    From MANET to people-centric networking: Milestones and open research challenges

    In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications

    A Novel Energy Harvesting Aware Routing Protocol for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks

    Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) have the potential to empower smart ocean applications. However, the widespread use of UWSN applications has been limited due to the many daunting challenges incurred in underwater wireless acoustic communication. Moreover, underwater wireless communication is energy-hungry, which confines UWSN deployment to small-scale due to the risks and costs of missions for at sea replacement of the nodes' batteries. The energy harvesting capability of underwater sensor nodes is an important characteristic that has been overlooked in the literature. In this thesis, we study the data routing process in UWSNs with energy harvesting capabilities. We proposed a novel opportunistic routing protocol, named RELOR, that is the first in the literature to consider the energy harvesting capability of underwater sensor nodes during routing decisions. RELOR implements a learning framework for the best selection of the forwarder nodes based on the observed environment conditions. We conduct extensive simulations to compare the performance of the proposed protocol to the state-of-the-art solution. Obtained results show that RELOR outperforms the related work in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end latency, and nodes’ energy consumption

    Acoustically driven control of mobile robots for source localization in complex ocean environments

    Ocean based robotic systems are an opportunity to combine the power of acoustic sensing in the water with sophisticated control schemes. Together these bodies of knowledge could create autonomous systems for mapping acoustic fields and localizing underwater sources. However, existing control schemes have often been designed for land and air robots. This creates challenges for applying these algorithms to complex ocean environments. Acoustic fields are strongly frequency dependent, can rarely be realistically modeled analytically, have complex contours where the feature of interest is not always located at the peak pressure, and include many sources of background noise. This work addresses these challenges for control schemes from three categories: feedback and observer control, gradient ascent control and optimal control. In each case the challenges of applying the control scheme to an acoustic field are enumerated and addressed to create a suite of acoustically driven control schemes. For many of these algorithms, the largest issue is the processing and collection of acoustic data, particularly in the face of noise. Two new methods are developed to solve this issue. The first is the use of Principal Component Analysis as a noise filter for acoustic signals, which is shown to address particularly high levels of noise, while providing the frequency dependent sound pressure levels necessary for subsequent processing. The second method addresses the challenge that an analytical expression of the pressure field is often lacking, due to uncertainties and complexities in the environmental parameters. Basis functions are used to address this. Several candidates are considered, but Legendre polynomials are selected for their low error and reasonable processing time. Additionally, a method of intermediate points is used to approximate high frequency pressure fields with low numbers of collected data points. Following this work, the individual control schemes are explored. A method of observer feedback control is proposed to localize sources by linearizing the acoustic fields. A gradient ascent method for localizing sources in real time is proposed which uses Matched Field Processing and Bayesian filters. These modifications allow the gradient ascent algorithm to be compatible with complex acoustic fields. Finally, an optimal control method is proposed using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle to derive trajectories in real time that balance information gain with control energy. This method is shown to efficiently map an acoustic field, either for optimal sensor placement or to localize sources. The contribution of this work is a new collection of control schemes that use acoustic data to localize acoustically complex sources in a realistic noisy environment, and an understanding of the tradeoffs inherent in applying each of these to the acoustic domain

    Blind localization of radio emitters in wireless communications

    The proliferation of wireless services is expected to increase the demand for radio spectrum in the foreseeable future. Given the limitations of the radio spectrum, it is evident that the current fixed frequency assignment policy fails to accommodate this increasing demand. Thus, the need for innovative technologies that can scale to accommodate future demands both in terms of spectrum efficiency and high reliable communication. Cognitive radio (CR) is one of the emerging technologies that offers a more flexible use of frequency bands allowing unlicensed users to exploit and use portions of the spectrum that are temporarily unused without causing any potential harmful interference to the incumbents. The most important functionality of a CR system is to observe the radio environment through various spectrum awareness techniques e.g., spectrum sensing or detection of spectral users in the spatio-temporal domain. In this research, we mainly focus on one of the key cognitive radio enabling techniques called localization, which provides crucial geo-location of the unknown radio transmitter in the surrounding environment. Knowledge of the user’s location can be very useful in enhancing the functionality of CRs and allows for better spectrum resource allocations in the spatial domain. For instance, the location-awareness feature can be harnessed to accomplish CR tasks such as spectrum sensing, dynamic channel allocation and interference management to enable cognitive radio operation and hence to maximize the spectral utilization. Additionally, geo-location can significantly expand the capabilities of many wireless communication applications ranging from physical layer security, geo-routing, energy efficiency, and a large set of emerging wireless sensor network and social networking applications. We devote the first part of this research to explore a broad range of existing cooperative localization techniques and through Monte-Carlo simulations analyze the performance of such techniques. We also propose two novel techniques that offer better localization performance with respect to the existing ones. The second and third parts of this research put forth a new analytical framework to characterize the performance of a particular low-complexity localization technique called weighted centroid localization (WCL), based on the statistical distribution of the ratio of two quadratic forms in normal variables. Specifically, we evaluate the performance of WCL in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE) and cumulative distribution function (CDF). The fourth part of this research focuses on studying the bias of the WCL and also provides solutions for bias correction. Throughout this research, we provide a case study analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed approaches under changing channel and environment conditions. For the new theoretical framework, we compare analytical and Monte-Carlo simulation results of the performance metric of interest. A key contribution in our analysis is that we present not only the accurate performance in terms of the RMSE and CDF, but a new analytical framework that takes into consideration the finite nature of the network, overcoming the limitations of asymptotic results based on the central limit theorem. Remarkably, the numerical results unfold that the new analytical framework is able to predict the performance of WCL capturing all the essential aspects of propagation as well as the cognitive radio network spatial topology. Finally, we present conclusions gained from this research and possible future directions
