    A general coupling matrix synthesis method for all-resonator diplexers and multiplexers

    Coupling matrix (CM) synthesis methods for all-resonator diplexers and multiplexers are far from mature. For complex coupling topologies, the existing methods are often not able to find the appropriate CMs that satisfy the S-parameter specifications. To address this challenge, a new synthesis method, which hybridizes analytical and optimization techniques, called general all-resonator diplexer/multiplexer CM synthesis (GACMS) method, is proposed in this article. The two main innovations of GACMS are: 1) an optimization framework incorporating filter design knowledge, which effectively reduces the search space for CM synthesis and 2) a new memetic algorithm-based optimizer, which tackles the challenges from the complex landscape (function characteristics) of CM synthesis problems. GACMS is tested by six complex practical problems and CMs are successfully obtained for all of them. Comparisons with the existing methods demonstrate the advantages of GACMS in terms of solution quality and robustness

    Geometry of Radial Basis Neural Networks for Safety Biased Approximation of Unsafe Regions

    Barrier function-based inequality constraints are a means to enforce safety specifications for control systems. When used in conjunction with a convex optimization program, they provide a computationally efficient method to enforce safety for the general class of control-affine systems. One of the main assumptions when taking this approach is the a priori knowledge of the barrier function itself, i.e., knowledge of the safe set. In the context of navigation through unknown environments where the locally safe set evolves with time, such knowledge does not exist. This manuscript focuses on the synthesis of a zeroing barrier function characterizing the safe set based on safe and unsafe sample measurements, e.g., from perception data in navigation applications. Prior work formulated a supervised machine learning algorithm whose solution guaranteed the construction of a zeroing barrier function with specific level-set properties. However, it did not explore the geometry of the neural network design used for the synthesis process. This manuscript describes the specific geometry of the neural network used for zeroing barrier function synthesis, and shows how the network provides the necessary representation for splitting the state space into safe and unsafe regions.Comment: Accepted into American Control Conference (ACC) 202

    A Reuse-based framework for the design of analog and mixed-signal ICs

    Despite the spectacular breakthroughs of the semiconductor industry, the ability to design integrated circuits (ICs) under stringent time-to-market (TTM) requirements is lagging behind integration capacity, so far keeping pace with still valid Moore's Law. The resulting gap is threatening with slowing down such a phenomenal growth. The design community believes that it is only by means of powerful CAD tools and design methodologies -and, possibly, a design paradigm shift-that this design gap can be bridged. In this sense, reuse-based design is seen as a promising solution, and concepts such as IP Block, Virtual Component, and Design Reuse have become commonplace thanks to the significant advances in the digital arena. Unfortunately, the very nature of analog and mixed-signal (AMS) design has hindered a similar level of consensus and development. This paper presents a framework for the reuse-based design of AMS circuits. The framework is founded on three key elements: (1) a CAD-supported hierarchical design flow that facilitates the incorporation of AMS reusable blocks, reduces the overall design time, and expedites the management of increasing AMS design complexity; (2) a complete, clear definition of the AMS reusable block, structured into three separate facets or views: the behavioral, structural, and layout facets, the two first for top-down electrical synthesis and bottom-up verification, the latter used during bottom-up physical synthesis; (3) the design for reusability set of tools, methods, and guidelines that, relying on intensive parameterization as well as on design knowledge capture and encapsulation, allows to produce fully reusable AMS blocks.     On the suitability and development of layout templates for analog layout reuse and layout-aware synthesis

    Accelerating the synthesis of increasingly complex analog integrated circuits is key to bridge the widening gap between what we can integrate and what we can design while meeting ever-tightening time-to-market constraints. It is a well-known fact in the semiconductor industry that such goal can only be attained by means of adequate CAD methodologies, techniques, and accompanying tools. This is particularly important in analog physical synthesis (a.k.a. layout generation), where large sensitivities of the circuit performances to the many subtle details of layout implementation (device matching, loading and coupling effects, reliability, and area features are of utmost importance to analog designers), render complete automation a truly challenging task. To approach the problem, two directions have been traditionally considered, knowledge-based and optimization-based, both with their own pros and cons. Besides, recently reported solutions oriented to speed up the overall design flow by means of reuse-based practices or by cutting off time-consuming, error-prone spins between electrical and layout synthesis (a technique known as layout-aware synthesis), rely on a outstandingly rapid yet efficient layout generation method. This paper analyses the suitability of procedural layout generation based on templates (a knowledge-based approach) by examining the requirements that both layout reuse and layout-aware solutions impose, and how layout templates face them. The ability to capture the know-how of experienced layout designers and the turnaround times for layout instancing are considered main comparative aspects in relation to other layout generation approaches. A discussion on the benefit-cost trade-off of using layout templates is also included. In addition to this analysis, the paper delves deeper into systematic techniques to develop fully reusable layout templates for analog circuits, either for a change of the circuit sizing (i.e., layout retargeting) or a change of the fabrication process (i.e., layout migration).     Reasoning about Knowledge and Strategies under Hierarchical Information

    Two distinct semantics have been considered for knowledge in the context of strategic reasoning, depending on whether players know each other's strategy or not. The problem of distributed synthesis for epistemic temporal specifications is known to be undecidable for the latter semantics, already on systems with hierarchical information. However, for the other, uninformed semantics, the problem is decidable on such systems. In this work we generalise this result by introducing an epistemic extension of Strategy Logic with imperfect information. The semantics of knowledge operators is uninformed, and captures agents that can change observation power when they change strategies. We solve the model-checking problem on a class of "hierarchical instances", which provides a solution to a vast class of strategic problems with epistemic temporal specifications on hierarchical systems, such as distributed synthesis or rational synthesis

    Barrier-Based Test Synthesis for Safety-Critical Systems Subject to Timed Reach-Avoid Specifications

    We propose an adversarial, time-varying test-synthesis procedure for safety-critical systems without requiring specific knowledge of the underlying controller steering the system. From a broader test and evaluation context, determination of difficult tests of system behavior is important as these tests would elucidate problematic system phenomena before these mistakes can engender problematic outcomes, e.g. loss of human life in autonomous cars, costly failures for airplane systems, etc. Our approach builds on existing, simulation-based work in the test and evaluation literature by offering a controller-agnostic test-synthesis procedure that provides a series of benchmark tests with which to determine controller reliability. To achieve this, our approach codifies the system objective as a timed reach-avoid specification. Then, by coupling control barrier functions with this class of specifications, we construct an instantaneous difficulty metric whose minimizer corresponds to the most difficult test at that system state. We use this instantaneous difficulty metric in a game-theoretic fashion, to produce an adversarial, time-varying test-synthesis procedure that does not require specific knowledge of the system's controller, but can still provably identify realizable and maximally difficult tests of system behavior. Finally, we develop this test-synthesis procedure for both continuous and discrete-time systems and showcase our test-synthesis procedure on simulated and hardware examples
