Pedagogical work requires the willingness to engage with new situations and with people in their diversity. This book does not offer any simple recipes, but a gentle approach to important steps towards professionalisation in the teaching profession. These lead via an open attitude of perception and the inclusion of corporeality to an insight into how learning and teaching processes can be understood in a new or different way. With vignettes and examples from different pedagogical fields, the theoretical concepts are presented and reflected on their application.

FPGA Spiking Neural Processors With Supervised and Unsupervised Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity
Energy efficient architectures for brain inspired computing have been an active area of research
with recent advances in the field of neuroscience. Spiking neural networks (SNN) are a class of
artificial neural networks in which information is encoded in discrete spike events, closely resembling
the biological brain. Liquid State Machine (LSM) is a computational model developed in
theoretical neuroscience to describe information processing in recurrent neural circuits and can be
used to model recurrent SNNs. LSM is composed of an input, reservoir and output layers. A major
challenge in SNNs is training the network with discrete spiking events for which traditional loss
functions and optimization techniques cannot be applied directly. Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity
(STDP) is an unsupervised learning algorithm which updates synaptic weights based on time
difference between spikes of pre synaptic and post synaptic neurons. STDP is a localized learning
algorithm and induces self-organizing behaviors resulting in sparse network structures making it
a suitable choice for low cost hardware implementation. SNNs are hardware friendly as presence
or absence of a spike can be encoded using a binary digit. In this research, SNN processor with
energy efficient architecture is developed and is implemented on Xilinx Zynq ZC706 FPGA platform.
Hardware friendly learning rules based on STDP are proposed and reservoir and readout
layers are trained with these learning algorithms. In order to achieve energy efficiency, sparsification
algorithm utilizing STDP rule is proposed and implemented. On chip training and inference
are carried out and it is shown that with the proposed unsupervised STDP for reservoir training
and supervised STDP for readout training, classification performance of 95% is achieved for TI
corpus speech data set. Classification performance, hardware overhead and power consumption of
the processor with different learning schemes are reported

Out of equilibrium Statistical Physics of learning
In the study of hard optimization problems, it is often unfeasible to achieve
a full analytic control on the dynamics of the algorithmic processes that
find solutions efficiently. In many cases, a static approach is able to provide
considerable insight into the dynamical properties of these algorithms: in fact,
the geometrical structures found in the energetic landscape can strongly affect
the stationary states and the optimal configurations reached by the solvers.
In this context, a classical Statistical Mechanics approach, relying on the
assumption of the asymptotic realization of a Boltzmann Gibbs equilibrium,
can yield misleading predictions when the studied algorithms comprise some
stochastic components that effectively drive these processes out of equilibrium.
Thus, it becomes necessary to develop some intuition on the relevant features
of the studied phenomena and to build an ad hoc Large Deviation analysis,
providing a more targeted and richer description of the geometrical properties
of the landscape. The present thesis focuses on the study of learning processes
in Artificial Neural Networks, with the aim of introducing an out of equilibrium
statistical physics framework, based on the introduction of a local entropy
potential, for supporting and inspiring algorithmic improvements in the field
of Deep Learning, and for developing models of neural computation that can
carry both biological and engineering interest
