    Ultra low range sidelobe level pulse compression waveform design for spaceborne meteorological radars.

    Meteorological measurements from spaceborne radars present several advantages over current passive techniques, due to the radar capability to discriminate backscattered energy in range. However, the system configuration imposes stringent design requirements in order to guarantee cloud and rain detectability, in particular on the radar waveform. Since power is severely restricted on board a satellite, it is necessary to achieve an efficient range resolution with low transmitted power requirements. Pulse compression theory solves the previous conflicting demand, but the transmitted signal needs to be carefully designed in order to allow the significantly large dynamic range (between 60 and 80 dB depending on the type of meteorological target) needed to carry out the measurements. Several pulse compression range sidelobe reduction techniques of differing natures have been investigated and reported in the literature during the past 50 years. A detailed survey of the most relevant range sidelobe supression procedures has been carried out in order to identify the most suitable frequency modulation candidates which are potentially capable of meeting the stringent specifications of spaceborne radar meteorology. Novel pulse compression waveform design techniques have also been developed, employing linear FM predistortion functions and asymmetric frequency modulation laws, which provide excellent performance in terms of range sidelobe level (below -60 dB) and Doppler tolerance. Different options for the provision of a rain mode for the RA-2 Radar Altimeter (due to fly on European Space Agency ENVISAT satellite) are described, based on altimetry linear FM full-deramp technique concepts. Finally, amplitude modulated pulse compression waveform design alternatives are analysed for the MACSIM radar (Millimetre wave Active Cloud Structure Imaging Mission, European Space Agency Pre Phase A Study), which allow to measure different type of clouds within the Mission required radiometric resolution accuracy

    Limitation on the use of a spaceborne SAR for rain measurements

    A proof-of-concept experiment for remote sensing of precipitation by SAR is part of the SIR-C/X-SAR experiment. This thesis presents a feasibility study and recommendations for detection of precipitation using SIR-C/X-SAR. The principal limitation to rain measurement from a spaceborne SAR is the poor SCR (signal-to-clutter ratio). This is in part due to the system configuration and largely due to the large magnitude of echoes associated with the surface component. Two geometries apply: off-vertical and vertical pointing angles. Here we present calculations for both. With vertical geometry a large clutter component is associated with range sidelobes of the chirped transmitter pulse. To overcome this problem a narrow transmitted pulse (3 mu sec) processed without dechirping was used. Since the magnitude of the clutter over the ocean is high it is recommended that data in the chirped mode be obtained over the forest due to the significantly lower backscatter associated with it at nadir. With these recommendations, at nadir, it is believed that rain rates greater than 5 mm/hr may be detected. The use of a better weighting function that gives lower sidelobe levels than that used (a raised cos(exp 2)) is also recommended. At off-vertical look angles all the range cells have a large clutter component associated with them due to the geometry. The use of higher angles of incidence (theta greater than 60 deg) is recommended because of better SCR at these angles. With this recommendation, at off-vertical, it is believed that rain rates greater than 10 mm/hr may be detected. Various other techniques are described and recommended to improve the minimum detectable precipitation rate. These include trying to subtract the estimate of the clutter from the combined signal and clutter and trying to separate the Doppler of the rain echo and the surface echo. With these recommendations it is believed that it is possible to detect precipitation as low as 1 mm/hr at vertical and greater than 5 mm/hr at off-vertical look angles

    End to end simulator for the WIVERN W-band Doppler conically scanning spaceborne radar

    The WIVERN (WInd VElocity Radar Nephoscope) mission, soon entering in Phase-0 of the ESA Earth Explorer program, promises to complement Doppler wind lidar by globally observing, for the first time, vertical profiles of winds in cloudy areas. This work describes an end to end simulator of the WIVERN conically scanning 94 GHz Doppler radar, the only payload of the mission. Specific features of the simulator are: the conically scanning geometry; the inclusion of cross-polarization effects and of the simulation of a radiometric mode; the applicability to global cloud model outputs via an orbital model; the incorporation of a mispointing model accounting for thermo-elastic distortions, microvibrations, startrackers uncertainties, etc.; the inclusion of the surface clutter. Some of the simulator capabilities are showcased for a case study involving a full rotational scan of the instrument. The simulator represents a very useful tool for studying the performances of the WIVERN concept and possible trade-offs for the different configurations (e.g. different antenna sizes, pulse lengths, antenna patterns, . . . ).     Efficient SAR MTI simulator of marine scenes

