Emoción y cognición. James, más de cien años después

In this paper we present a brief exposition of the main theories regarding emotions -their nature and role in human behaviour- which have appeared since the beginning of the century. We suggest that our knowledge of the emotions has progressed little because of deep epistemological mistakes, such as the central role attributed to cognition in the explanation of phenomena. Cognitive theories stem from the concept of intentionality proposed by philosophers such as Brentano, Stumpf and Husserl, which cannot be applied to all expressions of emotion. Finally, we suggest some solutionsfrom un unti-Cartesian perspective, against the dualism of mind and body, inspired by the works of Vygotsky and Wittgenstein.

Compact radio emission in Ultraluminous X-ray sources

We present results from our studies of radio emission from selected Ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources, using archival Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) data and new European VLBI Network (EVN) observations. The GMRT data are used to find possible faint radio emission from ULX sources located in late-type galaxies in the Chandra Deep Fields. No detections are found at 235, 325 and 610 MHz, and upper limits on the radio flux densities at these frequencies are given. The EVN observations target milliarcsecond-scale structures in three ULXs with known radio counterparts (N4449- X1, N4088-X1, and N4861-X2). We confirm an earlier identification of the ULX N4449-X1 with a supernova remnant and obtain the most accurate estimates of its size and age. We detect compact radio emission for the ULX N4088-X1, which could harbour an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) of 10^5 M\odot accreting at a sub-Eddington rate. We detect a compact radio component in the ULX N4861-X2, with a brightness temperature > 10^6 K and an indication for possible extended emission. If the extended structure is confirmed, this ULX could be an HII region with a diameter of 8.6 pc and surface brightness temperature \geq 10^5 K. The compact radio emission may be coming from a ~ 10^5 M\odot black hole accreting at 0.1M_Edd.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astronomische Nachrichte

This article shows an analysis of the verbal-unit “dar” from a lexematic-syntactic perspective, because it allows to observe the correference between the characteristics semantics and the syntactics ones. In this analysis we have verified that the idealizaed production does not always coincide with the actual behaviour of Seville speech and of the journalistic texts. Most of times, the meaning of the verb depends on syntactic environment and semantic value of the nominal group that is built with

"Set in Poland, that is to say Nowhere": Alfred Jarry and the Politics of Topological Space

This article is intended to shed light on philosophical considerations on the ontology of space (situation) as put forward in the prose and dramatic writings of French iconoclast Alfred Jarry, by posing that Jarry's notion of space is dynamic in a twofold sense. Firstly, Jarry's sense of space is consistently described in terms of a sense of temporality (duration), which is why Jarry's sense of space is distinctly higher-dimensional (space- time). Secondly, I argue that Jarry's reaction against conventional modalities of scientific and artistic thinking take the form of a subversive turn (which Deleuze calls the Great Turning), via the pseudoscience of pataphysics, which is directed not only against metaphysics, but also a geometric understanding of the physical and metaphysical worlds. I argue that Jarry's conception of a spatio-temporal ontology is distinctly non-geometric, or topological in nature. Topological imagery allows Jarry to present a more vital and fleshed out sense of living space-time, within which a new politics of space and time is activated by the forces of endless change and continuous deformation. I argue that through the topological corporeality of Ubu, Jarry promotes a sense of ABSTRACT theatre within which the dynamic properties of topological space become actualised in the way of a politics of the unimaginable, an Ubuesque realm where, through the power of technology and the imagination, the exceptional and unrealisable rule

A search for radio counterparts to Chandra ULX candidates

We present a systematic search for radio counterparts to Ultra Luminous X-ray (ULX) source candidates based on a cross-correlation of the Swartz et al. (2004) ULX catalogue based on Chandra data and the FIRST radio survey. We find seven cases of conspiscuous peaks of radio emission that could be associated to ULX sources. Among these seven ULX radio candidates, three X-ray sources are located within 5" of the FIRST radio peaks. These three cases are shown and discussed individually.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Real-time evolution of a large-scale relativistic jet

Context. Astrophysical jets are ubiquitous in the Universe on all scales, but their large-scale dynamics and evolution in time are hard to observe since they usually develop at a very slow pace. Aims. We aim to obtain the first observational proof of the expected large-scale evolution and interaction with the environment in an astrophysical jet. Only jets from microquasars offer a chance to witness the real-time, full-jet evolution within a human lifetime, since they combine a 'short', few parsec length with relativistic velocities. Methods. The methodology of this work is based on a systematic recalibraton of interferometric radio observations of microquasars available in public archives. In particular, radio observations of the microquasar GRS 1758-258 over less than two decades have provided the most striking results. Results. Significant morphological variations in the extended jet structure of GRS 1758-258 are reported here that were previously missed. Its northern radio lobe underwent a major morphological variation that rendered the hotspot undetectable in 2001 and reappeared again in the following years. The reported changes confirm the Galactic nature of the source. We tentatively interpret them in terms of the growth of instabilities in the jet flow. There is also evidence of surrounding cocoon. These results can provide a testbed for models accounting for the evolution of jets and their interaction with the environment.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. The resolved structure of the extragalactic supernova remnant SNR 4449-1

We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the milliarcsecond-scale radio structure of the supernova remnant SNR 4449-1 in the galaxy NGC 4449. This young and superluminous remnant was observed at 1.6 GHz (λ=18\lambda = 18\,cm) with the European VLBI Network. The observations confirm earlier identifications of this object with a supernova remnant (SNR) while revealing a somewhat different morphology compared with the structure reported by Bietenholz et al. from VLBI observations at 1.4 GHz. This difference is discussed here in the context of structural sensitivity of both observations. The 1.6 GHz image yields accurate estimates of the size (0.0422 arcsec ×\times 0.0285 arcsec and 0.8 ×\times 0.5 pc) and age (\sim55 yr) of SNR 4449-1. With a total flux of 6.1 ±\pm 0.6 mJy measured in the VLBI image, the historical lightcurve of the source can be well represented by a power-law decay with a power index of -1.19 ±\pm 0.07. The SNR exhibits a decline rate of the radio emission of 2.2% ±\pm 0.1% yr1^{-1} and a radio luminosity of 1.74 ×\times 1035^{35} erg s1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS preprint, arXiv:1309.401
