addresses user-oriented QoS demands by adaptively routing packets based on online sensing and measurement. Thus in this thesis we first describe our design for a novel ``Real-Time (RT) traffic over CPN'' protocol which uses QoS goals that match the needs of voice packet delivery in the presence of other background traffic under varied traffic conditions; we present its experimental evaluation via measurements of key QoS metrics such as packet delay, delay variation (jitter) and packet loss ratio. Pursuing our investigation of packet routing in the Internet, we then propose a novel Big Data and Machine Learning approach for real-time Internet scale Route Optimisation based on Quality-of-Service using an overlay network, and evaluate is performance. Based on the collection of data sampled each minutes over a large number of source-destinations pairs, we observe that intercontinental Internet Protocol (IP) paths are far from optimal with respect to metrics such as end-to-end round-trip delay. On the other hand, our machine learning based overlay network routing scheme exploits large scale data collected from communicating node pairs to select overlay paths, while it uses IP between neighbouring overlay nodes. We report measurements over a week long experiment with several million data points shows substantially better end-to-end QoS than is observed with pure IP routing. Pursuing the machine learning approach, we then address the challenging problem of dispatching incoming tasks to servers in Cloud systems so as to offer the best QoS and reliable job execution; an experimental system (the Task Allocation Platform) that we have developed is presented and used to compare several task allocation schemes, including a model driven algorithm, a reinforcement learning based scheme, and a ``sensibleââ allocation algorithm that assigns tasks to sub-systems that are observed to provide lower response time. These schemes are compared via measurements both among themselves and against a standard round-robin scheduler, with two architectures (with homogenous and heterogenous hosts having different processing capacities) and the conditions under which the different schemes offer better QoS are discussed. Since Cloud systems include both locally based servers at user premises and remote servers and multiple Clouds that can be reached over the Internet, we also describe a smart distributed system that combines local and remote Cloud facilities, allocating tasks dynamically to the service that offers the best overall QoS, and it includes a routing overlay which minimizes network delay for data transfer between Clouds. Applications of satellite technology to broadband ISDN networks
Two satellite architectures for delivering broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) service are evaluated. The first is assumed integral to an existing terrestrial network, and provides complementary services such as interconnects to remote nodes as well as high-rate multicast and broadcast service. The interconnects are at a 155 Mbs rate and are shown as being met with a nonregenerative multibeam satellite having 10-1.5 degree spots. The second satellite architecture focuses on providing private B-ISDN networks as well as acting as a gateway to the public network. This is conceived as being provided by a regenerative multibeam satellite with on-board ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) processing payload. With up to 800 Mbs offered, higher satellite EIRP is required. This is accomplished with 12-0.4 degree hopping beams, covering a total of 110 dwell positions. It is estimated the space segment capital cost for architecture one would be about 250M. The net user cost is given for a variety of scenarios, but the cost for 155 Mbs services is shown to be about $15-22/minute for 25 percent system utilization

Interoperability of wireless communication technologies in hybrid networks: Evaluation of end-to-end interoperability issues and quality of service requirements
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Hybrid Networks employing wireless communication technologies have nowadays brought closer the vision of communication âanywhere, any time with anyoneâ. Such communication technologies consist of various standards, protocols, architectures, characteristics, models, devices, modulation and coding techniques. All these different technologies naturally may share some common characteristics, but there are also many important differences. New advances in these technologies are emerging very rapidly, with the advent of new models, characteristics, protocols and architectures. This rapid evolution imposes many challenges and issues to be addressed, and of particular importance are the interoperability issues of the following wireless technologies: Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) IEEE802.11, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) IEEE 802.16, Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC), Digital Video Broadcasting of Satellite (DVB-S/DVB-S2), and Digital Video Broadcasting Return Channel through Satellite (DVB-RCS). Due to the differences amongst wireless technologies, these technologies do not generally interoperate easily with each other because of various interoperability and Quality of Service (QoS) issues.
The aim of this study is to assess and investigate end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements, such as bandwidth, delays, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput, TCP performance, UDP performance, unicast and multicast services and availability, on hybrid wireless communication networks (employing both satellite broadband and terrestrial wireless technologies).
The thesis provides an introduction to wireless communication technologies followed by a review of previous research studies on Hybrid Networks (both satellite and terrestrial wireless technologies, particularly Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, and SCPC). Previous studies have discussed Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC and 3G technologies and their standards as well as their properties and characteristics, such as operating frequency, bandwidth, data rate, basic configuration, coverage, power, interference, social issues, security problems, physical and MAC layer design and development issues. Although some previous studies provide valuable contributions to this area of research, they are limited to link layer characteristics, TCP performance, delay, bandwidth, capacity, data rate, and throughput. None of the studies cover all aspects of end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements; such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, link performance, TCP and UDP performance, unicast and multicast performance, at end-to-end level, on Hybrid wireless networks.
Interoperability issues are discussed in detail and a comparison of the different technologies and protocols was done using appropriate testing tools, assessing various performance measures including: bandwidth, delay, jitter, latency, packet loss, throughput and availability testing. The standards, protocol suite/ models and architectures for Wi-Fi, WiMAX, DVB-RCS, SCPC, alongside with different platforms and applications, are discussed and compared. Using a robust approach, which includes a new testing methodology and a generic test plan, the testing was conducted using various realistic test scenarios on real networks, comprising variable numbers and types of nodes. The data, traces, packets, and files were captured from various live scenarios and sites. The test results were analysed in order to measure and compare the characteristics of wireless technologies, devices, protocols and applications.
The motivation of this research is to study all the end-to-end interoperability issues and Quality of Service requirements for rapidly growing Hybrid Networks in a comprehensive and systematic way.
The significance of this research is that it is based on a comprehensive and systematic investigation of issues and facts, instead of hypothetical ideas/scenarios or simulations, which informed the design of a test methodology for empirical data gathering by real network testing, suitable for the measurement of hybrid network single-link or end-to-end issues using proven test tools.
This systematic investigation of the issues encompasses an extensive series of tests measuring delay, jitter, packet loss, bandwidth, throughput, availability, performance of audio and video session, multicast and unicast performance, and stress testing. This testing covers most common test scenarios in hybrid networks and gives recommendations in achieving good end-to-end interoperability and QoS in hybrid networks.
Contributions of study include the identification of gaps in the research, a description of interoperability issues, a comparison of most common test tools, the development of a generic test plan, a new testing process and methodology, analysis and network design recommendations for end-to-end interoperability issues and QoS requirements. This covers the complete cycle of this research.
It is found that UDP is more suitable for hybrid wireless network as compared to TCP, particularly for the demanding applications considered, since TCP presents significant problems for multimedia and live traffic which requires strict QoS requirements on delay, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth. The main bottleneck for satellite communication is the delay of approximately 600 to 680 ms due to the long distance factor (and the finite speed of light) when communicating over geostationary satellites.