    Tècniques de detecció de moviment amb radars d'apertura sintètica multicanals sobre escenaris marítims.[ANGLÈS] Multichannel spaceborne and airborne synthetic aperture radars (SAR) offer the opportunity to monitor maritime traffic through specially designed instruments and applying a suitable signal processing in order to reject sea surface clutter. These processing techniques are known as Moving Target Indication techniques (MTI) and the choice of the most adequate method depends on the radar system and operating environment. In maritime scenes the seas presents a complicated clutter whose temporal/spatial coherence models and background reflectivity depends on a large number of factors and are still subject of research. Moreover the targets kinematics are influenced by the sea conditions, producing in some situations high alterations in the imaged target. These aspects make difficult the detectability analysis of vessels in maritime scenarios, requiring both theoretical models and numerical simulations. This thesis looks into the few available MTI techniques and deals experimentally with them in a developed simulator for maritime SAR images. The results are also presented in a image format, giving the sequence for one trial simulation and the asymptotic probability of detection for the simulated conditions.[CASTELLÀ] Los radares de apertura sintética (SAR) multicanal a bordo de satélites o plataformas aerotransportadas ofrecen la oportunidad de monitorizar el tráfico marítimo a través de instrumentos especialmente diseñados y procesando los datos recibidos de forma adecuada para rechazar la señal provocada por la reflexión del mar. A estas técnicas se las conoce como Moving Target Indication techniques (MTI) y la elección de la más adecuada depende del sistema y del entorno de aplicación. En escenarios marinos, el mar presenta un clutter complicado de modelar, cuya coherencia espacio-temporal y reflectividad radar dependen de un gran número de factores que hoy en día todavía siguen siendo investigados. Por otra parte los parámetros dinámicos del target estan influenciados por las condiciones del mar, produciendo en algunas situaciones graves alteraciones en la formación de la imagen. Estos aspectos dificultan el análisis de la detección de las embarcaciones, requiriendo modelos teóricos y simulaciones numéricas. Este Proyecto Final de Carrera investiga las técnicas MTI disponibles, aplicándolas sobre las imágenes marítimas generadas por un simulador SAR.     Generation of a combined dataset of simulated radar and electro-optical imagery

    In the world of remote sensing there exist radar sensors and EO/IR sensors, both of which carry with them unique information useful to the imaging community. Radar has the capability of imaging through all types of weather, day or night. EO/IR produces radiance maps and frequently images at much finer resolution than radar. While each of these systems is valuable to imaging, there exists unknown territory in the imaging community as to the value added in combining the best of both these worlds. This work will begin to explore the challenges in simulating a scene in both a radar tool called Xpatch and an EO/IR tool called DIRSIG. The capabilities and limitations inherent to both radar and EO/IR are similar in the image simulation tools, so the work done in a simulated environment will carry over to the real-world environment as well. The synthetic data generated will be compared to existing measured data to demonstrate the validity of the experiment. Future work should explore registration and various types of fusion of the resulting images to demonstrate the synergistic value of the combined images

    Verification of the virtual bandwidth SAR (VB-SAR) scheme for centimetric resolution subsurface imaging from space

    This work presents the first experimental demonstration of the virtual bandwidth synthetic aperture radar (VB-SAR) imaging scheme. VB-SAR is a newly-developed subsurface imaging technique which, in stark contrast to traditional close-proximity ground penetrating radar (GPR) schemes, promises imaging from remote standoff platforms such as aircraft and satellites. It specifically exploits the differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) phase history of a radar wave within a drying soil volume to generate high- resolution vertical maps of the scattering through the soil volume. For this study, a stack of C-band VV polarisation DInSAR images of a sandy soil containing a buried target was collected in the laboratory whilst the soil moisture was varied - firstly during controlled water addition, and then during subsequent drying. The wetting image set established the moisture-phase relationship for the soil, which was then applied to the drying DInSAR image set using the VB-SAR scheme. This allowed retrieval of high resolution VB-SAR imagery with a vertical discrimination of 0.04m from a stack of 1m vertical resolution DInSAR images. This work unequivocally shows that the basic principles of the VB-SAR technique are valid and opens the door to further investigation of this promising technique

    Temporal Characteristics of Boreal Forest Radar Measurements

    Radar observations of forests are sensitive to seasonal changes, meteorological variables and variations in soil and tree water content. These phenomena cause temporal variations in radar measurements, limiting the accuracy of tree height and biomass estimates using radar data. The temporal characteristics of radar measurements of forests, especially boreal forests, are not well understood. To fill this knowledge gap, a tower-based radar experiment was established for studying temporal variations in radar measurements of a boreal forest site in southern Sweden. The work in this thesis involves the design and implementation of the experiment and the analysis of data acquired. The instrument allowed radar signatures from the forest to be monitored over timescales ranging from less than a second to years. A purpose-built, 50 m high tower was equipped with 30 antennas for tomographic imaging at microwave frequencies of P-band (420-450 MHz), L-band (1240-1375 MHz) and C-band (5250-5570 MHz) for multiple polarisation combinations. Parallel measurements using a 20-port vector network analyser resulted in significantly shorter measurement times and better tomographic image quality than previous tower-based radars. A new method was developed for suppressing mutual antenna coupling without affecting the range resolution. Algorithms were developed for compensating for phase errors using an array radar and for correcting for pixel-variant impulse responses in tomographic images. Time series results showed large freeze/thaw backscatter variations due to freezing moisture in trees. P-band canopy backscatter variations of up to 10 dB occurred near instantaneously as the air temperature crossed 0⁰C, with ground backscatter responding over longer timescales. During nonfrozen conditions, the canopy backscatter was very stable with time. Evidence of backscatter variations due to tree water content were observed during hot summer periods only. A high vapour pressure deficit and strong winds increased the rate of transpiration fast enough to reduce the tree water content, which was visible as 0.5-2 dB backscatter drops during the day. Ground backscatter for cross-polarised observations increased during strong winds due to bending tree stems. Significant temporal decorrelation was only seen at P-band during freezing, thawing and strong winds. Suitable conditions for repeat-pass L-band interferometry were only seen during the summer. C-band temporal coherence was high over timescales of seconds and occasionally for several hours for night-time observations during the summer. Decorrelation coinciding with high transpiration rates was observed at L- and C-band, suggesting sensitivity to tree water dynamics.The observations from this experiment are important for understanding, modelling and mitigating temporal variations in radar observables in forest parameter estimation algorithms. The results also are also useful in the design of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar missions with interferometric and tomographic capabilities. The results motivate the implementation of single-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radars for forest applications at P-, L- and C-band

    WAVEFORM AND TRANSCEIVER OPTIMIZATION FOR MULTI-FUNCTIONAL AIRBORNE RADAR THROUGH ADAPTIVE PROCESSING

    Pulse compression techniques have been widely used for target detection and remote sensing. The primary concern for pulse compression is the sidelobe interference. Waveform design is an important method to improve the sidelobe performance. As a multi-functional aircraft platform in aviation safety domain, ADS-B system performs functions involving detection, localization and alerting of external traffic. In this work, a binary phase modulation is introduced to convert the original 1090 MHz ADS-B signal waveform into a radar signal. Both the statistical and deterministic models of new waveform are developed and analyzed. The waveform characterization, optimization and its application are studied in details. An alternative way to achieve low sidelobe levels without trading o range resolution and SNR is the adaptive pulse compression - RMMSE (Reiterative Minimum Mean-Square error). Theoretically, RMMSE is able to suppress the sidelobe level down to the receiver noise floor. However, the application of RMMSE to actual radars and the related implementation issues have not been investigated before. In this work, implementation aspects of RMMSE such as waveform sensitivity, noise immunity and computational complexity are addressed. Results generated by applying RMMSE to both simulated and measured radar data are presented and analyzed. Furthermore, a two-dimensional RMMSE algorithm is derived to mitigate the sidelobe effects from both pulse compression processing and antenna radiation pattern. In addition, to achieve even better control of the sidelobe level, a joint transmit and receive optimization scheme (JTRO) is proposed, which reduces the impacts of HPA nonlinearity and receiver distortion.