This book provides an approachable overview of the most recent advances in the fascinating field of media synchronization (mediasync), gathering contributions from the most representative and influential experts. A user perspective of quality of service in m-commerce

In this paper, developments in the area of QoS-dependent multimedia perceptual quality are reviewed and are integrated with recent work focusing on QoS for e-commerce. Based on previously identified user perceptual tolerance to varying multimedia QoS, we show that enhancing the m-commerce B2C user experience with multimedia, far from being an idealised scenario, is in fact feasible if perceptual considerations are employed
A Survey of IP Address for Next Generation Internet Services
This paper surveys the problem of the astronomical growing demand of Internet Systems participating in the public network which has led to the depletion of allocated Internet Protocol version 4.0 (IPV4) addresses. Already, four out of the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) namely: ARNIC, RIPE, LACNIC and ARPIN have exhausted their allocated IPV4 addresses while the fifth AFRICNIC (Africaâs RIR) is reportedly depleted. We also examine the limitations of IPV4, the features of IPV6 and different modes of operating IPV6 standard. Findings shows that the current population of the world is over 6billion people with a projection of 9billion people by the year 2050 and IPV6 can conveniently accommodate 2128 devices. This paper also proposes the migration from the present Internet Protocol version 4.0(IPV4) to a new Internet Protocol version 6.0(IPV6) addresses. This research work has shown that deploying the IPV6 could only be the possible solution to sustaining Internet Services globally. A system for improving the quality of real-time services on the internet
Real-time Internet services are becoming more popular every day, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is arguably the most popular of these, despite the quality and reliability problems that are so characteristic of VOIP. This thesis proposes to apply a routing technique called Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing to VOIP and shows how this mitigates these problems to deliver a premium service that is more equal to traditional telephony than VOIP is currently.Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing uses the path diversity readily available in the Internet to route complete copies of the data to be communicated over multiple paths. This allows the effect of a failure on a path to be reduced, and possibly even masked completely, by the other paths. Significantly, rather than expecting changes of the Internet that will improve real-time service quality, this approach simply changes the manner in which real-time services use the Internet, leaving the Internet itself to stay the way it is.First, real VOIP traffic in a commercial call centre is measured (1) to establish a baseline of current quality characteristics against which the effects of Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing may be measured, and (2) as a source of realistic path characteristics. Simulations of various Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing systems that adopt the measured VOIP traffic characteristics then (1) show how this routing technique mitigates quality and reliability problems, and (2) quantify the quality deliverable with the VOIP traffic characteristics measured. For example, quantifying quality as a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) estimated from the measurements with the International Telecommunication Unionâs E-model, slightly more than 1 in every 23 of the VOIP telephone calls measured in the call centre is likely to be perceived to be of a quality with which humans would be less than very satisfied. Simulations carried out for this thesis show that using just two paths adopting the same measurements, Fully Redundant Dispersity Routing may increase quality to reduce that proportion to slightly less than 1 in every 10 000 VOIP telephone calls
